Motorcyclist injured in Turkeyen accident

A 31-year-old motorcyclist suffered injuries after he was involved in an accident along the Turkeyen Railway Embankment road Monday night.

Police said the accident occurred at about 22:46 hrs within the vicinity of the Aquatic Centre.

The motorcyclist, Quacy McCalmon from Norton Street, Lodge was hit by a motorcar being driven by 22-year-old Samuel Blackman from Non-Pariel, East Coast Demerara.

According to Blackman, he was proceeding west on the Railway Embankment, and while in the vicinity of the Aquatic Centre, he made a U-turn and felt an impact on the front of his vehicle.

When he checked, he saw McCalmon on the ground, bleeding.

Blackman further told investigators that a minibus arrived shortly after with persons suspected to be relatives of McCalmon.

He then heard a gunshot coming from one of the persons by the minibus.

A security guard in the area also told investigators he saw one of the persons who arrived in the minibus discharging a round in the air as they collected the injured motorcyclist and drove off with him.

Investigators found one 9mm spent shell at the scene.

McCalmon is at the Georgetown Public Hospital receiving medical attention for his injuries. While Blackman is in custody.

Police are now trying to ascertain who discharged the firearm at the scene as investigations continue.
