As the busy holiday and Christmas shopping period approach, the Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission (CCAC) takes the opportunity to remind consumers to ensure that they receive value for money by being vigilant and asserting their consumer rights in keeping with the Consumer Affairs Act, (CAA) No. 13 of 2011.  Suppliers are also reminded to be compliant and adhere to the law.

It is anticipated that during the Festive Season, there will be a spike in consumer complaints at the Commission. Especially in relation to purchases of Electrical and electronic appliances.

It is advised that, consumers should make a list and research products/services and suppliers before deciding on the final purchase.  All contracts/agreements be thoroughly read and understood before signing.

Consumers are also urged to demand a receipt for all purchases since receipts serve as sufficient proof of purchase to facilitate a return, refund, or exchange.

All items should be inspected before final purchase and written warranties no less than 6 months should be requested.

The return of non-defective goods should be done within 7 days of its purchase and the goods should be in their original package, unused, and not tampered with.  In this instance, a supplier can charge up to a 10% restocking fee in keeping with the Law.

Suppliers should refrain from displaying the “No Refund” signs or refuse to offer refunds, returns, or exchanges as guided by the conditions under the Consumer Affairs Act.

To improve the experience for shoppers, farmers and vendors President Dr Irfaan Ali has ordered the installation of security cameras at the newly-constructed Leonora Market on the West Coast Demerara.

These devices will enable fully electronic monitoring and there will also be the placement of Police Officers around the facility.

“The Commander, by next week Saturday, you have to ensure that you have security system right around the market.

“We are going to put cameras in the market so that we will have full electronic monitoring of everything in the market so we can have a safe environment,” President Ali announced.

A Police outpost is also expected to be established soon in close proximity to the market.

The President made the commitment during a visit to the market where he interacted with vendors.

He also promised that as early as Monday, works will commence to build a new road to improve access to the market as well the improvement of bridges and drains, among other things.

“As we work together in developing this facility, you will see that on Friday nights you would have shopping out here. You will see a shopping hour and a market hour expand naturally,” President Ali said.

The goal, he noted, is to ensure there is a safe and pleasurable shopping experience for vendors when they visit the market.

Anthony Evelyn, who overcame a slow start in both races, came from behind with great skill, and won the two rookie races at the ENet Caribbean Clash of Champions, will be a bright spark for the future.

He looks to be a handful when he moves to the Starlet Cup in 2025.

Evelyn, the son of veteran racer Keith Evelyn, drove at the ENet Caribbean Clash of Champions on Sunday like a seasoned pro.

His determined efforts were a treat to fans in both races on Sunday.

Though Evelyn qualified on pole, Jeremy TenPow took an early lead.

However, Evelyn skillfully battled his way back to the front in the race by overtaking on the straightaway.

Evelyn’s best time in that race was 1:26.784s, while Shariff Khan (1:33.712s) was second, followed by Mohamed Saifudeen Roshandin (1:33.968s).

Acknowledging he has a faster machine, he credited the support and insights from his father and other team members, which has given him the confidence to perform better.

More so, he is already plotting his ascent to the Starlet Cup, noting that his launch is an aspect they will address as they seek to balance power with efficiency.

His impressive performance was not limited to Sunday.

He progressively improved throughout the 2024 Rookie season, which undoubtedly makes him one to watch in 2025.

Again and again, Shan Seejatan is the gift that keeps on giving as he secured a seventh Group Two Championship title when the ENet Caribbean Clash of Champions concluded Sunday at the South Dakota Circuit.

The success of ‘Mr. Consistent’ is a testament to his team, led by Brian TenPow, which has given him great success with his Honda Civic.

Seejatan won two out of three on Sunday, consolidating his 13-point lead in the championship ahead of race weekend.

With Chet Singh, Seejatan’s closet challenger, unable to pose the threat he did early in the season, it became clear where the championship title would land.

But it was still no walk in the park, as Rameez Mohamed faced a stern challenge and won the lone race that Seejatan could not complete.

Seejatan’s quest for success has not ended, as he related to News Room Sport; his team will be coming harder in 2025 as the competition continues to improve.

Jos Buttler smashed a blistering 83 from 45 balls as England cruised to a seven-wicket win over West Indies in the second T20.

The England captain came in after Phil Salt was dismissed from the first ball of the tourists’ chase and proceeded to hit eight fours and six sixes in a stunning knock.

Buttler dominated a 129-run stand with opener Will Jacks before the pair fell in the same Romario Shepherd over.

However, the damage had been done and the visitors went on to overhaul West Indies’ 158-8 with 31 balls to spare.

England are 2-0 up in the five-match series after victory in both matches in Barbados and now head to St. Lucia for the last three games of the tour.

Earlier, West Indies again had to rely on lower-order runs to take them up to a somewhat competitive total.

After slipping to 35-3 in the Powerplay, Rovman Powell led the rebuild for the home side, but when Dan Mousley bowled him for 43, they were 102-6.

A few lusty blows from Shepherd, Matthew Forde and debutant Terrance Hinds got West Indies beyond 150 but, with Buttler in such fine form, England made light work of knocking off the runs.

Powell stabilises Windies before lower-order runs

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl for the second night running, England again started well with the ball on a surface providing plenty of assistance for the seamers.

Saqib Mahmood had Brandon King caught with his second ball before a brutish, rising delivery from Jofra Archer- in for the injured Reece Topley- was gloved behind by Evin Lewis.

Mahmood was struggling for control given the prodigious swing on offer, sending down a flurry of wides, but when he did get it right, Roston Chase had no answer and was trapped lbw.

Windies captain Powell batted steadily alongside Nicholas Pooran but the latter fell to Liam Livingstone just as they looked set to kick on after a watchful rebuild.

Sherfane Rutherford was dismissed in Livingstone’s next over, but Powell did manage to accelerate before he was undone by the unexpected pace of England ‘spinner’ Mousley.

The Warwickshire all-rounder got his yorker right to castle Powell for his maiden international wicket in an impressive spell of 2-29.

Just as in the series opener, West Indies had their lower-order, assisted by all-rounder Shepherd, to thank for preventing them slumping to a significantly below-par total as they took 32 runs from the last two overs to give themselves hope. (BBC)

Police are investigating a tragic river mishap that led to the death of Davenand Williams, a 34-year-old man from Kangaruma Village, in the Middle Mazaruni River region.

The incident occurred near Fish Pond, involving a collision between a jet boat and a wooden boat.

According to the investigation, a jet boat, known as the River Quest and captained by Odil Cozier, was navigating upstream towards Isseneru Village, located on the right bank of the Mazaruni River. Cozier was carrying four passengers and cargo at the time.

On the opposite side of the river, Williams and another passenger, James McKenzie, were traveling in a wooden boat powered by a 40-horsepower outboard engine.

As the two vessels approached each other, Cozier reportedly noticed the wooden boat and attempted to steer his jet boat further to the side to avoid a collision. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the wooden boat veered into the path of the jet boat.

The collision caused the wooden boat to capsize, throwing Williams and McKenzie into the water. Passengers aboard the jet boat quickly responded, pulling the two men from the river and transporting them to Issano Landing. Despite efforts to assist, Dr. Wilson, who was on site, pronounced Williams dead.

Williams, of Amerindian descent, was found to have sustained significant injuries to his face. McKenzie, meanwhile, was injured in his legs and upper back but was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Police are examining both the actions of the jet boat’s captain and the sequence of events leading up to the fatal incident. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together more details.

The tragic event has shaken the close-knit community of Kangaruma Village, where Williams was well-known.

In a heartfelt display of reverence and unity, Guyana marked Remembrance Day with a solemn ceremony at the Cenotaph in Georgetown early Sunday morning.

The ceremony, which honoured the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace, freedom, and justice, was attended by national leaders, diplomats, military personnel, and citizens alike.

The event, which began with a minute of silence, was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by brave men and women who fought for the dignity of all people, the preservation of peace, and the pursuit of social justice.

Dr. Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, delivered an inspiring address during the ceremony.

“On this Sunday of remembrance, we meet again to recall with gratitude those who, through the years, have made personal sacrifices in the continuing struggle for human dignity, social justice, and freedom from all forms of oppression,” he stated.

“Their example strengthens our resolve to maintain our efforts at peace with justice and prosperity for all peoples.”

President Ali’s speech echoed a message of solidarity, urging all Guyanese to reflect on the significance of the day.

As part of the morning’s proceedings, the “Last Post” was sounded, followed by a moment of silent reflection. The ceremony concluded with the hymn “God, Our Help in Ages Past,” sung by attendees in a collective expression of respect and remembrance for those who gave their lives for a better future.

The occasion was not just a commemoration of the past but a reaffirmation of Guyana’s commitment to peace and justice.

President Ali’s call for continued efforts in the pursuit of human dignity resonated strongly with the crowd.
