Australia will play three Tests on their tour of West Indies next year after the two boards agreed to add an extra match to the original schedule.

It will be the first time the two sides have faced each other for three Tests or more since 2015 and the first time in the Caribbean since 2012 when Australia won 2-0.

The series will be the first in the next cycle of the World Test Championship for both teams, which brings a minimum requirement of two Tests.

The previous series between the teams played in Australia earlier this year finished 1-1 after Shamar Joseph inspired West Indies to a seven-run win at the Gabba.

It was West Indies’ first victory over Australia in 21 years.

Initially reported by Nine newspapers, the extension of the Test series was confirmed by Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley on Saturday.

“I am really glad that is going to manifest,” he told SEN radio. “We’re still waiting for an official announcement from the West Indies Cricket Board around precise dates and precise locations but it will be a three-Test series which is obviously big.

“It’s another great opportunity. The World Test Championship prescribed that we needed to play two, at least two. But really, for the fans and for the players, you don’t want to be stuck in the position when it’s one-one and everyone is feeling unsatisfied.”

Hockley, who will step down in March and be replaced by Todd Greenberg, has previously stated a preference for a minimum of three Tests in a series.

“We’ll keep advocating and championing that. Really advocating for three-Test series as an absolute minimum,” he said earlier this year.

ESPNcricinfo understands that Barbados, Grenada and Jamaica are possible locations for the three matches, which are expected to take place from late June.

On the current Future Tours Programme, the schedule also includes three ODIs and three T20Is.

Smith will be joined by his Ravens Basketball Club teammate Dominic Vincente, making his debut on the international 3×3 circuit.

The squad also includes Travis Belgrave of the Eagles Basketball Club and Harold Adams from the Victory Valley Royals in Linden.

Speaking at the company’s Carmichael Street headquarters, VSH United’s Business Development Manager, Mortimer Robertson, underscored the importance of supporting local athletes.

“We at VSH United (Guyana) Inc. value our country’s athletes, especially in basketball, a sport we have supported over the years,” Robertson stated.

“When we received the call, we didn’t hesitate, knowing how critical this tournament is for the growth of 3×3 basketball in Guyana. I know these players personally, and I am confident they will give their best. We wish them success.”

Team Guyana will begin their campaign on the tournament’s opening day, competing in Group A of the qualifying round against the Cayman Islands, Aruba, and Haiti.

To advance to the main draw, Guyana must top their group, setting up potential showdowns with tournament heavyweights Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup, now in its fourth edition, is a marquee event in the Americas, serving as a gateway to global competitions like the FIBA 3×3 World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Since debuting in the inaugural 2021 edition, Guyana has steadily gained recognition as a strong contender in the Caribbean.

The country’s 2022 campaign in Miami was particularly promising, with Delroy James, Gordon James, Shelroy Thomas, and Nikkoloi Smith leading the charge.

Despite narrowly missing the quarter-finals after close losses to Canada (17-19) and Mexico (15-16), Guyana finished 11th out of 17 teams with a commendable record of three wins and two losses.

According to the GBF, the 2024 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup represents more than just competition for Guyana, since gives the country a chance to elevate its basketball profile, gain international recognition, and inspire future players.

As 3×3 basketball continues to grow globally, Guyana’s participation underscores the GBF’s dedication to developing the sport and positioning the nation as a regional force.

Infrastructural works on the Bartica Stelling, Region Seven is advancing significantly, with the project now nearing completion.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill conducted an inspection on Friday morning to assess its progress.

Originally scheduled for completion in October, the project faced delays due to the frequent movement of vessels, which restricted the use of heavy machinery during passenger, vehicle, and cargo loading and offloading operations.

“So, we just held a meeting with all the players MARAD, Transport and Harbour and my engineers who are supervising the works to ensure that we coordinate. As we get into the busy period, Christmas is going to also see a great increase,” he explained.

Thus far, concrete works are now 75 per cent complete, while the link-span bridge has reached 90 per cent completion.

The remaining works include the installation of timber members on the link-span bridge, installation of the scales, and the completion of the fender system.

Despite ongoing construction, Minister Edghill emphasised that the area must remain clean and free of litter, and directed the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) to ensure the stelling is well maintained.

Meanwhile,the minister confirmed that there are no approved fare increases for speedboat operators.

“Speedboat operators caught demanding higher fares during the Christmas period will be banned from the service,” Minister Edghill warned.

When completed, the new stelling is expected to enhance the efficiency of the Bartica Stelling, ensuring it meets the region’s growing demands while fostering safety and economic development.

Meanwhile, Minister Edghill called for heightened safety measures for speedboat operations following a troubling incident where a vessel broke down four times on the river in a single day.

“I have instructed the MARAD staff to ensure it is pulled out and cannot operate again until it is cleared and inspected by boat surveyors from MARAD,” he said.

The minister further highlighted the standard protocol requiring boats to undergo routine engine servicing after a specified number of trips, as he emphasised the need for stringent maintenance standards to protect passengers.

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips, today commissioned the historic 0.65 megawatt grid-forming solar photovoltaic (PV) farm in Mahdia, Potaro-Siparuni (Region Eight).

The project, which is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) under the Energy Matrix Diversification and Strengthening of the Department of Energy (EMISDE) programme, signifies a crucial advancement in Guyana’s sustainable energy journey.

During his remarks, the Prime Minister emphasised the Government’s unwavering commitment to transitioning to renewable energy. He noted that this change aims to foster equitable development and environmental sustainability.

“The commissioning of the 0.65-megawatt grid-forming solar photovoltaic (PV) farm in Mahdia today is a game-changer for renewable energy integration in the region and country, as it sets a new benchmark for future energy projects.”

He said that the solar PV farm demonstrates the Government’s commitment to building a low-carbon future through sustainable energy initiatives, as outlined in the LCDS 2030.

The Prime Minister highlighted the significant economic and environmental benefits of the solar farm, which is expected to save $80.5m (GYD) by reducing diesel consumption by 309,681 litres per year. Additionally, it will cut carbon dioxide emissions by 672,561 kilograms. Some 3,000 residents are set to benefit.

“This solar farm will drive socio-economic transformation in the region by supplying reliable and affordable energy, fostering the growth of small businesses and micro-enterprises, and boosting local economic activity,”

The Honourable Prime Minister also lauded the collaborative efforts between key stakeholders, including IDB representatives, the Guyana Energy Agency, and local officials, to bring this project to fruition.

“The success of this initiative reflects the strength of partnerships and the Government’s vision for a low-carbon future.”

The 0.65 MW solar farm, which includes a 1,500 kWh battery energy storage system, is an addition to Mahdia’s energy infrastructure. It integrates seamlessly with the existing mini-grid, providing a stable and resilient power supply.

This state-of-the-art facility can independently support the existing grid and ensure energy reliability during peak demand and adverse weather conditions.

The project, completed at G$362.41 million, also includes a 2-kilometre, 13.8 kV transmission line for efficient energy distribution. The solar PV farm is expected to supply 935 MWh of electricity annually.

Aligned with the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, the Mahdia solar PV farm is part of a broader initiative that has already installed solar PV systems in Lethem and Bartica. Improvements are also slated for Wakenaam and Leguan, among other regions.

These efforts aim to increase Guyana’s solar energy capacity to over 39 MW by 2025.

The Government of Guyana has taken note of a Facebook post that seems to suggest that there may have been an incident infringing the religious rights of one or more Muslim citizens during the registration process for the $100,000 Cash Grant.

We wish to clarify that during the training of enumerators involved in the registration exercise, clear instructions were issued requiring staff to avoid any form of discrimination against any citizen. More importantly, our training addressed how citizens wearing the Hijab should be processed. Specifically, the enumerators are required to take photographs of citizens with the Hijab, and those wearing the burqa (face veil) should be escorted into a private area for their photographs to be taken by a female enumerator.

To ensure an environment of comfort and inclusivity is achieved for the process nationally, we have selected public venues that are within proximity to residential areas and considerate of the religious and cultural backgrounds of all citizens.

To date, of the tens of thousands who were registered, we have only seen one incident on Facebook. Even though the incident was not formally reported, it is currently being investigated, and if anyone is found guilty, he or she will be penalized.

In 2024, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) conditionally approved 26 Bed and Breakfast properties, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond has revealed.

She was speaking at her end-of-year press conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal.

Minister Walrond noted how these facilities continue to contribute to unique and personalised experiences for persons visiting Guyana, as the country expands its accommodation options.

“The Bread and Breakfast sector is playing a critical role in complementing the operations of major hotels, while offering unique, personalised experiences. Most of these are owned by persons who put an attachment to their house so you get that individual experience,” she expressed.

Through this facility, Minister Waldron continued that the visitor gets to experience Guyana’s culture, hospitality and charm making it a vital component of the overall tourism strategy.

“And you can see how this benefits the ordinary Guyanese,” she pointed out.

“We continue to actively work with private property owners to expand and enhance the Bed and Breakfast options across the country and this is not just in Georgetown but in every single region,” she added.

She said technical support, guidance and resources are offered to these property owners through the GTA regarding the internationally recognised standards that they should maintain.

Chairman of A New and United Guyana (ANUG) Dr. Mark France admitted to medical malpractice which caused him to be suspended from practicing medicine for two years.

The executive member made this disclosure during his party’s press conference on Friday.

“That is what I am saying. It was misconduct,” Dr. France said in response to whether he was found culpable of medical malpractice in 2016.

He did not divulge details of the misconduct.

Dr France admitted that the issue was taken to the medical council which found him culpable, and as such, he was unable to practice medicine from 2016 to 2018.

He said that the matter was heard by Justice Jo Ann Barlow.

The executive member sought to downplay the issue, insisting that it was settled.

“It is a matter that has been laid to rest. The issue was left in the past,” he stressed.

However, a source with knowledge of the issue said that the matter was very serious as forgery was involved.

Dr. France’s admission of professional misconduct sharply contradicts recent statements by him towards the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

Just a few days ago, he launched a scathing attack on GECOM which supposedly erred in allowing a joinder list MP to sit in the National Assembly for over one year.

The ANUG Chairman had said that the MP’s occupation of the seat has “serious implications” for Guyana’s Parliament.

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown has placed 10 waste receptacles at strategic points along bus stops on Regent Street in a bid to deter littering and manage garbage build-up.

The waste receptacles were donated to the municipality by Mings Products and Services, and City Hall is hoping that other businesses will come on board to help with the littering woes plaguing both M&CC and residents.

“Because of the work that has been done daily by my department (Solid Waste Management Department), starting from 4 am; we would clean streets in central Georgetown consistently for about two years now. Mr. Ming saw the initiative and he thought it fit to come on board,” Head of Solid Waste Management Walter Narine shared.

Speaking with the News Room on Friday, he explained that the receptacles are large blue drums that have six inches of concrete at the base so that it’s difficult for someone attempting to steal it.

Mr. Ming has also donated plastic bags to go with the bins, Narine said.

“We are hopeful that other businesses will come on board to provide bins because the more bins we place around the city the less excuse there is for people to litter.”

In a statement, M&CC said the donation will go a long way in aiding the Council in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the city.

“The bins, which will be strategically placed throughout the city, are expected to help reduce littering and improve waste management efforts, particularly in high-traffic areas,” the municipality said.

“We are proud to contribute to the wellbeing of Georgetown.

Our company is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen, and it’s an honour to support the city in its efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment for all its residents” the statement quoted Stanley Ming as saying.

Keesha Greene, 29, and Shaquille Thompson, 28, two Cheddi Jagan International Airport workers, were arrested after they were caught with cocaine on Thursday.

In a press release, the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) said a quantity of cocaine was found strapped on the body of Green, an aviation security officer during a routine search.

She was subsequently arrested and taken to CANU’s headquarters along with a quantity of cocaine, which weighed 2.152 kilogrammes (or about 4.74 pounds).

Follow-up investigations, CANU said, led to Thompson’s arrest. He is an airport security officer and he was nabbed with cocaine that weighed 2.134 kilogrammes (or about 4.7 pounds).

In a subsequent release, CANU said Greene was Friday sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $3.2 million after appearing before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Diamond’s Magistrate’s Court.

Meanwhile, Thompson pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the Magistrate on Friday. Bail was refused and the matter was adjourned until January 8, 2025.
