Three die in horrific smash-up at Mahaica

This car was being driven by its owner, Balram Thuknauth, a 21-year-old Huntley Mahaicony. The other occupant in this car was Baskar Ramdeen, a 19-year-old of Back Steet Better Hope, ECD.

Another car involved involved in the accident, PAD 171, was also driven by its owner, Keyon Stoute, a 37-year-old of 69 Logwood Enmore, ECD; the truck (BMS 2), owned and driven by Bhupaul Bhawandas, a 51-year-old of Quamina Street, Georgetown.

Police Headquarters said that Thuknauth was proceeding East on the northern driving lane of Unity public road while Stoute was proceeding on the opposite driving lane behind the truck.

Stoute alleged that the motorcycle (with no lights on) overtook him and collided with the right side portion of Thuknauth’s car, which caused the driver to spin twice into the path of motor car PAD 171.

Stoute pulled left to avoid a collision and ended up in the southern driving lane parapet.

As a result of the crash, the motorcyclist and the pillion rider were flung off the motorcycle, collided with the right side of the truck and fell onto the roadway, receiving injuries on their bodies.

Shawn Persaud, who was in the front seat of the car, was pinned down, while the other occupant in the rear seat, Baskar Ramdeen, received injuries about his body.

The motorcyclist, pillion rider, and the two occupants of motor car PGG 9823 were picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where three of them were pronounced dead.

Police said Ramdeen was admitted to the facility suffering from a punctured Spleen. Thuknauth was escorted to the Mahicony Cottage Hospital where he is being treated for Cerebral Concussion.

Stoute and the truck driver are in custody.
