SOCU investigation into Brutus commences

The Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) has commenced an investigation into allegations of financial impropriety levelled against Deputy Police Commissioner (ag) Calvin Brutus.

Brutus Thursday opted to take annual leave to allow for a probe.

“Mr. Brutus has proceeded on leave to facilitate a full and complete investigation by SOCU,” Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn has stated.

As a result, Benn said no promotions for Brutus will be considered at this time.

“Any promotion will be subject to the outcome of the investigation.

“SOCU has already commenced its investigation and the Government will be guided by the outcome of such investigation,” Benn stated.

On Thursday, Police headquarters stated that “consequent to allegations of financial impropriety levelled against Deputy Commissioner (ag) Calvin Brutus on social media and established media houses,” Brutus requested permission to “proceed on annualised vacation leave with immediate effect to facilitate an investigation in the best interest of the Guyana Police Force.”

“Permission was granted by the Commissioner of Police through the prescribed procedure,” Police Headquarters said in the statement.

The move comes days after the Force announced that there has been a rotation in its top brass.

The rotation, the Force has said, was part of the modernisation plan.

Brutus, who was previously in charge of ‘Administration’ was among the three ranks who were reassigned.
