The police are investigating reports of arson that occurred on Saturday at Kingsley Village, West Coast Berbice.
Treasha James, a 19-year-old unemployed woman is the main suspect. She is said to be of unsound mind.
Police said the house belonged to Jean Harte who is the mother-in-law of James.
Around 10:00 hrs on Saturday, Harte was at home when James ran upstairs and told her that she had set fire to the mattress in the bedroom.
The woman ran downstairs, saw smoke, and immediately disconnected the gas bottle. Both of them then ran out of the building as the fire quickly spread in the bedroom.
The fire service was summoned and upon arrival extinguished the fire. However, by this time, the building was gutted.
James was later arrested. She is presently in custody at Weldaad Police Station.
Daneshwar Sawh also known as Derrick, a 50-year-old mechanic was found dead in his house at Riverview, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara on Saturday but police said the decomposing state of his body indicate that he died a day or two earlier.
According to reports, the man was an alcoholic and lived alone; he did mechanical work around the village.
He was last seen alive on May 09 around10:00 hrs by Bharrat Bhinauth, whom he was doing mechanical work for. Sawh left for his home and did not return to complete the work.
As a result, the following day, Bhinauth visited Sawh’s home and saw him lying on his bed from through a window. He called out to him several times but got no response, and assumed he was drunk and went away.
On May 11, Bhinauth returned to Sawh’s home to get him to complete fixing his car and found him lying in the same position on his bed. As a result, a report was made to the police.
The police visited and the home, however, due to the decomposed state of the body, it was not possible to determine whether the body bore marks of violence.
Sawh’s body was later escorted to the Memorial Gardens mortuary and is awaiting post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
An accident along the Coldingen Public Road, East Coast Demerara in the wee hours of Sunday claimed the life of a pedestrian who police is yet to identify.
The man’s name, age, and address remain unknown but police said he is a male East Indian whose age is estimated to be 60 years and was clad in dark blue and white boxers.
The man was struck down by a Police Constable of North Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
According to reports, the policeman was driving motor car – PAE 2960 – when he alleged that the man walked into the path of his vehicle.
The policeman said he applied brakes but despite his efforts he collided with the pedestrian. As a result of this collision, the pedestrian fell onto the road surface and received injuries about his body.
The Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was them escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary and is awaiting post-mortem examination.
A breathalyser test conducted on the policeman showed a reading of .000%. He was served with notice of intended prosecution
John Williams, a 33-year-old machine operator of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was stabbed to death Saturday night around 21:15 hrs at Commerce Street, Georgetown.
Police Headquarters, in a statement, said the crime was perpetrated by three suspects, Daniel Badley, 19, of Quamina Road Beterverwagting, ECD and a 14 and 15-year-old, both students.
According to reports, Williams was walking Water Street with a green haversack on his back. He turned east onto Commerce Street and was confronted by the three teens from behind.
It is alleged that the 15-year-old held on to Williams’ haversack but he put up a resistance and as a result one of the suspects stabbed him in his left upper chest, with a knife. Williams immediately fell face down on the roadway.
The teen boys walked away in an eastern direction and escaped.
The Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned, and Williams was examined and pronounced dead by a doctor of Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Two of the suspects, the 14-year-old old and the 15-year-old, were arrested. Efforts are being made to have the other suspect arrested.
The said suspects were questioned, and they claimed that the intent was to rob the victim. A green handle knife was found in the waist of the 15-year-old when he was arrested.
According to the Hydromet Service, the La Nina (rainy) season has officially begun. As such, several locations countrywide have been impacted by the rains and temporary flooding.
However, Region Nine (Upper Takutu – Upper Essequibo) has been significantly affected by continuous showers and flooding in low-lying areas.
Villages such as Toka, Massara, Yakarinta, Arannaputa Valley, Karasabi, Tiger Pond, Sand Creek, Karaudaranu and Katoonarib continue to be flooded at various levels.
As a result, persons living in the Region and those who intend to travel there must be advised of the following:
Safety is priority. Use protective rain gear and stay away from flooded areas.
Pay attention to weather and flood advisories, and operate with caution.
Store potable water for drinking and everyday use in a safe and sealed container.
Maintain communication with family and friends to share updates as they occur.
Residents nationwide are urged to be vigilant and remain cautious during this rainy season, and to report any impacts to their local authorities or the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) on 600-7500 at any time.
