A 24-year-old man, identified as Neil Miggins, also known as “Scissors Head,” was injured following a police confrontation late Thursday night in Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara.
At approximately 23:30 hrs, a team of police officers visited Miggins’ residence in connection with a robbery investigation. The suspect is accused of robbing Ronston Bostwick of $300,000 in cash on October 26, 2024, while armed with a handgun.
Upon arrival, officers contacted Miggins, who was at the upper flat of his two-storey wooden and concrete home. Miggins reportedly pushed his head through a bedroom window and was informed of the allegations against him. He denied the accusations and refused to open the door to the police.
In an attempt to evade capture, Miggins jumped through an eastern window from the upper floor and ran into the path of one of the officers. During a struggle, Miggins reportedly grabbed the officer’s 9mm pistol and tried to disarm him. The firearm discharged, and a round struck Miggins in the lower right foot.
Miggins was immediately apprehended and transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he received medical treatment and was later discharged. He was placed into custody at the Parfaite Harmonie Police Station as investigations continue.

As of mid-2024, there have been 174 reported cases of sexual and gender-based violence against women in Guyana, many of whom are Venezuelan migrants who came to the region seeking refuge.
This alarming figure was revealed by a representative from the non-governmental organisation Blossom Inc. during a presentation at the 191st session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The hearing focused on the impact of gender violence on migrants, sex workers, and transgender women.
Blossom Inc.’s statistics show that between 2020 and mid-2024, a total of 307 cases were reported among Venezuelan migrants, reflecting a significant and troubling increase in incidents of violence.
To address this, the representative informed the forum that Blossom Inc. has been providing vital support to this vulnerable population. The services offered include trauma counselling, forensic interviews, psychosocial support, and legal assistance.
“The escalation in violence is particularly pronounced in Region 7, where 174 cases have been reported. This region, heavily associated with mining activities, has become a hotspot for exploitation and trafficking due to its transient population and limited law enforcement presence,” the representative explained.
She further highlighted that undocumented migrant women, often without legal status, are hesitant to seek help from authorities, fearing deportation. This leaves them trapped in a dangerous cycle of abuse.
“Several socio-economic factors contribute to the heightened risks of violence against migrant women and girls. Among the most significant are economic exploitation, trafficking, lack of legal protections, cultural and language barriers—and, of course, weak border controls and law enforcement gaps due to the porous borders between Guyana and Venezuela,” the representative said.
Despite the organisation’s efforts, she noted that challenges persist, particularly in extending services to remote regions where many victims are located.
“The rising incidence of violence against migrant women in Guyana, particularly in Regions 1, 2, and 7, calls for urgent and coordinated intervention,” she stressed.
She also called for enhanced law enforcement presence and the expansion of support services to better assist these vulnerable groups.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by these communities, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixeira, addressed the forum, emphasising that the government has been working “tirelessly” to ensure equal protection, support, and access to justice for all.
Importantly, she noted that the legislative framework and range of services provided are not limited to any specific groups but apply equally to both nationals and non-nationals.
“This inclusive approach underscores the state’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all women, regardless of their identity, nationality, or background,” Teixeira stated.
Teixeira went on to highlight that in recent years, the state has taken significant steps to address domestic violence, support vulnerable communities, reduce stigma and discrimination, and combat human trafficking.
Although these efforts have been ongoing for decades, she pointed out that in the past five years, the government, through its various arms, has implemented a series of legislative policies and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the fight against gender-based violence.
Among these efforts are the passage of the new Family Violence Act, ongoing revisions to the Sexual Offences Act, strengthened inter-agency collaboration, the creation of special programmes for Venezuelan migrants, and an expansion of sensitisation campaigns, particularly in remote areas.

The Golden Jaguars started their CONCACAF Nations League Play-In campaign with a commanding 4–1 victory against Barbados.
The match was held at the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Technical Centre on Friday night.
Barbados struck early via Niall Reid-Stephen in the 17th minute, catching Guyana off guard and creating a challenging start for the visitors.
However, the Jaguars quickly regrouped, with forward Omari Glasgow leading the charge.
Glasgow equalised in the 26th minute with a well-taken finish that shifted the momentum in Guyana’s favour.
The second half belonged entirely to the Jaguars. Glasgow netted his second goal in the 59th minute, putting Guyana in the lead for the first time.
It was a historic for 20-year-old Glasgow as he became Guyana’s all-time leading goalscorer with 19 goals, surpassing the previous mark of 18 held by Nigel Codrington.
Just two minutes later, Osaze DeRosario extended the advantage, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to score in the 61st minute.
Debutant Enoch George added the finishing touch in stoppage time (90+2), marking his international debut with a goal and sealing the win for Guyana.
Despite Barbados’ early pressure, Guyana’s disciplined play and effective counterattacking strategy allowed them to dominate the remainder of the match.
The result gives the Jaguars a significant advantage heading into the second leg.
President of the Guyana Football Federation Wayne Forde commended the team’s performance, stating, “Congrats to our Jaguars, they were dominant tonight against a spirited Barbadian team. They cannot afford to take Barbados lightly at home and must remain focused and disciplined on Tuesday night.”
With one foot firmly in the next round, the Golden Jaguars will look to deliver another strong performance on home soil to seal their qualification for the Gold Cup preliminaries.

The Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Under-15, 50-over Inter-Association tournament, dubbed the ‘Next Generation’, is set for November 17-25.
The tournament will feature four Area Associations, namely East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB), Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), East Bank Cricket Association (EBCA) and West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA). A fifth team, a Select XI, will also compete in the competition.
The contest includes five rounds, with games happening at the La Bonne Intention, Queen’s College, Farm and Meten-Meer-Zorg ground, starting 09:00h daily. Participants will battle in classic white cricket attire, utilising a red cricket ball.
DCB President Bissoondyal Singh expressed his belief in the tournament’s ability to nurture young talent, stating that it will demonstrate players’ skills and enhance their development.
He also made clear his enthusiasm for the inclusion of the Select XI team, led by Shahid Ramzan, a promising young player who had an impressive first appearance last year.
Additionally, Brandon Henry, who played for the Guyana Under-15 team earlier this year, will be participating.

Social media star Jake Paul defeated legendary boxer Mike Tyson via unanimous decision late Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in one of the most improbable match-ups in the sport’s history.
All three judges ruled the fight in favour of Paul, with scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73.
The win improves Paul’s professional record to 11-1 while dropping Tyson to 50-7.
“He’s exactly what I thought, one of the greatest to ever do it,” Paul said after the fight.
Tyson was asked if he was officially done boxing. He said he wasn’t sure.
“I don’t think so,” Tyson said on the broadcast. “Maybe the brother (Logan Paul).”
Paul, 27, a social media star with more than 27 million Instagram followers and nearly 21 million YouTube subscribers, cruised in the bout.
After a first round that saw Tyson aggressive, his age caught up to him. Tyson appeared slow for most of the fight and barely landed any significant punches.
His offensive output dropped considerably from the mid-rounds on. The much younger Paul peppered his opponent with jabs and hooks throughout the bout while taking little damage.
Paul was asked after the fight who he wants next.
“Anyone I want,” Paul said. “Everyone is next on the list.”
Paul made his professional debut in 2020. He has wins that include former UFC stars Ben Askren, Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz and Mike Perry.
His lone loss is a split decision last year against boxer Tommy Fury, the half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
Tyson, 58, is known as one of the best- and most intimidating- boxers ever. He opened his professional career with 19 straight finishes, 12 of which came in the first round.
He later knocked out Trevor Berbick at the age of 20 to become the youngest heavyweight champion ever.
Tyson reigned over the division from 1987 to 1990, claiming and retaining the WBA, WBC, and IBF belts en route to a 37-0 start.
His first career loss was a 10th-round knockout defeat to Buster Douglas in 1990 in what is considered the greatest upset in boxing history.
Tyson returned to the ring 20 times since that defeat, going 13-5 with two “no contests.” He has not competed since losing to Kevin McBride in 2005. He was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011.
In the co-main event, Katie Taylor defeated Amanda Serrano via unanimous decision (95-94 on all three judges cards). The bout, a rematch from their epic first meeting, was another instant classic that saw 324 landed punches.
