Opening game of Guyana/Grenada Basketball Series postponed
The Guyana Basketball Federation, out of an abundance of caution, on Friday night postponed the opening game of the three-match series between Guyana and Grenada Senior National Men’s teams at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Federation, in a statement on Friday night, said “the decision to postpone the game was made following an assessment of the playing surface earlier today.”
“The Sports Hall recently underwent a complete repainting of the court flooring. Despite efforts to expedite the drying process, the surface has not yet cured sufficiently to meet the safety standards required for high-level international competition,” the Federation highlighted.

The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) announces the cancellation of Game One of the international friendly series between the Guyana and Grenada Senior Men’s National Teams, originally scheduled for tonight, Friday, March 6th, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The decision to postpone the game was made following an assessment of the playing surface earlier today. The Sports Hall recently underwent a complete repainting of the court flooring.
Despite efforts to expedite the drying process, the surface has not yet cured sufficiently to meet the safety standards required for high-level international competition.
The GBF’s primary concern remains the health and safety of the athletes. The residual moisture and tackiness on the fresh paint present a significant slip and injury risk. After consultation with the venue management and both coaching staffs, the difficult decision was made to cancel the evening’s proceedings.
“We are extremely disappointed for the fans, our players, and our guests from Grenada who have prepared for this match,” said Michael Singh, President of the Guyana Basketball Federation.
“We were eager to unveil the newly refurbished court, but we cannot compromise player safety. We thank the public for their understanding and ask for their continued support as we finalise the new schedule.”
The GBF is working closely with the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall management to confirm the readiness of the court surface. Both teams remain in-country, and the series is now expected to tip off on Saturday, March 7th, at 8:00 PM, pending a final inspection of the court on Saturday morning.
All tickets purchased for Friday’s game will be honoured for the rescheduled Game One on Saturday. Refunds are also available at the original point of purchase for those unable to attend the new date.
The GBF will issue a final confirmation on the status of the court and the Saturday game time by 10:00 AM tomorrow (Saturday).
We apologise for the inconvenience and thank the public, our sponsors, and the Grenada National Basketball Association for their patience and cooperation.
