$60M St. Gabriel’s Nursery School officially opens in Georgetown

The Georgetown community celebrated a major educational milestone on Friday with the grand opening of St. Gabriel’s Nursery School. The $60 million facility, which aims to deliver high-quality early childhood education, was officially commissioned in a ceremony attended by local education officials and enthusiastic families.

The opening of St. Gabriel’s Nursery School marks a significant advancement in early childhood education for the region. The modern facility boasts state-of-the-art classrooms, interactive learning environments, and outdoor play areas, all designed to promote both academic and social development for young children.

During the ceremony, key figures emphasized the importance of this new institution. Minister of Education, the Honourable Priya Manickchand, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting Guyana’s commitment to education despite the non-mandatory status of nursery schooling.

“Nursery education may not be compulsory in Guyana, but we have the highest enrollment rate of nursery-aged children in the Commonwealth Caribbean,” Minister Manickchand stated. “From 2020 to now, we have built 42 nursery schools across the country. This demonstrates our commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure across all levels.”

The Minister underscored the critical role of nursery education in laying the foundation for future academic success. “The early years are crucial,” she explained. “If children enter Grade One struggling with basic literacy, it affects their entire academic journey. Investing in nursery education is essential to ensure children receive a strong start.”

In addition to building new schools, the Ministry has been active in supporting parents and students. Minister Manickchand noted the introduction of the ‘Roraima Readers’ series, which aims to ensure that every child exits nursery reading at an appropriate level. The Ministry also supports families through the ‘Because We Care’ Cash Grant, providing $45,000 per child, and through the Juice and Biscuit program, which ensures that children receive a nutritious snack.

Assistant Chief Education Officer for Nursery Schools, Devendra Persaud, praised the role of high-quality educational infrastructure. “High-quality buildings, classrooms, and equipment are vital for effective learning,” Persaud said. “St. Gabriel’s Nursery School is a testament to our government’s commitment to providing equal educational opportunities for all children, whether in rural or urban areas.”

The new nursery school, which began construction in March 2022, was completed at a total cost of $60.1 million. The project, managed by contractor Trevon David’s, was finished within a 7-month period, followed by an additional 7 months for defects liability. The facility accommodates 161 pupils and 13 staff members across 10 classrooms, with an equal division between first-year and second-year classes.

The grand opening ceremony included a ribbon-cutting event, guided tours of the facility, and a showcase of the innovative programs to be offered. Families had the opportunity to explore the new resources and meet the dedicated team of educators who will lead the children’s educational journeys.

Venezuelan labourer arrested with ‘molly’; cocaine in Essequibo

Police in Regional Division #3 conducted a significant drug operation on Thursday, leading to the arrest of a Venezuelan labourer identified as Angel Ramirez, also known as “Habibi.”

Acting on intelligence, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at a makeshift camp in Inner Retreat Village. During the operation, Ramirez, a 32-year-old resident, was observed discarding a white sock as the officers approached.

The officers, who were in plain clothes, identified themselves and proceeded to search the premises. Inside the discarded sock, they discovered a white container holding three silver-wrapped packages of a whitish rock-like substance suspected to be cocaine.

The search also revealed five transparent plastic bags containing a similar whitish powder, believed to be cocaine, as well as several zip-loc bags filled with pills suspected to be ‘Molly.’ Additionally, a sum of thirteen thousand Guyana dollars (G$13,000) was found.

Ramirez was promptly informed of the suspicions regarding his possession of narcotics. After being cautioned, he was arrested and transported to the Parika Police Station along with the confiscated substances.

The suspected cocaine was weighed at 5.1 grams, and the ‘Molly’ was weighed at 1.5 grams. All items were marked, sealed, and lodged for further analysis.

Ramirez remains in custody as the investigation continues.

Teacher arrested with 56lbs of marijuana

Police officers from Regional Division #5 apprehended a 43-year-old teacher from No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice, on Thursday after discovering a significant quantity of cannabis in his possession.

The arrest took place during a routine mobile patrol in the Blairmont Station District.

The incident occurred when police, patrolling near the Rosignol Stelling area, observed a silver-gray Fielder wagon with registration number PAB 7365 emerging from the Cabbage Factory Koker area.

The vehicle was flagged down and subjected to a search, which led to the discovery of two large brown bags. Inside these bags were five parcels wrapped in transparent plastic, containing cannabis.

Upon the discovery, the driver of the vehicle was promptly cautioned and taken into custody. The seized parcels were weighed, totaling 25,401 kilograms (56 lbs) of narcotics. Both the drugs and the vehicle were marked, sealed, and lodged at the Blairmont Police Station.

The teacher remains in custody as investigations continue into the matter.

GuyExpo 2024 launched, to feature some 250 booths

The expo will feature international and service pavilions, a main auditorium suited for manufacturers, designated spaces for agro-processors, a food court, and a fun games section for children.

After a six-year hiatus, the event resumed last year and will highlight both emerging and established businesses.

“What makes it unique is that all Guyanese come out, from all walks of life. It’s an event where you see full participation from all of Guyana,” Minister Walrond told the News Room.

The inaugural GuyExpo was held in 1995.

CPL 2024: Finally a win for Falcons as Knight Riders stumble in tight finish

Player-of-the-Match Allen added vital wickets to go with his handy hitting. A match-turning 10^th over saw him prise out Shaqkere Parris lbw for 31 and then pull off a lighting-reflex return catch to dismiss Nicholas Pooran with his very next ball.

The Knight Riders managed to take the game into the final over and had the chance to make it two wins in two games, with an attainable 14 runs needed off the final six deliveries.

Roshon Primus held his nerve for the Falcons after getting flicked for four through midwicket by Akeal Hosein off the first ball of the final over.

Terrance Hinds chopped Primus onto his stumps and Hosein was run out off the penultimate delivery of the match despite Sam Billings’ fumble with the gloves when breaking the stumps.

A nail-biting match thus game down to the last ball, Waqar Salamkheil needing to strike a six to tie the game and send it to a Super Over. It wasn’t to be.

Salamkheil failed to make contact with an attempted lap, the Falcons players swooping around Primus to celebrate an inaugural win.

“We were searching for that win and grateful we got it tonight,” said Fabian Allen in the moments after the Falcons six run victory.

“We were searching for 180, but 170-odd was good on this wicket, we defended well. We’re grateful for the crowd, they supported us right through.”

Falcons captain Chris Green was mightily pleased with his side’s ability to show character and defend their total.

“We have had a tough time here at home, we were not at our best in the last couple of games. I’m really happy for the fans and for my team. We still have to carry on playing this positive, aggressive brand of cricket. I think we showed ourselves what we can do. Nothing needs to change.” (CPL)

Guyana falls to clinical Suriname in Concacaf Nations League opener

Guyana’s Golden Jaguars suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Suriname in their opening League A match of the Concacaf Nations League at the National Track and Field Facility, West Coast Demerara, on Thursday afternoon.

Despite showing glimpses of promise, defensive errors and missed opportunities cost Guyana the match.

Suriname took an early lead through Djevencio van der Kust, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to find the back of the net in the 18^th.

With assistance from Virgil Misidjan, van der Kust unleashed a powerful left shot to the far post, putting the visitors ahead after a few tantalising efforts.

Guyana responded with a penalty goal from Omari Glasgow in the 43^rd. The penalty came when van der Kust brought down debutant Isaiah Jones.

The forward was on a run of individual brilliance when he switched from the left wing.

Up came a collective Glasgow, who extended his goal-scoring prowess with his 13th goal in the Nations League.

Substitute Osaze de Rosario had a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper inside the 12-yard box in the 54th but foiled a clear-cut opportunity to put the Jaguars ahead.

The opposite custodian, Quillan Roberts, was then under immense pressure with a fleet of daring offensive plays by the Surinamese.

As both sides rang the changes due to the high temperatures, which caused the match to be played with water breaks, substitute Jaden Montnor made something out of nothing after slipping through the defense and releasing a shot that, to much surprise, beat Roberts on the near post in the 66th.

Denzel Jubitana had a chance to seal it for Suriname in the 80^th but sent his solo effort wide.

However, three minutes later, Misidjan capitalized on Terrence Vancooten’s miscue to score his first goal for his country and seal a clinical performance by Guyana’s eastern neighbours.

Attention for the Golden Jaguars now turns to what should be a tougher opponent in Martinique. They depart on September 6 to face Martinique on Monday, September 9, at 16:00h.

The French-speaking unit, currently 11th in Concacaf rankings, battles the formidable Guatemala this evening from 22:00h.

Guyana is ranked 19th, while Suriname is 17th.

The League A groups are as follows:

Group A: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Suriname, and Guyana

Group B: Jamaica, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Nicaragua, and French Guiana

After Group Stage play in September and October, the first and second-place finishers of each group (four teams in total) will advance to the Quarterfinals, where they will join the four top-ranked League A teams (Mexico, United States, Panama, and Canada).

GuySuCo’s plans for sugar expansion focused on higher yields, better management

Cheong’s optimism aligns with the government’s commitment to revitalizing the sugar industry. President Dr. Irfaan Ali recently addressed the sector’s contraction, highlighting the significant reinvestments made since the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) returned to power in 2020. These efforts include rebuilding factories, clearing neglected cane lands, repairing dams and irrigation systems, and rehiring thousands of workers.

The administration is focused on rebuilding the industry following the previous government’s neglect and the controversial shutdown of some factories during the APNU+AFC’s term from 2015 to 2020.

With ongoing efforts such as increased mechanization in cane harvesting—now at 43%—and the expansion of new planting areas, President Ali is hopeful for a substantial rebound in the second half of this year and into the first crop of next year.
