Crane topples at Providence worksite killing 34-Y-0 man

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Shawn Anthony Joseph, a 34-year-old man from No. 76 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

At the time of his death, Joseph was operating a crane which toppled and pinned him underneath at Parker Street, Providence, East Bank Demerara, at around 11:30 hrs on Thursday.

The crane was fitted with a hammer to drive concrete piles.

A report from Police Headquarters revealed that Tepuri Group, which is owned by Mikhail Rodrigues, called ‘Guyanese Critic’, was contracted to build a wharf at Providence.

The wharf is located on the Eastern side of the Demerara River. At the time of the operation, Joseph was alone in the crane while his brothers, Devon DeSantos, Nigel Bourne and other employees were in close proximity.

“The crane toppled on the wharf, which caused Shawn Joseph to jump out of the operating area of the Crane and fell on the wharf and was pinned by the crane.

“EMT arrived at the scene, where the body was examined and pronounced dead by Doctor Lowe. Workers were interviewed, and efforts were being made to remove the Crane so that the body of Shawn Joseph could be recovered,” the Police report noted.

Meanwhile, at the scene, Rodrigues told reporters that his company adheres to all safety regulations.

“We have been in par with all the safety regulations and requirements.

“He (Joseph) was driving a pile. Some movement happened with the footing of the pile and the crane tilted.”

He added, “We are willing to work with all the bodies, the ministries to ensure that everything that is needed, is provided.”
