The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) expressed its condolences to the family and friends of former youth cricketer Mark Anthony Rigby, who passed away earlier this month.

Rigby, born in March 1961, represented Guyana in youth cricket during the 1970s. He was also a dedicated member of the Police Sports Club for many years.

The GCB noted Rigby’s son, Mark Rigby Jr., who played as a U15 all-rounder in the 2000s, following in his father’s cricketing footsteps. The report also mentions Rigby’s close friendship with former West Indies player Gus Logie.

“The GCB, along with the entire cricket fraternity, extends its deepest sympathies to Mark Rigby’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the board stated.

Almost a month after he allegedly assaulted two Police officers, a 35-year-old taxi driver was on Friday read four charges and was granted bail amounting to $90,000,

Jitendra Baljodah, a resident of Onderneeming Sand Pit, Essequibo Coast appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.

He was charged for assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, disorderly behavior and using threatening language.

Baljodah denied all of the charges.

He was granted $35,000 bail each on the charges of assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest.

He was placed on $10,000 bail each on the other two charges.

The offences were committed on June 26 June at Onderneeming Sand Pit, Essequibo Coast on two Police ranks.

The case was adjourned to August 9 for disclosure of statements.

The highly anticipated PanJam 2024 is set to dazzle attendees with its vibrant theme, “PanJam: World of Colours.” The event, which has grown to be Guyana’s premier steel pan concert, will take place on Saturday, July 27th at the expansive Parc Rayne, a new venue chosen to accommodate the growing number of patrons.

Founded six years ago by renowned Guyanese pannist Reon Miller while he was a law student, PanJam began as a fundraiser to cover his tuition fees. Today, it stands as a cultural phenomenon, celebrating the rich sounds of the Caribbean and attracting people from all walks of life.

This year’s theme, “World of Colours,” promises a visually stunning experience as attendees are encouraged to dress in bright, colourful attire, embodying the vibrancy and diversity of the Caribbean culture. The move to Parc Rayne marks a significant milestone in PanJam’s journey, reflecting its ever-increasing popularity and the need for a larger venue to accommodate its growing fanbase.

PanJam 2024 boasts an impressive lineup of both local and international artists. Making their debut performances at PanJam are the talented Jackie Jaxx and cKush. The event will also feature special performances by international guest, Amjad Ali and regional sensation, Joshua Regrello. Returning to the PanJam stage are beloved seasoned performers Carlvin Burnett, Cassie Adams, Roy Stewart, and Reon Miller, among many others.

One of the most eagerly anticipated segments of the evening is the epic clash between two of Guyana’s most prestigious steel bands – the Guyana Police Force Steel Orchestra and Parkside Steel Orchestra. These bands will engage in a thrilling tune-for-tune battle, promising to end the night on a high note.

Commenting on whether the bill will be presented before the parliamentary recess in August, Dr Jagdeo said, “It may be tough to pass it because we may not have the requisite period for notice, but I think we have enough time to table it. We don’t want to also rush it through the Parliament.”

He was at the time updating reporters at a press conference at Freedom House on Thursday.

He added that the government is considering restricting comments on the draft legislation to include only locals.

“We may we may solicit. I’m not sure that we will open this one up for comments, especially from the oil and gas companies, because they don’t want legislation of this nature. Maybe…open it only for comments from the locals,” he explained.

The legislation will detail the state’s responsibilities and those accountable in the event of an oil spill, whether it be companies operating in the sector or a shipping company.

The government has been adamant that while there are already several measures in place to address any potential oil spill, it is necessary to implement more comprehensive legislation that provides greater scope in liability.

Currently, ExxonMobil and its coventurers operating in the Stabroek Block have agreed to a US$2 billion parent company guarantee for oil spills. They have also agreed to a US$600 million insurance package.

Added to this, the tenets of the Environmental Protection Act emphasise ‘strict liability’, which means that the permit holder is fully responsible and fully liable for any pollution that their activities and this does not have to be proven. (DPI)
