Suriname beat Guyana 4-1 in Concacaf U-20 Qualifiers
Suriname inflicted a 4-1 defeat on Guyana in Group B action of the Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Qualifiers on Tuesday morning at the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association’s Technical Centre.
The huge loss is Guyana’s second in three games, following their opening 4-0 defeat against Antigua and Barbuda and a subsequent 2-2 draw with El Salvador.
Suriname surged ahead early when Robinio Pinas scored in the seventh minute. Jermaine Rijssel then doubled the advantage in the 35th minute, a lead the Dutch-speaking nation took into half-time.
Matrim Martin scored Guyana’s lone goal in the 76th minute, before Suriname got two strikes in quick succession before the final whistle.
Djaier Prijor netted in the 85th minute, and four minutes later Donagay Misidjang completed the rout.
The defeat means the Guyanese are now fourth on the five-team table with just a solitary point, and one game remaining against the Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday from 10:30h.
Suriname’s second straight victory puts them top of the table on six points, followed by El Salvador (4) and Antigua and Barbuda (3) in second and third respectively, and Turks and Caicos Islands (0) in fifth.
Following the round-robin stage, the top team in Group B will advance to the 2024 Concacaf Men’s U-20 Championship, where they will join the six pre-seeded top-ranked nations.
The tournament features 27 national teams vying for supremacy between February 23 to March 2.
