IPL 2026: Holder stars in Titans’ win over Punjab Kings

The Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a crucial four-wicket victory over the table-topping Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a low-scoring thriller for Match 46 of the TATA IPL 2026.

In front of a roaring home crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Titans executed a brilliant bowling performance upfront, spearheaded by a lethal opening burst from Mohammad Siraj and a four-wicket haul from Player-of-the-Match Jason Holder.

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that yielded spectacular immediate results on a pitch offering early bounce and movement. Siraj delivered a fiery first over to completely derail the usually explosive PBKS top order.

On merely the second delivery of the match, Siraj drew a false shot from Priyansh Arya, who was safely caught by debutant Nishant Sindhu. The very next ball, Siraj produced an absolute jaffa to find the inside edge of Cooper Connolly, sending the Australian back for a golden duck and leaving the Kings reeling at 2-2.

The situation worsened for the visitors when Kagiso Rabada was introduced into the attack. Operating at searing speeds upwards of 152 kmph, Rabada bowled a rare maiden-wicket over, dismissing the set Prabhsimran Singh (15 off 14) inside the Powerplay.

The Titans’ dominance continued in the middle overs as Jason Holder utilised his height and variations perfectly. Holder dismissed PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer (19) and wreaked havoc on the middle order, reducing the table-toppers to a perilous 47-5.

However, young Suryansh Shedge engineered a phenomenal rescue mission. Displaying remarkable maturity and immense power, Shedge launched a fierce counter-attack to register his maiden IPL fifty.

He smashed 57 off just 29 deliveries, beautifully supported by veteran Marcus Stoinis, who anchored the other end with a crucial 40 off 31 balls. The duo stitched together a vital 79-run partnership. A late 20-run cameo from Marco Jansen ensured the Punjab Kings posted a fighting total of 163-9 in their 20 overs.

Chasing 164 for victory, the Gujarat Titans faced early jitters when captain Shubman Gill departed for a mere five runs. However, the ever-reliable Sai Sudharsan stepped up to stabilise the innings.

Playing the anchor role to perfection, Sudharsan compiled a steady 57 off 41 deliveries, rotating the strike intelligently and punishing the bad balls with five boundaries and a six.

Jos Buttler (26 off 22) provided solid support, helping to construct a 53-run partnership that kept the chase on track. Yet, the Punjab Kings refused to surrender quietly.

The pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Vijaykumar Vyshak bowled with immense heart, picking up crucial wickets at regular intervals to drag the contest deep into the final overs.

Vyshak accounted for both Buttler and the dangerous middle-order hitters, finishing with impressive figures of 2-31, while Arshdeep (2-24) kept the scoring rate tightly in check.

With the required run rate creeping up and the pressure mounting, Washington Sundar arrived at the crease to play a match-winning cameo.

Displaying ice-cool temperament, the all-rounder unleashed a flurry of boundaries, scoring a rapid 40 off just 23 balls (laced with five fours and a six). Guided by Sundar’s calculated aggression, the Titans successfully chased down the target, reaching 167-6 in 19.5 overs to seal a dramatic win which also marked their third consecutive victory of the season. (IPL)
