“The bailiffs, accompanied by police, came yesterday, and seven homes were demolished, which affected about 30 persons, including children. The key thing here is to ensure that the children and the adults are being taken care of. We are working to make sure that they can have temporary shelter arrangements,” he told the Department of Public Information (DPI).

McCoy added that the government will continue working to secure permanent housing for the squatters.

Bringing greater context to the issue, McCoy recalled that in 2020 the government, recognising that many of these squatters have been residing in the area for decades, met with them, and sought to provide some relief.

A list of residents was compiled and persons were encouraged to apply for house lots at the Ministry of Housing and Water.

“Those who occupied lands were offered lands in 2021, and we have to look at the list and be able to work with the families here to move into their own homes,”McCoy said.

However, he highlighted that the issue is further complicated by new squatters who were not included on the original list compiled during the government’s visit.

“Some people constructed homes, moved from the area, and are renting to others. The situation is as well, people have moved in here subsequent to that compilation of the families that existed at the time we were here. So people were added to the squatting situation, so it complicated the issue,” he explained. (DPI)

“As a government, we are not in any way, shape or form subscribing to the squatting on private property, but the reality is that their situation drove them to do what they did and we have to find a way to help the families get into a place that they can at least minimally call their own,” the minister added.

A team of 13 firefighters, two tenders and a water carrier, carrying over 6000 liters of water was dispatched to the scene.

While, they managed to extinguish the blaze, the building and its contents were destroyed, the Fire Service said.

Due to the heat, the wall of a neighbouring building owned and occupied by Ruby Francis, 39 and her family of eight was affected.

Upon investigating, the Fire Service said it was revealed that a “slack” connection of illegal wiring, which resulted in arcing and sparking, igniting nearby combustible materials and caused the fire.

The GFS continues to warn citizens to desist from using illegal connections for electricity.

“These connections present a serious risk to both life and property since they could cause fires or electrocutions,” the Fire Service said in a statement.

Guyana’s doubles pairs were also impressed. Verwey and Avery Arjoon secured gold in the Mixed Doubles category, while the boys’ duo of Alphonso Jr. and Mohryan Baksh collected silver.

Lowe and Sumner displayed strong teamwork, finishing joint third in the girls’ doubles.

Individually, Guyana returned home with a strong showing of nine medals, including gold for Verwey (U-19) and Arjoon (U-15).

Guyana will host the Senior CASA Championships from August 17-25.

The next edition of the Junior CASA is expected to take place in Bermuda or the Cayman Islands.

“We aim to foster investment in community cricket from both private and public sectors,” Ramsingh explained.

“This benefits players while providing fans with high-quality entertainment. While we’re still working on the ideal player reward structure, we’re on the right track. We believe this tournament has the potential to become a major regional event, with international aspirations in the future.”

The final list of participating players will be revealed after July 28.

The winner’s purse has been increased to G$1.5 million, with G$500,000 for the runner-up and G$250,000 for each losing semifinalist.

Individual awards will be given for Player of the Final, Most Wickets, Most Runs, and Most Valuable Player.

Star Rentals has committed to the first-place prize, while the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport will support the tournament for the next two years.

The Ministry of Housing and Water, along with Demerara Mutual, have signed as well.
