Deadly crash: Presidential Guard was speeding, overtaking vehicles; woman seriously injured

Presidential Guard who died in an accident on Sunday morning was reportedly speeding and overtaking a line of vehicles when he lost control and crashed into an electrical pole and ended up inside a trench at Coverden, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is Avandel Kevin Narine, a Police Corporal stationed at President Guard and attached to Castellani House; he resided at New Market Street, Georgetown.

Police Headquarters said the accident occurred at about 06:20 hrs; three others who were inside the silver grey Land Cruiser PAD 5264 were injured but only one is in a serious condition.

According to the Police, the vehicle is owned by Anter Narine of Alma Avenue, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown.

The three other occupants in the vehicle have been identified as Arvin Enouch, a 24-year-old from Good Hope, East Coast Demerara; Marcia Dundas, a 23-year-old from Old Road, Land of Canaan, EBD; and Cassie Atkinson, a 22-year-old of Kitty, Georgetown.

Enquires disclosed that the Land Cruiser was speeding south along the eastern side of the public road at Coverden; it is alleged that Narine was overtaking several vehicles which were proceeding in the same direction when he lost control.

As a result of the collision, the vehicle sustained extensive damage and the driver was taken out of the vehicle by the Police and public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition, along with the other occupants and escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

Corporal Narine was pronounced dead while Cassie Atkinson was transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. The two others were discharged.

Corporal Narine’s body was transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for storage.
