Head coach Aaqib Javed promised that Pakistan could prepare a spin-friendly wicket anywhere in the country, and the first day of the second Test against West Indies in Multan demonstrated he had kept his promise.

Spin ran riot once more, as 20 wickets fell and both sides wrapped up within nine runs of each other. A hat-trick from Noman Ali, the first by a Pakistani spinner in Tests, saw Pakistan tear through the visitors in the morning session.

West Indies were reduced to 54 for 8 at one stage, before a remarkable recovery from the last three batters dragged them to the relative safety of 163.

It became clear that two of them could play the spin game when West Indies got the ball in hand.

Kemar Roach ripped through Pakistan’s top order, while Jomel Warrican and Gudakesh Motie split seven wickets between them. Only Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel offered resistance as Pakistan folded for 154.

West Indies got their wish in the morning when they won the toss, allowing them to bat first. But they took little time running into trouble when Mikyle Louis poked behind to Rizwan, and got Pakistan up and running in the second over.

Debutant Amir Jangoo was struck plumb in front by Sajid Khan five balls later, and Pakistan were on their way.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Kavem Hodge put together a brief partnership that saw off fast bowler Kashif Ali, and initially held off the spinners. But once that stand was punctured, bloodletting followed. West Indies lost five wickets in the next 13 balls that reduced them from 32 for 2 to 38 for 7.

Three balls at the start of the 12th over from Noman got him his hat-trick with a mixture of deliveries. Justin Greaves’ edge came as a result of a touch of extra bounce, while Tevin Imlach missed a sweep to a straight one.

With just about everyone crowding around the bat for the hat-trick ball, Noman pushed it in at pace and found a bit of turn off the pitch.

Member of Parliament (MP) Sanjeev Datadin delivered a passionate address in the National Assembly on Friday, countering opposition claims and lauding what he described as transformative developments under the PPP/C government.

He praised Budget 2025 as a “blueprint for sustainable growth” while critiquing the opposition’s record on healthcare, education, and economic policies.

MP Datadin disputed claims that dialysis treatment was free under the previous administration, describing such assertions as “economical with the truth.”

He explained that during the opposition’s tenure, dialysis patients received a one-time payment of $300,000. In contrast, the current government provides $600,000 annually to each patient, benefiting 550 individuals.

The MP also pointed to improvements in the health sector, including establishing the diagnostic labs and dialysis centres in Regions Two, Three, Six, and Ten, as well as in Georgetown and along the East Bank of Demerara.

He noted that future hospitals will be equipped with dialysis facilities, reaffirming the government’s commitment to accessible healthcare.

MP Datadin reminded the National Assembly that it was the previous government of that increased the University of Guyana tuition fees by 35 per cent and imposing administrative charges on students.

He commended the government’s initiatives to make university education free, write off existing student loans, and reverse the opposition’s policy of targeting loan defaulters through public notices.

“They [opposition] love young people and how much they prefer education yet when it came to the fees of the university. The coalition government, APNU/AFC, raised university fees by 35 per cent, that is a fact,” he asserted.

Beyond the strides made in education, MP Datadin credited the PPP/C government with introducing robust legislation, including the Local Content Act and the Petroleum Activities Act.

He noted that over 1,100 companies, of which 51 per cent are owned by Guyanese, have received local content certificates since the Act’s implementation, generating $620 million in revenue in 2024 alone.

“That is what keeping your promise looks like, that is what caring about the people of Guyana looks like. Don’t say you’re going to have a policy to benefit them and for which they would be able to develop their companies and earn revenue, and you don’t actually do it,” the MP emphasised.

The MP also praised the revamped Natural Resource Fund (NRF), which he said now operates transparently with clear rules on withdrawals, investments, and reporting.

Addressing criticisms of the gas-to-energy project, the MP said it would provide affordable energy, boosting industrial competitiveness dismissing the opposition’s call for additional feasibility studies, arguing that such delays stifle progress.

On the note of stifled progress, MP Datadin highlighted that under the leadership of the opposition, citizens faced 400 new taxes, including fees for owning pets and selling newspapers, all of which were reversed since the government took office.

In addition, he asserted since taking office, the government has already delivered on its pledge to create 50,000 jobs and is on track to allocate 50,000 house lots.

He also highlighted the reinstatement of cash grants for students and additional financial aid programmes further enhancing the lives of Guyanese in accordance with the PPP/C administration’s 2020 to 2025 mandate.

The Ministry of Health is pleased to announce that the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL) has officially received accreditation from the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) as a National Influenza Centre (NIC) and has become a member of the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS).

This prestigious accreditation marks a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s capacity to monitor, detect, and respond to influenza and other viral threats. As part of GISRS, the NPHRL will play an integral role in the global surveillance network that monitors the evolution of influenza viruses worldwide.

This ensures that public health responses are timely, evidence-based, and effective in mitigating the risks posed by these viruses.

The WHO GISRS continuously tracks influenza activity around the world, conducts risk assessments, and provides recommendations for appropriate public health responses. By joining this network, the NPHRL will contribute to a global effort aimed at improving preparedness, enhancing disease surveillance, and informing the development of vaccines and antiviral treatments.

This accreditation underscores the expertise and commitment of the NPHRL laboratory in safeguarding public health. Inclusion in GISRS will enable collaboration with international health authorities, ensuring that Guyana is better equipped to respond to emerging viral threats and contribute to global health security.

As part of its responsibilities, the NPHRL will support regional and international efforts to monitor influenza strains, share critical data, and ensure the country remains aligned with the best practices in viral surveillance and outbreak management.

The Ministry of Health reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the health and safety of the population through robust surveillance systems, advanced laboratory testing, and continued collaboration with global health organisations.

Between 2020 and 2023, Guyana’s exports increased by a massive 285 per cent, moving from US$2.8 billion to US$10.8 billion.

This was revealed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, who was defending the 2025 budget in the National Assembly on Friday.

This accounts for a 106 per cent improvement in our non-oil exports,” the minister said.

He emphasised that the government has consistently engaged in negotiations with trading partners to remove market access barriers and expand market presence for local products in regional and international markets.

As a result, Minister Todd explained that trade with the country’s major extra-regional partners increased significantly.

“Exports to the United States and Canada expanded by US$6.2 billion and US$385 billion respectively. The growth of our exports to the United Kingdom and the European Union have also been exponential, increasing by US$747 million and US$2.2 billion during that period,” he said.

Exports to non-traditional markets have also increased substantially with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Singapore and India being ranked among Guyana’s top ten export destinations. Since 2020, exports to these countries have grown by US$2.1 billion.

The minister further noted that this increase is a result of the government’s efforts to implement measures directed at the expansion of the economy and enhance both traditional and non-traditional export profiles.

Recognising President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s visionary leadership in positioning Guyana as a model in economic, social and environmental development, the foreign affairs minister also highlighted the vast achievements of the government in foreign policy.

The government continues to demonstrate its commitment to protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. It has been actively involved in the international arena, which includes its role in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

“Guyana’s international engagements are grounded in the provisions of our Constitution, respect for the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, and the fundamental adherence to international law,” he said.

Minister Todd also emphasised Guyana’s efforts to promote indigenous rights, address racial discrimination and pursue reparations for historical injustices related to the transatlantic slave trade.

The minister noted that under the stewardship of the PPP/C government, Guyana has also established itself as a leader in climate and energy security, piloting bold initiatives to foster sustainable development and advance global climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

“The agriculture and food systems sector in Guyana is being repositioned and transformed into an expanded, diversified, modernised, resilient and competitive sector. Moreover, Guyana has emerged as a leader in CARICOM, being the lead head with responsibility for agriculture, agricultural diversification and food security within the CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet,” he said.

The government also resuscitated the Diaspora Unit and re-established stakeholder engagement to improve the services provided to the diaspora. In this regard, since 2020 about 2,035 remigrant applications have been processed.

Police are investigating a accident that occurred Friday morning on Eight Mile Trail (Teperu), Bartica, which resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to others.

At approximately 06:45 hrs, a collision occurred between two vehicles: a motor pickup, GJJ 4867, driven by 45-year-old Faizal Husman from Four Miles Potaro Road, Bartica, and a motor lorry, GXX 6658, driven by 32-year-old Aubrey Ralph Gaskin of Grove, East Bank Demerara.

Gaskin’s lorry also carried two occupants, identified as Venish Sunnchan of Little Diamond and Shamar Henry of Tushen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo.

According to police investigations, the lorry was travelling along the northern side of Eight Mile Trail at high speed, while the pickup, laden with barrels of fuel, was approaching from the opposite direction, also moving at a fast pace. The driver of the pickup reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to a head-on collision with the lorry.

The force of the impact caused the pickup to catch fire, trapping its driver inside. Meanwhile, Gaskin and his two passengers sustained various injuries.

Members of the public quickly came to their aid, extracting them from the lorry and placing them in a passing vehicle which transported them to the Bartica Regional Hospital for medical treatment.

Firefighters from the Guyana Fire Service were dispatched to the scene, where they successfully extinguished the blaze. The remains of the pickup driver, later identified as Faizal Husman, were retrieved from the wreckage and pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Regional Hospital.

Medical staff at the hospital attended to the three occupants of the lorry. Sunnchan was treated for a fractured right foot and discharged, while Gaskin received treatment for an abrasion on his right foot and was also sent away. Henry was admitted for further observation due to the extent of his injuries.

The driver of the lorry, Aubrey Gaskin, is currently in police custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Together, they share a bold vision to raise the league’s standards, enhance professionalism, and drive greater competitiveness, ensuring an exciting and dynamic season ahead.

The road to Season Seven brought its own share of excitement during the qualification play-offs. Lake Mainstay FC claimed their spot in the league with a stellar performance, adding fresh energy to the competition.

Meanwhile, Ann’s Grove United fought valiantly to retain their position, ensuring their presence in another thrilling season. With these additions, the league promises an even more dynamic and competitive environment.

Season Six delivered unforgettable moments and fierce battles, with Guyana Defence Force FC emerging as champions, finishing with an impressive 50 points.

They were followed closely by Slingerz FC with 46 points, while Guyana Police Force FC secured third place with 34 points, proving their resilience and determination.

Season Seven will introduce enhanced development opportunities as each Elite League club is now required to participate in key youth and women’s competitions, including a Under-17 Girls Competition, Under-17 Boys Competition, and the Women’s Division One League.

These tournaments are mandatory under the Concacaf Club Licensing regulations, which stipulate that clubs must field both a youth boys’ and a youth girls’ team to secure a Concacaf Club License which is an essential requirement for participation in regional and international tournaments.

Additionally, the GFF will host a series of comprehensive workshops to support clubs in achieving full compliance with Concacaf Club Licensing regulations.

These workshops will cover essential areas such as governance, ensuring clubs establish transparent structures and accountability frameworks; best practices, focusing on operational excellence and strategic growth; club management, providing guidance on effective administration and leadership; and finance and bookkeeping, equipping clubs with the necessary financial skills to maintain sustainability and transparency.

Through these initiatives, the GFF aims to further professionalise the league, empowering clubs with the knowledge and tools needed to seize greater opportunities on the regional and international stage.

Keon Heywoood is a vivacious 36-year-old who can be described as an artist by heart and soul and someone who embodies all aspects of theatrical performances on every stage he graces.

In his own words, “music is my first love… I know that I’m naturally gifted in that.”

As a Christian child who was active in church, he would play the drums and sing much to the delight of the congregation. His entry into the arts started with dance some 20 years ago.

“I’m still unpacking what drama and performance and theatre is for me personally because it’s always unfolding as you engage with a choreography, a play, a poem or musical. It always unfolds a new dimension, for me it is a means for me to commune with my God.

“It’s a means for me to empty myself in a space, time or context in a performance to create that feeling for my audience so they can experience my life and connection to God,” Keon related.

As a child, Keon had the ability to ‘hold down a crowd’. Some days he accompanied his father to his business in Stabroek Market where he was egged by vendors and passersby to dance. He was urged to ‘whine’ and ‘frolic’ and recalls that his father would put a stop to it because he did not think it was an activity appropriate for his son.

Keon played football instead, and he was probably the worst player on the team. One day while at football practice he observing a group of dancers who were sharing the same space and with an intrigued mind, he got involved.

After stints at several dance agencies, including the National Dance School, Keon is now trained in many forms of dance.

Then in 2010, after a year of positive pestering, a colleague of his persuaded him to join the Theatre Guild Wednesday Night Workshops for acting.

“I wasn’t really interested, then one Wednesday night I just decided to take myself up and come to the theatre guild and I have been here ever since.”

As Keon grew in the arts, studying theatre and securing a certificate in dance before being inducted into the National Drama Company, he explored his skills and discovered his talent for poetry writing.

“I don’t generally say oh I went here and did this and that. Let the proof of the pudding be in the eating.”

As proven in his piece ‘Journey to Eldorado’, Keon not only performs his poetry as is but adds elements of music to bring it to life and make it more relatable to the audience. He makes beats with his feet, hands or mouth to make it more theatrical and engaging, a gift only a true performer can present.

Keon is member of the management committee at the Theatre Guild Playhouse.

“My first introduction to the theatre and the stage was as a dancer in Malcolm DeFreitas’s rendering of ‘Mackentali’, I worked as an assistant stage manager and he created a role for me in the production as a dancer.”

His first actual acting role was in the play ‘Shadows’ by Mosa Telford.

In the broader scheme of things, Keon believes more investments are needed to push Guyanese artists in the form of creating spaces for them to sharpen their skills.

“What happened to the people in Berbice, Essequibo, Up the bank, Lethem and Region 1 and so on? They need the exposure and one of my hopes and dreams is to ensure that spaces like the Theatre Guild are spread across this country so they can be nurtured and trained as artists.”

In his advice to young upcoming performers Keon stated: “One of the first things I noted when I began to get more serious about the arts.

“What I would say to a young and upcoming performer is to know yourself, understand who you are because that is part of what you will be offering as you explore the world of the creative arts.

“You will encounter many different people of different persuasions and unless you are grounded in who you are, you may be influenced and it may not necessarily be in a positive way so having that firm feet on the ground is important.”

He also urges artists to take the time to invest in themselves because valuing your art and craft takes time and effort.

Opposition Parliamentarian, Geeta Chandan- Edmond on Friday expressed her support for the 2025 National Budget, noting that there are “positive measures” in the spending plan that should draw the support of both sides of the National Assembly.

Chandan-Edmond hails from the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), the major constituent of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) opposition coalition.

In what seemed like a departure from the usual critical, unsupportive debate presentations from Opposition Parliamentarians, Chandon-Edmond opened her presentation by calling for civility and urged her colleagues to work together in the interest of all Guyanese.

“There are measures that can and should be supported by both sides of the house, measures that speak to the heart of what governance is all about: improving the lives of people.

“I lend my full support to the positive budgetary measures of this budget. Let us make this a moment where we rise above the fray… and demonstrate that we are worthy of representing the people,” Chandon-Edmond said to an unusually quiet National Assembly.

It appeared as though her statements gave the Parliamentarian much to mull over as there was a clear absence of the usual heckling during her presentation. In fact, her presentation was one that drew support- evidenced by the banging of the desks- from both sides.

She hailed the investments in key areas including the agriculture, infrastructure, education, and social services sectors. She also posited that various budgetary measures will help with poverty alleviation efforts. Still, she offered her recommendations on how certain ventures could be improved.

The establishment of the One Guyana Digital School was one venture that was singled out by the Parliamentarian and hailed as a transformative move that could equip Guyanese youth with the skills needed to support the developing economy adequately. She also said it would allow Guyanese youth to compete internationally.

Though she backed the venture, she said youth in hinterland areas in particular must get more equitable support- be it through digital devices and/or reliable internet access- to benefit from the school.

A stronger focus on cybersecurity was another area she said needs much focus.

As she offered her support and recommendations, the Opposition Parliamentarian said, “I will not stand here in this House, Mr. Speaker, in good conscience and say the budget is completely vacuous and lacks vision. There are some fair measures that will alleviate the cost of living (woes).”

“While I sit on the opposition benches, I must say this, I see no reason why the budget should be a source of division in this house once our proposals and recommendations are considered.”
