Chers compatriotes de partout,

Frè m ak sè m toupatou,

Dear compatriots everywhere,

Dear compatriots everywhere,

This year, we are commemorating the 216th anniversary of the famous Battle of Vertières, an event which, by the way, never got to capture the attention of historians around the world despite its scope and all the consequences it triggered. This compelling reality speaks of the appalling true situation of human rights even today in this pseudo-civilized world. It also speaks of this century old systematic isolation which has witnessed the steady decline of our nation; a nation that was born under such glorious circumstances.

The 18th day of November of every year should be an opportunity for the entire world to turn towards Haiti, and to pay a richly deserved homage to my brave forefathers who defeated slavery through their incomparable determination and tremendous sacrifices; thus showing the entire world the road to freedom. Vertières symbolizes indeed the triumph of bravery over tyranny, of pragmatism over fatalism and of genuine human rights over despicable greed.

As we commemorate the 216th anniversary of that colossal battle, we do not simply pay tribute to the military genius of that army of famished and poorly equipped negroes who defeated some of the best soldiers in the world at the time. Vertières marked the beginning of a brand new world order, so to speak.

Vertières has its rightful place among the world’s historical treasures. My forefathers heroism is not less worthy of praise than that of the european generals who are revered for their conquests. The heroes of Vertières are not known for their ability to dispossess and subjugate members of other nations. Instead, they courageously fought and defeated the powerful tyrants who had subjugated them, and dispossessed them of their freedom and humanity… But Vertières belongs, first and foremost, to the haitian nation’s. At a particularly difficult moment like the one we are currently experiencing, Vertières reminds us that if there is one nation in the world with the built-in courage to pull itself out of this predicament, that country’s name is HAITI.

I wish you all a safe Vertières Day. Wherever you are and whatever you do, please remember HAITI.

MÈSI POU ATANSYON NOU!

MERCI POUR VOTRE ATTENTION!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION!
