Youths develop ‘Litta Reporta’ app to improve solid waste management
“The Litta Reporting app is basically an app to bridge the communication between persons who are affected by litter and improper solid waste management within their communities and authorities who can actually solve these issues,” Bacchus said.
Using the app, authorities can analyse trends at certain areas to know what areas have a lot of garbage, how frequently this happens and how often it is cleared. It will assist with creating data-driven solutions.
Bacchus said the app is a product of five years’ work and it was designed to help make Guyana cleaner by tracking dumpsites and coordinating cleanup events.
She started volunteering to conduct clean up campaigns around her Better Hope, East Coast Demerara community in 2019.
Soon after, she realised that there is a need for this software.
“We would go and pick it up by ourselves but after a while we realised that there should be a more organised way of doing this thing.
“That’s when we sat down and we thought about this and thought about how we can have a better approach…we can get persons to do the work that we do, report instances of litter in their community so that they can get involved with cleaning up their communities,” she said.
Bacchus will join her five other developers/partners from Cassini Technologies Inc. on Saturday to provide the public with information about the app. The company that the team is part of develops a wide range of products ranging from application software, management systems, websites and so forth, even chat bots.
Already, the developers from Cassini Technologies Inc. engaged the Environment Protection Agency and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils to conduct the clean up activities.
