The mother of 28-year-old Vasanti Gordon, a self-employed make-up artist of Islington, East Bank Berbice, is calling for justice after her daughter was shot by a former partner.

According to police, the incident occurred while Gordon was sitting in her vehicle outside her residence when the suspect, also 28, approached armed with a handgun and discharged several rounds in her direction.

She was struck and later taken to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital, where she was examined and admitted with gunshot injuries to her leg and thigh. Her condition is listed as stable.

Police said a spent shell casing was recovered from the vehicle and has been processed as part of the investigation.

Speaking with reporters, Gordon’s mother, Kay Gordon, said she was told her daughter was shot multiple times.

“I don’t know… like the two of them had some confrontation and he shot her five times to both of her legs,” she said.

Kay Gordon also expressed concern about her daughter’s safety while hospitalised and called for increased police presence at the facility.

Vasanti Gordon is a mother of two children from a previous relationship. Her mother said she was no longer involved with the suspect at the time of the incident.

“I am hoping that God can help her so that she can feel better and come out of the hospital with both legs working,” she said.

She added that she is hoping for justice.

“If he is to get caught and she is to get justice, God will work everything out in his own way,” she said.

The suspect remains at large as investigations continue.
