West Indies women delivered a commanding all-round performance to secure a nine-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Sunday’s opening One-Day International (ODI).

Captain Hayley Matthews stole the show with a stellar display, as she claimed 2-41 with the ball before smashing an unbeaten 104 off 93 balls in a dominant chase.

Hunting 199 at Warner Park in St. Kitts, West Indies, made light work of the target, cruising to 202-1 in just 31.4 overs.

Matthews, whose innings featured 16 boundaries, shared a sensational 163-run opening partnership with Qiana Joseph, who dazzled with a 79-ball 70, including six fours and four sixes.

The West Indies openers set the tone early, dismantling Bangladesh’s bowling attack with an aggressive yet composed approach. Joseph, in particular, showcased her range with powerful hitting, while Matthews anchored the innings with precision.

Though Joseph fell to Rabeya Khan in the 26th over, the damage was already done. Shemaine Campbelle joined Matthews and added an unbeaten 14 to steer West Indies comfortably across the finish line without further loss.

Earlier, Matthews and her bowlers laid the groundwork for the victory by restricting Bangladesh to 198-9.

Deandra Dottin led the charge with figures of 3-40, while Matthews and Aaliyah Alleyne contributed with two wickets apiece.

Bangladesh, sent in to bat, struggled to build momentum. Openers Fargana Hoque Pinky (10) and Murshida Khatun (40) fell to Dottin and Matthews, respectively, leaving the visitors at 69-2. Khatun’s 53-ball knock featured five boundaries.

Sharmin Akter (42) and captain Nigar Sultana Joty (14) tried to stabilize the innings with a 46-run third-wicket partnership, but their dismissals at 123-4 shifted the momentum firmly in West Indies’ favour.

Sobhana Mostary (35) and Shorna Akter (29) offered resistance with a 54-run fifth-wicket stand, briefly reviving Bangladesh’s hopes of a competitive total. However, both fell within one ball of each other, and that triggered a collapse that saw the final four wickets tumble for just 20 runs.

The victory puts West Indies in a commanding position heading into the second contest on Tuesday, where they will hope to replicate this performance to clinch the series with a game to spare. (SportsMax)

Eshwar Yadobansh, a 33-year-old resident of Adventure Sand Reef, Essequibo Coast, was charged for refusing to take a breathalyser test on Monday.

He appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

The man pleaded guilty and was fined $30,000.

He was also fined $25,000 for driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, and $10,000 for driving an uncertified motor vehicle.

Police ranks on Sunday found about 113 pounds of marijuana at an unfinished concrete building at Wash Clothes Village, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The search was conducted by ranks from the Police Narcotics Branch, Eve Leary, Georgetown.

Police Headquarters said four large parcels were wrapped in transparent plastic; the parcels contained suspected cannabis. No arrest was made, however.

The narcotics were taken to the Narcotics Branch and were weighed. The narcotics amounted to 113.05 pounds.

Investigations are ongoing.

Over 400 residents from Falmouth and New Found Out in Region Ten are now accessing potable water, following the commissioning of a water supply system in each community.

Both systems cost $46.8 million and were commissioned by the Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal on Saturday.

Falmouth’s $22.5 million water system serves 95 per cent of the community’s population while the one at New Found Out is valued at $24.3 million and supplies service to 95 per cent of the community.

Resident of Falmouth, Savrey Braithwaite, is thankful for the new water system. He explained how difficult it was to acquire clean water to use daily, especially during the dry season.

“We are now getting pure water to use. We are now getting good service. The water is clean and we are getting enough. I want to thank the minister and the government for fulfilling their promise. You have done a good job,” Braithwaite stated.

Another resident of Falmouth, Patricia Matthews, said “The water is benefitting all the residents. We want to thank the government for giving us water to our homes.”

Toshao of River’s View, Gregory Williams, also echoed similar sentiments by commending the government for the timely completion of the water system.

“The residents used water from the river [which] is contaminated with cyanide, mercury and different things. They also had to go three to four miles to a creek for water. We are thankful for this,” Williams said.

A resident of New Found Out, Sheila Miller, no longer has to worry about hiking a great distance to the river for water which is sometimes muddy and unsafe to use. She added that most of the residents would sometimes use rainwater.

“I feel happy for this. This is nice,” an excited Miller emphasised, since she is now accessing water from her tap.

During brief remarks, Minister Croal spoke of the government’s manifesto’s promise of ensuring every household is provided with better access to clean and safe water.

He announced that water tanks would be provided to the remaining five per cent of residents who are living far from the water system for water storage.

“All of our people are important to us. We are ensuring that the quality of life is enhanced for everyone. This year, we will be drilling a minimum of 60 wells in the hinterland,” the housing and water minister disclosed.

After four years, access to potable water currently stands at about 93 per cent in the hinterland with the drilling of 130 wells.

The minister stated that the community of Bethany in Region Two will also benefit from a new well soon.

Edwards Ramnaught, a 31-year-old labourer of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, will spend the next two weeks on remand for allegedly stealing a woman’s electric bike.

He appeared at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Wanda Fortune last Friday, charged with simple larceny.

Police said the red electric bike is valued at $60,000 and belongs to Reneta Pooran, a 56-year-old female resident of Grove.

The accused pleaded not guilty and will remain in jail until the matter is called again on February 7.

Police have arrested two men following reports of gunfire in Tucville, Georgetown, on Saturday.

At around 23:00 hrs, officers on mobile patrol received information that led them to the area between Perry and Saman Streets, where they heard two loud explosions, believed to be gunshots.

Upon investigation, the officers observed three men fleeing the scene and running east along the street. The police pursued the suspects and apprehended one of the men, later identified as Darwin Bennons, a 31-year-old vendor from the Meadowbrook Housing Scheme.

At the time of his arrest, Bennons was found carrying a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol in his right hand.

Police took immediate control of the firearm, discovering that the magazine was empty. When asked if he held a firearm licence, Bennons confirmed he did not. He was arrested and cautioned on the offence.

Further inquiries led to the arrest of a second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Ronald Gilbert, a labourer also from Meadowbrook.

Both men were taken to the East La Penitence Police Station for further questioning. Searches of their residences yielded no illegal items.
The suspected firearm was sent for fingerprint analysis, but no prints were found.

The weapon has been marked, sealed in a transparent evidence bag, and sent for ballistics testing.

Both suspects remain in custody and are assisting police with the ongoing investigation.

Orlando Scott, 27, a construction worker of Lot ‘E’ Cummings Park, Sophia has confessed to the robbery under arms at the C&H Supermarket, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.

Police said on Saturday between 12:28 and 12:47 hrs, a video and audio interview was conducted with Scott during which he confessed.

“At the Regional Division 4B Headquarters, Scott was informed of the allegations against him, cautioned in accordance with the Judge’s Rule, and subsequently confessed to committing the crime,” a police statement informed.

The robbery was committed on Yuan Qiao Lin, Ren Quan Zhang, Seeta Singh, and Jason Chetram. These individuals are reportedly the owners, a customer, and a security guard.

Police are investigating an armed robbery on Saturday at the home and goldsmith shop of 54-year-old Shawn DeSouza in Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara.

The robbery is believed to have involved the theft of jewellery valued at $7 million.

The items stolen include a 12-karat gold chain and pendant, as well as a 12-karat gold band, which together totalled 700 pennyweights in weight.

According to police reports, the victim was working on the jewellery in his shop, which is attached to the northern side of his residence.

At approximately 17:00 hrs, while the glass sliding door at the front of the shop was slightly ajar, two unidentified men entered the premises. Both suspects were armed with handguns and immediately threatened the victim.

One of the assailants restrained the victim by tying his hands and feet with zip ties, before forcing him under a table. The suspects then took the jewellery and fled the scene in a white motor vehicle, the number plate of which remains unknown.

Authorities have processed the crime scene, taking photographs and speaking to several individuals in the area as part of the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made as yet.

The police have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in identifying the perpetrators.

Akeem Prince, 34, died early Sunday morning at the hands of his brother Kareem Prince at their Victoria home, East Coast Demerara.

Police said in a statement that the brothers were living together in the same house and that the murder occurred between 04:00hrs and 06:30hrs.

The suspect was arrested and is in custody.

“There was an argument between the two brothers and it is alleged the suspect dealt the deceased chops to his head, which may have resulted in his death,” police reported in a preliminary report.

Rain played spoilsport on the fourth and final day of the second Guyana Harpy Eagles trial match at the Nationals Stadium, Providence.

While the match ended prematurely, the trials provided valuable match practice for the Harpy Eagles as they prepare to defend their West Indies Four-Day Championship from January 29, where they host Barbados Pride.

Resuming on 302-6, Smith’s XI added just 37 runs before being dismissed.

Ushardeva Balgobin, overnight on 70, could only add three more runs before falling to Thaddeus Lovell.

Jonathan Van Lange (45) and Junior Sinclair (23) offered some resistance, but the young and talented off-spinner Romario Ramdeholl’s five-wicket haul, including the dismissal of Sinclair, ensured Smith’s XI were bowled out for 339.

Savory’s XI faced a daunting target of 493 and despite a spirited start from openers Raymond Perez (37) and Brandon Jaikarran (16), they were soon derailed by the spin duo of Junior Sinclair and Veerasammy Permaul.

Permaul (4-48) and Sinclair (2-26) applied relentless pressure, dismantling the middle order. Rain intervened with Savory’s XI struggling at 125-7.

Performances in the two matches will count for a lot.

Skipper Tevin Imlach, Gudakesh Motie, and Kevin Sinclair will miss the first match due to West Indies duties, while Shamar Joseph should also miss out due to injury.
