    What do South Africa, England and West Indies need to make the semis?

    With two games left in Group 2 of the T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight stage, it’s largely a three-way fight for the semi-final spots.

    USA aren’t completely out of it, but they will need huge wins to be in the hunt.

    Here’s a look at the qualification scenarios based on the result combinations in the two remaining matches: England vs USA, and West Indies vs South Africa.

    If England and West Indies win

    That will leave three teams – England, West Indies and South Africa – on four points each. West Indies’ huge win against USA means they will finish with a higher net run rate than South Africa if they beat them by any margin on Sunday night.

    So West Indies will qualify for sure with a win, regardless of the England-USA result.

    For England to go past South Africa’s NRR, the sum of margins of the two results will have to be 10 runs (assuming first-innings totals of 160).

    That means, if England win by 10 runs, they will go ahead on run rate even if South Africa lose in the Super Over.

    If the margin of result is under 10, South Africa will stay ahead and qualify with four points.

    If USA and South Africa win

    South Africa will top the table with six points, while the other three teams will finish on two points each. If England lose in the Super Over chasing 160, West Indies will have to lose by 43 or more runs for their NRR to drop below that of England.

    If England lose by a bigger margin, West Indies will have more leeway, which means in such a scenario South Africa and West Indies are the likely semi-finalists.

    USA’s poor run rate means they’ll need two huge results to stand any chance of finishing in the top two: they will first need to beat England by at least 56 runs (assuming a total of 160) to go past them on NRR, and then hope that West Indies lose by at least 91 runs for their run rate to drop below USA’s.

    If USA and West Indies win

    In this case, West Indies and South Africa will qualify with four points, while England and USA will finish on two.

    If England and South Africa win

    South Africa, with six points, and England, with four, will be the semi-finalists. (ESPNcricinfo)

    Oubli ou omission volontaire…, Garry Conille n’évoque jamais la date du 7 février 2026

    Depuis son arrivée dans le pays, 1er juin 2024, Garry Conille multiplie rencontres, paroles et… actions. Oui, le Premier ministre a beaucoup marché, beaucoup parlé, serré beaucoup de mains… Il est en croisade ! Garry Conille a, certes, un porte-parole, mais depuis son installation, 12 juin 2024, c’est lui-même qui porte sa parole. Au regard de la Communication politique, le Premier ministre veut, en se faisant quasi quotidiennement entendre, mieux encore ‘’écouter’’, aux premières heures de sa Gouvernance, incarner le Pouvoir. Sur ce point, Garry Conille, en occupant l’espace public politique comme le seul coq de la basse-cour, n’est pas du tout mal conseillé. Aujourd’hui, il y a le Dr. Conille et le CPT. C’est un fait !

    Parlant de bon conseil, un fait majeur attire l’attention : le silence du Premier ministre sur la date du 7 février 2026, retenue dans l’Accord politique du 3 avril 2024 et dans le Décret portant création du Conseil présidentiel de transition, comme le jour J de la passation du pouvoir à des élus (Président, députés, sénateurs, maires…). Est-il dans l’oubli ou dans le refus de répéter ad nauseam ce que la nation sait déjà ? Le doute est permis. S’agit-il d’une omission volontairement entretenue à travers ses multiples discours officiels ou prises de parole impromptues ? Possible. Ou plutôt, évidemment. En guise de début de preuve, l’on soulignera que lors de sa visite au Conseil électoral provisoire (CEP), mardi 18 juin 2024, Garry Conille était dans le parfait contexte pour parler non seulement d’élections mais aussi du fait corrélé, à savoir la passation du pouvoir. Pour peu que le médecin de 58 ans soit véritablement dans le déni, il conviendrait de reconnaitre qu’il est tout de même plus lucide que les membres du Conseil présidentiel de transition, trop pressés ou trop contents de prendre le pouvoir à tout prix ou à l’aveugle ; allant jusqu’à ne pas mesurer l’étendue de la tâche abyssale à accomplir pour arriver à l’organisation d’élections générales dans cette Haïti-là. Pour donner une simple idée de la teneur du travail politico-social à entreprendre, disons qu’à coté du comportement électoral des Haïtiens qui, sans nul doute, s’est déjà modifié dans le mauvais sens de la désaffection démocratique (étant donné la non tenue de scrutins depuis près d’une décennie), l’insécurité généralisée n’est peut-être que l’arbre qui cache la forêt. Autrement dit, il pourrait prendre un temps considérablement long pour (ré)apprendre aux gens le « Sens du vote » et sa nécessité pour la démocratie qui ne rime pas à l’abstentionnisme, indice de dépolitisation ou conséquence, dirait-on, d’une faible insertion sociale.
    Visiblement habitué aux diagnostics médicaux dans toute leur complexité, Garry Conille a peut-être mieux sondé l’âme du pays malade que les Conseillers-présidents. Ici, la « compétence technique » qu’invoquait l’Ambassade américaine semble avoir pris de l’ascendant sur le politique.

    Priorité : mise en marche de l’Etat

    Larvatus prodeo. Comme le philosophe, Garry Conille avance masqué. « On » dit que sa principale mission consiste à réaliser au plus vite les élections, alors que lui pose des actes calculés allant dans le sens de la restauration, sinon du redressement de la superstructure. A preuve, les mesures draconiennes par lui récemment annoncées comme : Tolérance zéro contre la corruption, fin de la fameuse pratique d’accumulation de « chèques zombies », non-autorisation de nomination par les Ministres…, laissent entrevoir déjà une très longue marche s’apparentant à la traversée du désert, qui ne saurait aucunement durer vingt-deux (22) mois ou deux (2) ans. A État failli, élections faillies. L’ancien technocrate de l’ONU le sait bien, ses intelligentes avancées effectuées même dans une quasi timidité politique le prouve. D’ailleurs, le Chef du gouvernement a bien promis qu’il réussira. Pour que cette réussite se cristallise au moins dans l’imaginaire collectif avant de s’inscrire dans le réel, Garry Conille semble penser et agir à l’intersection de deux axes : le premier, entre un Présent sombre à maîtriser et un Avenir incertain à transformer ; le second, entre certaines valeurs immuables de la démocratie (comme l’Etat fort) et une certaine aspiration du peuple qui souhaite en finir avec la corruption et ses promoteurs. Au regard de la politique et ses multiples corollaires, le « jeu » dans lequel le quinquagénaire s’engage froidement est aussi intéressant que dangereux. De là, l’on comprend mieux son refus, sa prudence ou son omission.

    Pour le compte du match inaugural de la 47e édition de la Copa America, l’équipe d’Argentine de football s’est imposée le jeudi 20 juin 2021 face au Canada par deux buts à zéro. Au stade Mercedes-Benz Stadium d’Atlanta, Julian Alvarez et Lautaro Martinez (butteurs), les champions en titre repartent avec les trois points.

    Les Argentins démarrent le tournoi continental du bon pied. Pour le coup d’envoi de la Copa America 2024, l’Argentine a affronté le Canada. Malgré la large domination des Argentins, les deux équipes se sont quittées dos à dos en première période.

    De retour des vestiaires, le prodige argentin du Manchester City, Julian Alvarez a déclenché les hostilités. Après un choc entre le gardien canadien et le milieu de terrain argentin Mac Allister, Alvarez a mis la balle au fond du filet à la 49e minute de jeu.

    Messi a raté au moins deux occasions de buts en deuxième période mais a donné une belle offrande à Lautaro Martinez à la 88e minute pour inscrire le but du break.

    L’Argentine bat le Canada sur le score de deux buts à zéro et repart avec les trois points dans cette phase de poule.
    Pour rappel le match Canada vs Argentine a été le match le plus regardé de l’année 2024 avec 8,3 millions de vues dans le monde.

    Messi devient le joueur le plus capé dans cette compétition avec sa 35e apparition en Copa America. L’Argentine pourra-t-elle faire le back to back en remportant ce trophée en juillet prochain ?

    PNCR ‘elders’ to probe sexual assault, gun threats against Norton

    party leader Aubrey Norton at the behest of the women’s arm of the party.

    Volda Lawrence, a member of the PNCR’s women’s arm, said the allegations of sexual assault and gun threats raised by party stalwart Vanessa Kissoon are being treated seriously but since Kissoon is party of the women’s arm, the matter has been referred to the elders.

    “I think this sends a strong message to women in the party and supporters that we, the women in the women’s arm, are willing to act on any allegations,” Lawrence said at a PNCR press conference on Friday afternoon.

    Kissoon had said that Norton, who is also the Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton once threatened to sexually assault and shoot her.

    Mr Norton has denied the accusation and says it is part of efforts by one of his competitors to thwart his leadership campaign. Norton is looking to retain the leadership of the PNC when its congress is held next week.

    Meanwhile, party elder Hamilton Green, who joined Lawrence and other PNCR members at the press conference, promised that a swift and impartial investigation will be done to bring any wrongdoer to justice.

    He also suggested that party resources may be needed to mobilise a polygraph test, which is better known as a lie-detector test.

    Green, however, said the timing of the accusations raise concerns about persons’ ulterior motives.

    “We need to be very careful; the timing of this matter is of some significance and one ought to ensure that we do not get into anything that will destabilise the party,” Green said.

    Teachers back to work: Gov’t, Union maintain positions for multi-year agreement

    agreed to end their strike and the government has committed to increasing salaries for the nation’s educators this year and to begin immediate negotiations for a multi-year agreement.

    The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) had wanted a multi-year package going back to 2019, but the government had said this would have had significant financial implications.

    In the agreement to end the strike, it was noted that “conciliation will commence forthwith to determine whether the timeframe proposed by the GTU, 2019 to 2023 or the MOE 2024 and onwards should form part of a new multi-year agreement.”

    The government had indicated its goal is to find a balanced solution that ensures fair compensation for our teachers and public sector workers while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

    “The Ministry of Education, and by extension, the Government, is very happy that we have come to an agreement, and that we can conclude this first step in the conciliation process… We look forward to the continued commitment of the GTU, as we are committed to bringing a conclusion to this matter so that at the end of it, we can have a Multi-Year Agreement that benefits all parties,” said Shannielle Hoosein-Outar, Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry.

    The government’s approach involves negotiating a multi-year agreement that considers current economic realities and future growth prospects. The multi-year agreement, strategy aims to provide steady and predictable salary adjustments, offering teachers a sense of security and stability in their earnings.

    As negotiations progress, both parties are expected to explore various options to reach a consensus that aligns with the country’s financial capacity and the welfare of public sector workers.

    In an agreement shared on Facebook by Education Minister Priya Manickchand, it was noted that teachers will end the ongoing strike and resume work within two working days.

    It was also agreed that there will be no victimisation, no loss of service, no transfer of teachers upon resumption and that teachers will return to their respective positions before the strike.

    “We are very happy that we were able to meet an agreement, and of course, given where we started and how we were going, it is good to see that the words that we constantly hear—trust and good faith—eventually came true in the end…,” said Dhaneshwar Deonarine, the Chief Labour Officer.

    President of the GTU, Mr. Mark Lyte, echoed similar sentiments.

    “GTU is committed to the process to ensure that we continue to negotiate in good faith, and at the end of it, we arrived at a position that would be beneficial to the children, the teachers and the nation as a whole… I hope that we can find common ground and see the bigger picture as we go forward,” he said.
