Future Warriors Tapeball shifts to Anna Regina National Stadium on June 20-21

Following highly competitive and successful zone matches in Demerara and Berbice, the excitement of the Future Warriors Tapeball for Primary School officially shifts to the Essequibo Zone this weekend, June 20-21, at the Anna Regina National Stadium.

The tournament, powered by ExxonMobil Guyana,  has already crowned two regional champions. Demerara was won by West Ruimveldt, while Berbice was claimed by St. Therese Primary.

With their respective victories, the New Amsterdam-based St. Therese Primary joins Demerara champions West Ruimveldt in the highly anticipated national postseason lineup.

16 primary schools from the Essequibo region will battle it out in a knockout format starting Saturday morning.

The participating schools include: Riverstown Primary, Taymouth Manor Primary, Hampton Court Primary, Lima Sands Primary, Good Hope Primary, Sparta Primary, 8th of May Primary, CV Nunes Primary, Huis T’ Dieren Primary, Mainstay Lake Primary, Onderneeming Primary, Fisher Primary, Charity Primary, Friendship Primary, Capoey Primary, Suddie Primary

Reflecting on the tournament’s journey so far, Tournament Director John Ramsingh shared his enthusiasm ahead of the upcoming weekend.

“It has been great for the tournament so far. We have witnessed some exceptionally good cricket from these young players, and now we are in the final leg of the regional qualifiers.

We expect the energy and talent in Essequibo to match, if not exceed, what we have seen across Demerara and Berbice,” Ramsingh stated.

Beyond the silverware, the tournament highlights an institutional focus on modern cricket metrics.

The top four schools from each zone receive comprehensive equipment bags, agility kits, and electronic scoring tablets.

The integration of tablets is designed to introduce young players to the digital mechanics of online match scoring, bridging the gap between recreational play and data analysis.

To ensure lasting development, all 16 participating schools also leave with baseline fitness equipment.

The regional champions crowned this weekend will progress to the Champion of Champions tournament later this year, scheduled for August or September.

The stakes remain incredibly high, as the ultimate winner of that national phase will earn a novelty fixture against the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Admission to the Anna Regina National Stadium is entirely free, and members of the public are encouraged to come out and support the future stars of Guyanese cricket.

‘Need for Speed’ Karting Championship takes centre stage on Saturday

All roads lead to Thomas Lands on Saturday as Guyana’s packed month of motorsport shifts into standard overdrive.

The Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) is the venue for the opening round of the Jumbo Jet events Need for Speed Karting Championship, a two-day extravaganza promising intense wheel-to-wheel drama.

The action sparks to life on Friday evening with the crucial qualifying session from 17:00h.

Drivers across 11 competitive classes—ranging from the raw potential of the Briggs Cadets and SuperMoto Juniors to the elite IAME X30 and seasoned Briggs Veterans—will battle the clock to secure vital track position.

    Saturday’s Schedule of Play

Saturday is where the talking stops and the racing begins.

The pit lanes burst into life early, leading up to a relentless schedule of back-to-back heats.

    • 08:00h – Pits open & scrutineering
    • 08:45h – Mandatory drivers’ briefing
    • 09:00h – National Anthem & final grid staging
    • 09:15h – RACE START (Opening heat: Honda GX200)

Following the morning opener, races will come thick and fast at 15-minute intervals.

A brief lunchtime respite at midday will offer a tactical breather before Heat Two commences. With points at a premium and grid positions for the finals on the line, there will be absolutely zero margin for error.

The business end of the weekend begins at 15:50h after a short afternoon break.

Expect elbows-out racing as the finals take over the G5S Speedway. Every class will look to crown its round-one heroes, concluding with the podium presentations at 18:50h to honour the top three finishers.

Organisers are prepared for a bumper crowd, with a stacked grid featuring a potent mix of veteran racers and rising young talent.

While promoters have noted that the schedule remains subject to change depending on weather and track safety, the forecast is clear: high-octane entertainment. (Modified Press release)

  • FIFA World Cup 2026: Super sub Manzambi sends Swiss soaring

FIFA World Cup 2026: Super sub Manzambi sends Swiss soaring

Switzerland moved to the top of Group B after a Johan Manzambi-inspired victory over ten-man Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Freiburg star struck twice in a goal-laden second half as the Swiss followed up their opening-match draw against Qatar with an impressive and ultimately deserved victory.

After a forgettable first period, the match burst into life after the interval when Manzambi came off the bench to crash home an unstoppable first-time strike.

Fellow substitute Ruben Vargas doubled their advantage with a smart right-footed finish before setting up Manzambi to settle the outcome and put himself in the adidas Golden Boot picture.

The Bosnians, who had lost Tarik Muharemovic to a red card for a professional foul on Breel Embolo, pulled a goal back in stoppage time with a ferocious Ermin Mahmic strike.

There was no hope of a comeback, though, and Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka restored their three-goal cushion as time ticked down with a coolly dispatched penalty. (FIFA)

  • Women’s T20 World Cup: Taylor, spinners help West Indies overcome Scotland threat

Women’s T20 World Cup: Taylor, spinners help West Indies overcome Scotland threat

Stafanie Taylor navigated a huge scare at the hands of Scotland as West Indies scrapped their way to a second win of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

Taylor, playing her first match of the tournament, injected much-needed impetus to the West Indies’ innings with a boundary-laden 47 not out off just 19 deliveries striking at 247.36 after West Indies had slumped to 85 for 5 in the 15th over of the match.

A spirited half-century by just-turned 21-year-old opener Darcey Carter while battling a leg injury took Scotland close to victory in the face of a nervy performance with the ball and in the field from West Indies.

She shared half-century partnerships with Katherine Fraser and Ailsa Lister, but Hayley Matthews’ 3 for 19 in four overs, which included 13 dot balls, gave her side just enough hope to hold onto and Aaliyah Alleyne’s three wickets in the 19th over stifled Scotland just as they threatened to take the match away once more.

Fraser had been outstanding for Scotland with 2 for 34, a spectacular catch on the boundary’s edge to remove opener Qiana Joseph and the sharp run-out of Shemaine Campbelle, West Indies’ star in their nail-biting victory over New Zealand on Saturday.

West Indies became bogged down by a disciplined Scotland bowling attack complemented by excellent fielding all round. But, led by Taylor, they scored 69 runs in the last six overs to set Scotland a sizeable target – one the qualifiers came far closer to reaching than their opponents would have liked. • Stakeholder summit points to new era of CARICOM-CWI collaboration

Stakeholder summit points to new era of CARICOM-CWI collaboration

In what is being viewed as a significant pivot toward a more unified approach to governance, Cricket West Indies (CWI) president Dr Kishore Shallow has lauded Guyana’s President, Dr Irfaan Ali, for fostering an inclusive environment during the 22nd meeting of the CARICOM Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee (PMSC) on Cricket.

The virtual session, convened on Wednesday, moved away from traditional administrative silos, bringing together regional political leaders, CWI executives, corporate stakeholders, and a heavyweight contingent of past and present players.

Among those on the call were Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne, CWI vice-president Azim Bassarath, and CEO Chris Dehring.

Crucially, the cricketing fraternity was handed a direct seat at the table, represented by icons Sir Clive Lloyd, Courtney Walsh, and Ramnaresh Sarwan, alongside current West Indies women’s captain Hayley Matthews, ensuring the modern player’s perspective was integrated into high-level policy discussions.

“Bringing together government, the cricket community and the business sector around the same table speaks to a genuine recognition that the development of our game requires the input of all stakeholders,” Shallow said following the conclusion of the meeting.

“This kind of engagement is both timely and welcomed.”

The agenda focused heavily on systemic overhauls, stretching from grassroots community pipelines to the professional tier, encompassing both the men’s and women’s tracks.

To address long-standing regional facility deficits, the sub-committee deliberated on establishing a joint CARICOM-CWI Infrastructure Development and Utilisation Sub-Committee.

The proposed body is tasked with providing strategic oversight for the planning, maintenance, and modernisation of cricket and multi-purpose facilities across the archipelago.

While the terms of reference are still being finalised, the committee is expected to be formally ratified shortly.

Commercial viability and private-sector integration also took centre stage.

The sub-committee agreed to organise a Regional Cricket Business Forum, a targeted initiative designed to court Caribbean corporate investment and foster deeper public-private partnerships. (Modified CWI Press Release)

  • GSL 2026: Van Lange replaces Jangoo in Amazon Warriors squad

GSL 2026: Van Lange replaces Jangoo in Amazon Warriors squad

Guyana Amazon Warriors have drafted in rising talent Jonathan Van Lange for the upcoming ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).

The all-rounder replaces wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo, who has been withdrawn following his maiden call-up to the West Indies Test squad.

The 19-year-old all-rounder’s stock has risen sharply over the last few months. Van Lange made a stellar transition to senior cricket in May, smashing a century on his First-Class debut for Guyana Harpy Eagles against the West Indies Academy.

He backed that up with a crucial, even fifty against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the West Indies Four-Day Championship final, proving his big-match temperament.

Known for his hard-hitting ability in the middle order and his lively medium pace, Van Lange’s utility has made him a hot commodity in the regional circuit.

The GSL call-up caps off a breakout year for the teenager, who has also been locked into the Amazon Warriors’ squad for the subsequent Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign running through August and September.

The reigning champions retain a formidable core despite Jangoo’s absence, boasting a heavy arsenal of international T20 firepower, including Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Glenn Phillips, and the ageless Imran Tahir.

The five-team Global Super League, scheduled from July 23 to August 1 on Guyanese soil, features a mini-World Cup flavour.

The Amazon Warriors will test their mettle against Pakistan’s Lahore Qalandars, UAE’s Desert Vipers, Australia’s Perth Scorchers XI, and Major League Cricket’s San Francisco Unicorns.

Guyana Amazon Warriors Squad: Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Rovman Powell, Gudakesh Motie, Glenn Phillips, Imran Tahir, Dwaine Pretorius, Mohammad Nabi, Muhammad Haris, Johnson Charles, Quentin Sampson, Keemo Paul, Matthew Forde, Jonathan Van Lange.

  • Rameez Mohamed ready to unleash new KTM X-Bow at Guyana Grand Prix

Rameez Mohamed ready to unleash new KTM X-Bow at Guyana Grand Prix

With the highly anticipated GT Challenge de Las Americas just weeks away, Guyana’s finest racing drivers are sharpening their teeth for a high-stakes, wheel-to-wheel showdown against Latin America’s elite.

At the centre of the pre-race buzz is former Starlet Cup Champion Rameez Mohamed.

A household name in Guyanese motorsport, Mohamed is preparing to ditch his familiar comfort zone for a thrilling debut in a machine that screams intent: a striking white KTM X-Bow.

Sponsored by Prem’s Electrical and BM Soat, the KTM represents a monumental step up from the Honda Civic (GP2) and Toyota Starlet (GP3) machinery that Mohamed has traditionally wrestled around the apexes.

It’s a challenge the former champion is embracing with open arms.

“The car has been ready for some time, but we were just fine-tuning it to my specifications,” Mohamed revealed in an official Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) media release.

“It’s definitely an entirely different machine compared to the ones I’m used to… but it presents a challenge that I am willing to take on.”

The precise competitive class for the radical, lightweight KTM within the GT Challenge framework remains a question mark, but Mohamed’s objective is crystal clear: “We are going to be out there 100% representing Guyana.”

Getting a radically different race car up to optimum speed requires track time—something that is currently at a premium.

Final track modifications at the South Dakota Circuit mean Mohamed’s team is playing a waiting game to resume their rigorous testing programme.

    Rameez Mohamed

“The car is still new to me in some cases,” Mohamed admitted. “We are awaiting the completion of the works at the South Dakota Circuit before we can resume our testing. The car will do well in the series, and we are going to go all out.”

Should the testing gods smile upon his garage, Mohamed’s weekend could become incredibly busy.

He is also scrambling to ready his revered Renault Megane for Group 4 local honours, alongside his trusted Group 2 Honda Civic.

“We had some work to do on the Renault from the last event… Once we do, then we are also going to be running that,” he added, emphasising that track availability will ultimately dictate his final multi-class onslaught.

With the Dakota 100 and a scheduled track day looming on June 28, fans are eager to see if the KTM will make an early, surprise appearance.

True to the psychological warfare of top-tier motorsport, Mohamed is keeping his cards close to his chest.

“I guess we will have to wait and see!” he teased. “I’m not letting the cat out of the bag, but spectators can turn up, and maybe they will be surprised.” (PRESS RELEASE)
