But despite the situation, Benn noted the ministry will not be conducting a gun amnesty programme.
“The situation about gun crimes and holding and having illegal guns, we are not going to doing any amnesty.
“Those who have guns (illegal) should walk into the nearest police station and give them up or put them somewhere. You are not supposed to have them.
“If you have an illegal gun, pass by the police station, put it in a bag and throw it in the yard,” Benn told reporters.
According to him, the authorities are “thoroughly” against the possession of illegal firearms which is said to be linked to drug and criminal activities.
Subsequently, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said the government is not considering any amnesty for persons who have illegal guns in their possession but it wants to step up enforcement efforts.
