Police are investigating a brazen robbery under arms carried out on Monday afternoon at a business establishment along Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

The incident occurred at approximately 14:50 hrs and involved a business entity and a 43-year-old vendor from Providence.

According to preliminary reports, the woman was at the establishment with her family making a purchase when two masked men, dressed in orange jumpsuits, approached the cashier’s area. One of the suspects, armed with a handgun, reportedly ordered the cashier to step away from the register.

The second suspect, who was unarmed, then went behind the counter and began removing cash from the drawer, placing it into a haversack, while his accomplice stood guard. During the ordeal, the armed suspect also relieved the 43-year-old woman of her purse and cellphone.

Investigations revealed that the two men then moved downstairs, where two other accomplices were waiting on the ground floor. The group of four subsequently exited the building and escaped on two black Honda XR motorcycles without registration plates, heading north along Diamond Public Road.

Authorities said the business entity was robbed of approximately $4.14 million Guyana currency. The female victim also lost a black purse valued at $5,000, which contained $90,000 in cash, along with personal documents including her driver’s licence, identification card, and bank card.

Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
