Boyfriend, two brothers among four arrested for murder of Berbice woman, son

Melisa Arokium’s boyfriend is among four persons in custody for her murder and that of her eight-year-old son, Anthony.

Those in custody are: the boyfriend, 37-year-old Shailendra Umrao; her brother who lives with her, 33-year-old Serrana Arokium; another brother who made the discovery, 26-year-old Nicholas Arokium and the woman’s neighbour, 38-year-old Deo Naris.

The Police suspect that the 31-year-old self-employed woman and her son were dead for several hours before they were found in a pool of blood at their Rose Hall Town, Corentyne home on Wednesday.

The alleged double-murder occurred between 06:30 hrs and 13:30 hrs on Wednesday.

Dead: Melisa Arokium and Anthony Arokium

According to the statement from the Police, investigations indicate that Arokium sustained multiple chop wounds to the back of her neck, one wound to the left waist and one chop wound to the left upper hand.

Anthony’s body was also examined and it revealed that he suffered from several chop wounds to his right side, head, and face.

The bodies were escorted yesterday to the Port Mourant Hospital and certified dead by a doctor on duty. The bodies are at Arokium’s Funeral Home, awaiting post-mortem examinations.

The Police investigations are ongoing.
