Gov’t closing Psychiatric Hospital; will provide ‘halfway homes’ for patients with nowhere to go

The previous National Mental Health Plan sought to reduce the hospital’s capacity by 50 per cent. Still, progress was slow due to many long-term patients lacking family support or having families unwilling to take them back.

The NPH accommodates 195 patients, 160 of whom are long-term residents. The hospital employs approximately 190 staff members, providing a one-to-one staff-to-patient ratio.

The new plan aims to implement a needs-based assessment to guide the redistribution of resources across regions. Inpatient and outpatient facilities will also be established to ensure that mental health services are accessible throughout the country.

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security will also collaborate with the health ministry to reintegrate long-term patients with their families. Families will be supported through disability and caregiver pensions, while those without family care will be housed in community rehabilitation facilities.

Community treatment teams will provide ongoing medical and mental health support for individuals in residential facilities, ensuring a more holistic and community-based approach to mental health care.

Meanwhile, the government is laying the groundwork for a more supportive environment for those struggling with mental health challenges and suicide through the implementation of the National Mental Health and Suicide Plan 2024-2030.

Cornwall wasn’t nearly done after dismissing Odean Smith then completing his five-wicket haul when Ryan John was brilliantly caught by Alick Athanaze in the deep.

The Patriots were in major danger of being dismissed for a total under 100, but Joshua da Silva and Anrich Nortje joined forces in a 39-run ninth partnership- the best of the innings- to avoid that ignominy.

But the Patriots were unable to take early wickets as de Kock and Kadeem Alleyne made it look easy with an opening stand of 57 in the Powerplay. After smashing a ton against Guyana Amazon Warriors, de Kock continued his rich form with sublime shots around the wicket.

He capitalised after being given out lbw to Kyle Mayers in the fifth over only for the decision to be overturned on review. The Patriots finally ended the stand when Alleyne on 25 was hit on the pads by Hasaranga, who surprisingly had been held back until the sixth over.

But de Kock rolled past another half-century as the Royals emphatically booked a playoff berth. (CPL)

While home team Malteenoes were shot out cheaply in both their innings in response GDF’s 276-8, they can take comfort in the performance of Guyana and West Indies female player Kaysia Schultz, who took a five-wicket haul.

Batting first, GDF were led by Jones, who walloped seven sixes and three fours in a blistering 68 off just 41 balls. His innings helped GDF to post quick runs, as they batted 44.5 overs.

Openers Rockael Reddy (51) and Leon Andrews (37) gave GDF a solid opening stand of 90 in 17.3 overs, and apart from Jones’ fifty, they got starts from Kemar Ferreira (32), Jamal Chisholm (27*) and  Hakeem David (27).

Left-arm spinner Schultz was the pick of the bowlers with 5-62 off 14.5 overs, bowling 61 dot deliveries.

Malteenoes, in reply, folded for 135 all out from 39.3 overs in their first turn at the crease with Jones returning figures of 5-48 off 13 overs. Keith Simpson took 2-43.

Shemroy Barrington topscored with 54 off 52 (6x4s, 2x6s) and Tretlon Liverpool made 27 off 65 (1×4).

GDF enforced the follow-on and again dismissed Malteenoes cheaply, this time for 122 from 40.1 overs to complete the one-sided contest.

Simpson led the way with the ball, taking 4-18 off 11.1 overs, while Andrews bagged 3-40 off 13 overs.

Openers Adrian Hinds (40) and Collis Rimple (25) put on 56 for the first wicket, but once they were separated, Malteenoes’ innings subsided.

Persaud, also called Vishal, was shot after a robbery unfolded at a Canal No. 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD) wedding house on New Year’s Day.

Singh is believed to be part of a trio involved in the robbery and murder then.

Police Headquarters reported that Singh was caught during a raid exercise conducted in several areas in Regional Division 4A.

Meanwhile, Police also said other wanted persons were caught.

Rondell Vanrossum, a 45-year-old resident of Norton Street, Lodge, was also arrested with an unlicensed Glock 9MM pistol and ten rounds of 9MM ammunition.

Julian Aaron, a 51-year-old resident of East Ruimveldt, was arrested with a quantity of ammunition, while Lorenzo Heywood, a 20-year-old resident of Coldingen, ECD, who is Wanted by the Police for several armed robberies, was arrested.
