IPL: Super Giants edge Mumbai after Stoinis’ powerful 89*
Lucknow Super Giants edged Mumbai Indians to move up to third on the IPL points table with a five-run victory in Match 63 in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Chasing 178, Mumbai Indians were kept to 172-5, despite an opening stand of 90 in 9.4 overs between skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan.
Left-handed Kishan made 59 off 39 and Rohit 37 off 25, but only Tim David got going thereafter with an unbeaten 32 off 19 as the Lucknow bowlers pegged things back.
Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi led the fightback with 2-26 and Yash Thakur took 2-40.
Earlier, Lucknow recovered from 35-3 to post 177-3, a resurgence led by Marcus Stoinis and skipper Krunal Pandya, who eventually retired hurt one short of a fifty.
Stoinis blasted an unbeaten 89 off 47 balls, an innings that included eight sixes and four fours, as Jason Behrendorff took 2-30. While Lucknow moved to third on the table, Mumbai’s defeat saw them slipped to fourth.
