Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn has said that should more forest people and others cooperate with drug fighting authorities, crime fighting could be enhanced. “The people who live in the forest can join up in this fight, because this is a fight for everyone,” he told reporters on the scene.

This is one of the many operations that was conducted over the past five months identifying illegal airstrips within the country and monitoring them. In this case, CANU believes it was lucky to strike at the right time; to seize the drugs before they were moved to another location.

Further, the team believes it was not just successful in seizing the drugs, but in detecting a new concealment method and gives an idea as to how big the network is.

The airstrip in question is illegal and said to be built to accommodate small aircrafts bringing several kilos of cocaine from outside of Guyana.

After samples are taken, the cocaine will be burnt.

CANU stated: “This seizure highlights the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) and the Government’s unwavering commitment to combating the narcotics trade in Guyana and collaborating with international partners. The Government of Guyana is making significant strides to equip the Joint Services with the necessary tools to combat drug trafficking and other illicit activities within the country. Recent investments in the GDF Coast Guard, Air Corps, and the Guyana Police to enhance monitoring of border regions underscore this dedication.”

It added: “This seizure also demonstrates the confidence that the Guyanese Government,
international agencies, and Joint Services have in CANU’s ability to fulfill its mandate.
CANU has been leading Guyana’s anti-narcotics efforts, resulting in previous seizures
of aircraft, and semi-submersibles, and the arrests of high-profile drug traffickers.”

Since coming to office in August 2020, the PPP/C government has injected heavily in furnishing the Joint Services with the necessary equipment.

The administration has also worked on developing partnerships with various international law enforcement agencies to ensure that Guyana does not become a haven for drug trafficking organisations who are bent on using Guyana as a trans-shipment point.

In this regard, significant investments have been made in Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and Air Corp, as well as the Guyana Police Force to safeguard the country’s border regions.

Importantly, this latest seizure is another example of the confidence the government and other international agencies have in CANU and the Joint Services of Guyana.

CANU has been at the forefront of Guyana’s anti-narcotics fight, which has resulted in past seizures of aircraft, semi-submersible vessels and arrests of high-profile drug traffickers.

Investigations into the Region One bust are ongoing.

After locking out the front row of the grid, McLaren looked on course for a one-two for half the race, with Piastri leading Norris after the Australian passed the Briton around the outside of the second chicane on the first lap.

Piastri’s fair but aggressive move ended with Norris slipping down to third in the first stint of the race as Leclerc was also able to slip by into second on the exit of the corner.

After trailing Piastri and Leclerc through the first stint, Norris made his pit stop first, in an attempt to undercut his way by Leclerc, who responded on the following lap.

Ferrari pitted on the next lap but McLaren’s strategy worked, vaulting Norris ahead of Leclerc, who initially complained on the radio.

McLaren pitted Piastri to ensure he kept the lead, following their team rules of being fair to both drivers, and the race now seemed to be a fight for victory between the two McLarens.

But Norris began to struggle with tyre wear, slowly dropping back to five seconds behind Piastri and had to make a second pit stop on lap 32, with 21 to go, Piastri following him six laps later to ensure he stayed ahead again.

That left Leclerc leading his team-mate Carlos Sainz by just over 10 seconds with Piastri chasing both down, and Ferrari decided to chance their arm.

They knew a one-stop option would be difficult, especially with such an early first stop, but both drivers pulled it off.

But, while Sainz dropped back to fourth behind the two McLarens, Leclerc’s lead was enough to keep him in front, to take one of the most stunning and unlikely victories of the year.

The crowd cheered him across the line as he took his second Monza victory for Ferrari, after his first in 2019.

“An incredible feeling,” Leclerc said. “I thought the first time would feel like this and the second time, if there was one, wouldn’t feel as special.

“But my god, the emotions in the final laps – just like 2019. Incredible.

“Monaco and Monza are the two races I want to win every year.

“Obviously I want to win as many as possible, and the world championship as soon as possible, but these are the two most special and I have managed to win them this year. It is so, so special.” (BBC)

Children were excited to meet with the police officers

It is aimed at supporting youth development and ensuring children in these communities are equipped and motivated to return to school for the new academic year.

According to the GPF, during the visit, Commissioner Hicken delivered inspiring messages to the children, encouraging them to stay committed to their education and reminding them that through dedication and hard work, they can achieve their dreams and aspirations.

“You are the future,” he told them, adding, “Staying in school and focusing on education is key to opening doors to endless opportunities.”

The back-to-school drive was met with great enthusiasm from the children, who were excited to meet the Commissioner and his team. The officers also assisted with the distribution of the school supplies.

Keacy Carty piled on the pain for the Patriots by striking 73 off just 35 balls in a visceral display of stroke making, the pair of batters leaving the opposition bewildered in the face of boundaries struck all-round the relatively short sided ground in Basseterre.

Fittingly, Carty hit the final ball of the innings for six to see the Knight Riders post a mammoth score of 250-4.

The Patriots cleared the 200-run mark themselves in posting 206-8 in what turned out to be the highest scoring match in CPL history between the sides, but in truth Andre Fletcher’s side never truly looked like they were going to haul in the target.

Just a few hours before the game began 41-year-old Dwayne Bravo announced that this year’s CPL would be his would be his last, the tournament’s all-time leading wicket-taker and five-time champion writing on Instagram that, “It’s been a great journey. This season will be my last one and I’m looking forward to a playing my final professional tournament in front of my Caribbean people… TKR is the place where everything started for me and will end with my team.”

Bravo went wicketless in his three overs, but along with Narine was one of only two Knight Riders bowlers to go at an economy rate of less than ten runs per over. Narine picked up 2-24 off his four overs and only went for three boundaries.

Earlier, Pooran looked like he’d reached three figures in style. Anrich Nortje sending down a full and wide delivery in the 18th over that the batter climbed into with relish.

It wasn’t to be, the sliced shot fell into the hands of Drakes on the boundary at deep point and the batter could not hide his disappointment.

Nevertheless, Pooran could comfort himself in the knowledge that his innings contributed to a resounding win for his side, saying afterwards that, “At the end of the day, I want to win matches and tournaments. I want to win the CPL and if I want to do that, I need to keep doing my job.”
