President Dr Irfaan Ali on Friday revealed that the Men on Mission (MOM) initiative is completing over 50 homes across the country. This announcement was made in response to ‘insensitive’ comments online comparing a house donated by a private sector member to one built by MOM.
“Recently, I saw some very insensitive comparisons on social media between a house donated by a private sector member and one built by Men on Mission. Right now, Men on Mission is completing over 50 homes,” President Ali said.
He stated that private sector members should be thankful for the system since their charitable work is often tax-deductible and part of giving back to society.
The President said MOM members are not just giving homes, “They are working with families, giving counseling, talking to them, understanding the circumstances because a house does not change circumstances alone.”
He further mentioned that MOM is working now to identify vulnerable families across the country and bring them into the food system by giving them shade houses.
“Under the Men on Mission programme we are not here to work in an unsustainable way, we are happy when every member of the private sector deliver and participate in social progammes in uplifting the lives of people.”
“When we are dealing with vulnerable families, we are also looking at how we can attach these sustainable measures to those families,” the President added.
A new Youth Empowerment and Mentorship Programme was launched under the Men on Mission (MOM) initiative, in collaboration with the private sector on Friday.
This programme aims to empower children between the ages 5-14 and young people to reach their fullest potential through regular one-on-one meetings, activities, workshops, and other learning opportunities across Guyana. The programme is structured to provide a foundation of support and guidance, with mentors carefully matched with mentees based on shared interests and goals.
The programme aspires to instill confidence, inspire ambition, and foster personal and professional development in young people. It also aims to equip them with positive habits, skills, and knowledge to navigate life’s challenges and seize opportunities in Guyana. At the official launch on Friday, it was revealed that mentorship groups will be established nationwide.

He mentioned that, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali had engaged private sector groups about contributing their time, energy, and resources to collaborate with MOM on this programme.

“Progress is measured in so many ways and success is measured in so many ways, but we must be patriotic, we must instill good family values in our young ones, in ourselves, in our communities, our homes, our churches, our masjids, our mandirs and this is an opportunity like many that would come for all of us to contribute differently,” he noted.
Persaud also addressed the need for an equipped workforce in Guyana. He expressed hope that this programme would empower Guyanese children and communities to think differently and contribute to the workforce, whether in jobs, entrepreneurial leadership, or other roles that will drive the country forward.

“This [Private Sector] group will bring together 40 children everyday from the 1st of June. They will have a nutritious meal, they will do their homework together, they will have access to the internet and Enetworks would allow that, they are putting internet facility, they will have access to computers and they will have compulsory counselling sessions, motivation sessions,” the Head-of-State said.
Many of the children come from single-parent, working mothers.
President Ali committed to being an active partner in the program, not only by cooking for the children but also by talking with them and being part of their lives.
“They will do things that will uplift them, things that will inspire them, things that give them a holistic approach and understanding of life,” the President stated and noted that the children will only graduate from the programme once they have completed their tertiary education.

On the 23rd May 2024, Police received legal advice indicating that there was insufficient evidence to charge Nigel Dharamlall in relation to the rape and sexual assault allegations made against him. The legal advise was based on the fact that there were several inconsistencies and discrepancies in the complainant’s story.
There were also statements from several independent witnesses that totally contradicted the complainant’s story. These included alibi witnesses who placed Nigel Dharamlall in a different Region on the date that the alleged incident occurred in September 2020.
Statements also disclosed that Nigel Dharamlall is not the owner of the house where the alleged incident occurred in January 2021 and he has no access to same.
These disclosures, among others, resulted in there being insufficient credible evidence and no realistic prospect of conviction in these matters.
In keeping with the Code for Prosecutors, a case which does not pass this evidential stage must not proceed, no matter how serious or sensitive it may be.
Rahul Dravid‘s successor could be an Indian by saying that he should have a “deep understanding” of the game’s structure in the country.
While Dravid has told the BCCI that he is not seeking a third stint, former Australian players like Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer said that they had turned down approaches for the high-profile position.

Meanwhile, Langer, who had remained noncommittal about applying for India coaching role after IPL clash between LSG and Mumbai Indians, said he would “never say never” but at the same time revealed receiving crucial advice from LSG captain KL Rahul.
“It would be an amazing job. I also know that it’s an all-encompassing role, and having done it for four years with the Australian team, honestly, it’s exhausting,” Langer said on BBC’s Stumped Podcast.
“And that’s the Australian job. You never say never. And the pressure of doing it in India… I was talking to KL Rahul and he said, ‘You know, if you think there’s pressure and politics in an IPL team, multiply that by a thousand, (that is) coaching India. That was a good bit of advice, I guess.
“It would be an awesome job, but not for me at the moment.”
