‘Gold is Money’ lay down marker on dramatic opening night of Guinness Street Football

The National Cultural Centre tarmac was treated to a masterclass of street football as the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship burst into life, with heavyweights Gold is Money delivering a statement of intent on a night defined by clinical finishing and high-stakes drama.

While many of the evening’s contests were settled by the narrowest of margins, Gold is Money showed no such interest in a close affair.

They dismantled Stevedore 5-0 in a ruthless display of attacking prowess, asserting themselves as the team to beat in the early stages of the competition.

The tone for the tournament was set in the very first match, as Island All-Stars held their nerve to overcome Alexander Village.

After a breathless 2-2 draw in regulation time, the All-Stars triumphed 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout.

It was a recurring theme throughout the evening. Sparta Boss, often the benchmark for street football in the city, found themselves frustrated by a disciplined East Bank Ballers outfit.

After a scoreless stalemate, the perennial contenders relied on a solitary penalty conversion to scrape through 1-0 and keep their campaign on track. East Coast All-Stars similarly required the lottery of spot-kicks to see off Make it Happen after their clash ended 1-1.

Elsewhere, Tiger Bay looked sharp in a -1 victory over Rising Stars, while Festival City produced one of the night’s most polished performances, brushing aside Sophia All-Stars 3-0.

In a much tighter tactical battle, Team Immaculate did just enough to edge California Square 1-0.
