The much-anticipated second annual GT Beer Floodlight Tapeball tournament commenced last weekend in Essequibo with a number of teams vying for top honours.

This year’s edition features an exciting line-up of 24 teams, including Royal Strikers, Hackney, Golden Fleece, Jaguar, HVA Spartans, AZSS Phoenix, Team Royals, Renegades CC, Rising Star, United Crew, Maverick’s S.C., Charity, New Road Titans, Evolution, Queens Town Ariel A, Queens Town Ariel B, Richmond United, Affiance, Burukelli Jaguars, Pomeroon All-Stars, GT Warriors, Mashabo and Reliance Hustlers.

The opening weekend was staged at Pomona ground, while the final weekend of game on November 23 and 24 will take place at the Affiance Number One ground.

Matches are scheduled to begin at 18:00h, with the promise of a vibrant atmosphere combining fierce competition and community spirit.

Speaking at the launch, the GT Beer Brand Ambassador Dwain Bristol emphasised the importance of Essequibo as a focal point for sports development.

“Even if we don’t run the tournament countrywide, we have to run it in Essequibo. This is not just from a GT Beer perspective but a corporate perspective because shortly after this, we’re running a Banks Beer tournament also in Essequibo.”

“We like the sportsmanship, we like the competitiveness. Of course, that’s what drives the passion, and it’s something we want to be a part of. We’re continuously getting support from this community with the brands, and it’s only fitting that we give back.”

Organiser Rawle Pearce shared that the event is designed to cater to families, with bouncy castles and trampolines for children and a well-stocked bar and food stalls for adults.

Adding to the excitement, the second weekend will feature matches showcasing four female teams, further expanding the tournament’s inclusivity. Incentives for the female matches are yet to be confirmed.

Participating teams will compete for a first prize of trophy and G$225,000, while the second prize will be a trophy and G$125,000, and a trophy for third.

Pakistan-born cricketer Hassan Khan is ready to take on the challenge of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSLT20) as he joins the ranks of the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Known for his versatility as a left-arm spinner and a dependable lower-order batsman, Khan is thrilled to represent the Warriors in this exciting global tournament, running from November 26 to December 7, 2024, at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

“I’m excited to join the Guyana Amazon Warriors and determined to help the team win matches,” said Hassan Khan, who played for Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the CPL earlier this year.

“This tournament is a big stage, and I’m here to give it my all. Every game is an opportunity to make a difference, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to ensure the Warriors come out on top. Let’s win it together!”

The tournament promises action-packed entertainment, with 10 thrilling group-stage matches and the much-anticipated grand finale on December 7.

A Linden housewife, 42, was robbed and then raped by a man at her house sometime around 01:30 hrs Monday.

Police Headquarters reported that the woman went to bed at around 20:30 hrs Sunday and was awakened at about 01:30 hrs when a man, who is about six feet tall, was in her house.

She lives in a two-storey wooden and concrete house.

The man reportedly grabbed her from behind, and placed a knife to her neck, demanding cash and jewelry.

The victim reportedly told the man that she did not have any money and he became annoyed and took her downstairs, threw her on a mattress which was spread on the ground, and raped her.

The woman told investigators that the man continued demanding jewelry from her and being fearful for her life, she handed over t several items. The items the man took include two gold chains (worth $250,000), one pair of gold earrings (worth $200,000), one gold hand band (worth $200,000), one black and green flashlight (worth $5,000) and $5,000 cash.

The man then made good his escape on foot through the back door.

Detectives processed the scene and CCTV cameras seen in the area are to be reviewed. Police are looking for the suspect as investigations continue.

The inaugural Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) Harmony T10 Tapeball League commenced Sunday, electrifying fans at the Transport Sports Club in Georgetown with a series of exhilarating matches.

In a straight knockout format, Success Strike Force, I.B.S, Kings, and The Other Guys emerged victorious from their respective encounters, setting the stage for an exciting tournament.

Highlighting the day’s action, Brian Sookram of The Other Guys delivered a sensational performance, hammering six sixes and eight fours in a blistering unbeaten 83 off just 28 balls, steering his team to a commanding chase.

Meanwhile, Ryan Latiff from Kings contributed with a quickfire 26* and took two pivotal wickets.

Ryan Bagwandin of I.B.S. made history by scoring the tournament’s first half-century, smashing 60 runs (6×4; 5x6s) in just 24 balls.

England leave West Indies with a 3-1 T20I series victory after the final match of their Caribbean tour was washed out.

Play was abandoned after just five overs in the fifth and final T20I with Evin Lewis and Shai Hope steering the hosts to 44 without loss before a heavy storm set in at Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia.

It wasn’t quite the start West Indies’ opening pair had staged less than 24 hours earlier, when they raced to 56 for nought in the first five overs and 136 for 0 in nine, on their way to chasing down a record 219 in Saturday’s dead rubber.

But it wasn’t far off, with Lewis striking two sixes and three fours on his way to 29 not out before the rain arrived.

Lewis had just pulled a John Turner delivery for a thunderous six over deep midwicket and sent the next ball in the air wide of mid-on for four before he was rapped on the helmet by a steepling bouncer attempting another pull on the last ball of the over – and ultimately the match.

The rain arrived just as he was about to undergo on-field concussion checks, but he walked off smiling with the rest of the players.

With Hope unbeaten on 14 off 10 balls, it was an abrupt end to what had loomed as another entertaining encounter to end the series after the same pitch had yielded 32 sixes on Saturday.

On that occasion, West Indies had won the toss for the only time in this series, but they made a strong start in the face of Jos Buttler’s decision to bowl first on Sunday.

Turner, who was playing just his second T20I after making his debut in the fourth game of this series, conceded 22 runs from his two overs while Jofra Archer, replacing Saqib Mahmood for this match, went for 16 off 2.

Jamie Overton, who didn’t bowl despite taking the field on Saturday, conceded five runs off his solitary over on Sunday.

Player of the Series Mahmood was comfortably the leading wicket-taker for the series with nine at an average of 10.55 and an economy rate of 6.33 with a best of 4 for 43 in the 1st T20I, eight of his wickets coming in the powerplay.

Next best was West Indies’ left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein with five.

“The one thing I noticed being here previously is the crosswinds at most grounds,” Mahmood told the post-match presentation. “I felt that if I wanted to take the new ball, I’d have to work on my away-swinger a little bit just because Reece Topley and Jofra [Archer] would want the new ball from the other end to swing the ball back in. That’s something I worked on. To perform and show that in a game was nice.”

Phil Salt was the leading run-scorer with 162 including 103 not out in the first game and 55 in the fourth. Jacob Bethell, his 21-year-old team-mate, also impressed with 127 runs for once out, and at a superior strike rate of 173.97.

As Government continues to implement its Student loan write-off programme aggressively, additional measures to improve ease of access to the initiative by prospective beneficiaries were announced today by Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and the Public Service Dr. Ashni Singh.

Minister Singh also urged persons to submit their applications as soon as possible, so as to facilitate timely processing of the applications in the interest of ensuring that all eligible persons benefit from the write-off of their outstanding student loans.

In his announcement regarding the additional accessibility measures for the Student loan write-off programme, the Minister outlined the following:

·Fully online submission of applications is now possible through the Ministry of Finance website at https://studentloanwriteoff.gov.gy/apply/new.

·Drop Boxes for hard copy submission of application form will be placed at all 10 Regional Democratic Council Offices countrywide with immediate effect, as well as the Ministry of Education at 26 Brickdam, and at the University of Guyana Tain Campus, Berbice.

·Applicants may also mail in their application via any post office to the Student Loan Agency. Persons are advised to address their envelope to: Student Loan Agency, PO Box 101544, Georgetown, and state their name and address aback of the envelope.

·Application forms will also be available at all RDC and NDC offices countrywide

Eligible applicants are reminded that they can still download the application form via the Ministry of Finance’s website on this link: https://finance.gov.gy/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Student-Loan-Application-Form-2024-Final.pdf. The hard copy of this form can also be submitted to the Student Loan Agency at the University of Guyana Turkeyen.

It would be recalled that in May of this year, the Government announced its Student Loan Write Off Programme. In keeping with Government’s Manifesto commitment to deliver free education by 2025, in October President Irfaan Ali also announced that by January 2025, tuition fees at the University of Guyana will be abolished. Further, tuition fees at all Government technical and vocational training institutes will be abolished, including the Guyana Industrial Training Centre. the Guyana School of Agriculture and the Carnegie School of Home Economics. This expanded measure is slated to benefit over 3000 additional persons. It also forms part of Government’s broader initiative to enhance human capital development to reduce inequality and improve access to education to every Guyanese citizen.

The Minister further encouraged persons to utilise all the training opportunities the Government has made available to upgrade and uplift their skills so as to enable them to fully take up the wide range of available job opportunities across the country, and further contribute and benefit from the unprecedented growth and transformation of the economy.
