Convicted trafficker bolts from guards, scales fence to escape
Law enforcement officials are on the hunt for an inmate who escaped from the custody of officers at the New Amsterdam Prison in Region Six on Friday.
The prisoner has been identified as Suraj Singh.
He was convicted of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and was serving a 41 months sentence.
Information reaching the News Room revealed that Singh was among four other convicted inmates who were out of the prison facility carrying out land clearing duties when he made good his escape.
Singh reported said he wanted to defecate and was at a nearby bush when he suddenly scaled a fence and began to run.
An alarm raised and a chase began but he made good his escape heading further north in the bushes.
A joint operation was launched in search of the escapee to be recaptured.
Singh, 31, of No. 72 Village, East Berbice Corentyne and 55-year-old Mourice Vansluytman of No. 70 Village were arrested by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) in September 2022 after they were found with several parcels of marijuana and a shotgun with 16 live cartridges.
