Many countries, particularly those within the 15-member regional bloc known as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), stepped up to help countries in need but Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell singled out Guyana’s support during his visit to the South American nation this week.

“Guyana has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

“You are the only CARIOCM country with troops still stationed in Grenada and (their stay has been) extended by a further two weeks to help with the continuing building and recovery effort.

“There is no reason for you to do this other than the love, the humility and the solidarity for the people of Grenada, Carricou and Petit Martinique,” Prime Minister Mitchell said on Wednesday night at a business dinner in Guyana’s capital city, Georgetown.

Just after the hurricane hit Caribbean islands, Guyana sprang into action. Relief supplies were dispatched and later, in Grenada, soldiers were sent to help with rebuilding efforts.

Prime Minister Mitchell said the efforts of the soldiers have made a “remarkable difference” in Grenada’s abilit to “stand up” and rebuild.

So he expressed heartfel gratitude to the government and people of Guyana.

The star of the Falcons innings though was 17-year-old Jewel Andrew, who showed maturity beyond his years and an eye-catching talent by striking 50 off just 30 balls to post a challenging target of 163-4 for the Patriots to chase.

An ebb and flow of runs and wickets followed as a dramatic match headed down to the final over and then the final delivery. Nortje held his nerve to get the single needed off Roshon Primus to give the Patriots a last gasp win, they equal their win tally of last year’s tournament after just one game.

Kyle Mayers was awarded Player-of-the-Match for a crucial 39 off 24 balls from number three, but when he was dismissed by Mohammad Amir in the 16^th over it left the Patriots on 133-6 and with plenty still to do.

Despite wickets falling steadily, including two in the final over, the Patriots lower order managed to get over the line and chalk up a win to kick off their campaign.

“I’m happy we won this game,” Patriots captain Andre Fletcher reflected in the moments after victory. “I want us to be positive but at the same time, we have to be smart about it. Enjoy the cricket as much as possible, enjoy each other’s success and stick together as a team. Once we do that, we have the personnel to do well.”

The 2024 CPL is up and running and the opening match well and truly whetted the appetite for the next five weeks of action. (CPL)

Defending champions Essequibo made a riveting start to their title defence, defeating Demerara in the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board Under-13 Inter-County 40-over competition on Thursday.

Playing in familiar conditions at the Affiance ground in Essequibo, the home side dismissed Demerara for 84 in 29.1 overs. Essequibo then charged to victory at 85-3 from 19.3 overs in the 12-player per side contest.

The Essequibians were led to victory by Joseph Bholo, who stroked a top score of 24 and received support from Arif Singh (18*) and opener Ravid Fredericks (17).

Wicketkeeper Bholo had earlier played a crucial role in the field, picking up three dismissals behind the stumps and effecting a run out.

An excellent bowling performance from Essequibo kept Demerara in check, with Gishwar Tillack (2-2), Usain Fredericks (2-7), Tyrese Stephney (2-16) and Marcus Thomas (2-18) among the wickets.

Jermaine Grovesnor (21) and Prosper Jacobus (12) added valuable runs for Demerara at the backend of the innings after skipper Lomar Seecharran (0) and fellow opener Nathan Bishop (0), Mickel Johnson (02), Makai Dowlin (06) and Wasim Ali (02) all fell cheaply as Demerara slipped to 26-5 early in the game.

Round Two of the tournament will take place on Friday (August 30) at the La Bonne Intention ground, East Coast Demerara, with Demerara facing Berbice from 10:30h.

The third and final round will be on Saturday (August 31) at the same venue with Berbice up against Essequibo.

Hayley Matthews emerged Player-of-the-Tournament with 147 runs and 11 wickets

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, the Royals bowlers made use of some good conditions with the early wickets of TKR captain Deandra Dottin for six and ace Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues for two.

With the loss of their two premier batters, the Knight Riders never recovered, eventually crawling to 93-8 from their 20 overs.

Shikha Pandey (28) and Jannilea Glasgow (24) were the main contributors with the bat as Aaliyah Alleyne bowled beautifully on her way to 4-21 from her four overs.

Captain Hayley Matthews took 2-13 from her four overs in support.

The Royals then made tough work of what should’ve been an easy chase, eventually reaching 94-6 with five overs to spare.

Chamari Athapaththu led the way with a patient 39* off 47 balls, including seven fours.

The Royals were, at one point, cruising at 66-1 in the 11^th over before losing five wickets for just 19 runs before Athapaththu and Afy Fletcher brought them over the line.

new Demerara River Crossing, the forthcoming Berbice River Bridge nor the new Mackenzie/ Wismar Bridge.

The President made the announcement as he commissioned the new Schoonord to Crane four-lane Highway in Region Three.

Though announcing that the new Berbice River Bridge will be toll-free, the President also said the government is seeking to acquire the existing Berbice Bridge. If acquired, it will also be toll-free.

The new Demerara River Crossing should be completed by 2025; while the new Mackenzie/ Wismar Bridge is slated for completion in 2026.

It was only recently announced that the government is building a new Berbice Bridge. And in an invited comment, President Ali, earlier this week, said the new Berbice Bridge will be a modern, high-span structure like the Demerara Bridge.
