East Ruimveldt man succumbs days after explosion at home

Fifty-six-year-old Troy Alleyne, the man who was critically injured following an alleged gas cylinder explosion at his East Ruimveldt, Georgetown house has succumbed to his injuries.

The News Room was reliably informed that Alleyne died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Tuesday morning.

He was admitted at the hospital following the incident which left him with severe burns about his body.

According to a police report, at about 02:32h, Alleyne and his family were at their Pineapple Street and Front Road, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown house, when his wife, Melissa Alleyne, woke up and noticed a strong smell of what appeared to be gas.

She alerted him and he ventured to check where the smell was coming from.

“I seh Troy come. Tell me if is just me smelling gas or if just me nose.

“Couple seconds after all I hear ‘boom’. All I see everything red and everything moving like flame red and everything moving,” Melissa previously told reporters.

Police said the eastern side of the building reportedly collapsed and caught fire as a result of the explosion.

Public-spirited citizens responded and assisted the family, after which Alleyne was taken to the hospital.

Melissa said Troy was responsive at the time and was speaking with her. “Troy was responsive. He was talking and thing. He tell me he feeling strong and I seh Troy is weh the gas was smelling from and he said is downstairs in we kitchen, the hose did leaking,” she explained.

The Guyana Fire Service responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

The area was later processed by police ranks, and CCTV cameras in the vicinity were observed and are being reviewed as part of the investigation.
