Calvin Ming has made a strong start in the Need for Speed Karting Championship, taking the early lead in both the Briggs Senior Heavy and Briggs Senior Light categories after an impressive double performance in the latest round of competition.
Competing at the 555 Speedway in Georgetown last weekend, Ming showed pace and composure in both divisions, collecting key victories and valuable championship points to move ahead of the field.

In the Briggs Senior Heavy category, Ming, driving kart number four, finished the round with 55 points to lead the standings. His performance included pole position in qualifying, victory in the heat, second place in the pre-final, and a commanding win in the final, where he collected the maximum 25 points.
Mikhail Persaud, in kart number 34, sits second in the Briggs Senior Heavy standings with 41 points. Persaud was consistent throughout the day, finishing second in the heat and final and third in the pre-final, but he remains 14 points behind Ming.
Jeremy Tenpow is also within reach after earning 38 points. Tenpow’s round was highlighted by a win in the pre-final and a third-place finish in the final.
Ming said he was pleased with the result, especially given the level of competition he faced from Persaud, Tenpow and the rest of the field. He noted that the racing was close, clean and competitive, adding that the improvement in the Briggs Senior Heavy class was encouraging for the future of karting in Guyana.
Steven Nobrega and Salim Azeez are tied on 24 points, with Nobrega holding fourth position in the standings. Nobrega finished fourth in the final, while Azeez continued to show improvement as the championship develops. John Mohamed is sixth with 13 points, followed by Leonardo Jienarine on 12 and Alfred Madray on four.
Ming also leads the Briggs Senior Light category, where he sits on 58 points after another strong race day. He completed a clean sweep in the division, taking pole position and winning the heat, pre-final and final to strengthen his place at the top of the standings.
Reflecting on the Briggs Senior Light final, Ming said the race was just as difficult as the Heavy category, explaining that an early gap proved important as the chasing drivers applied pressure throughout the race. He said he had to remain focused and avoid mistakes, as the competition was close and the result could have gone either way.
Ming also credited his team at Ming Performance Group for the successful weekend, while acknowledging the continued progress of other MPG drivers, including Khalil Rickford, who has been battling near the front of the field.
He also thanked Lawson Motors and CS55 for providing his Tony Kart, along with his sponsors MPS, FMC, M Depot, Babecave, Interstate Batteries and Terracrete for their continued support.
Behind Ming in the Briggs Senior Light standings, Steven Nobrega is second with 40 points, while Justin Tenpow holds third place with 35 points. Zachary Persaud follows in fourth with 31 points after collecting valuable points during the round, while Rickford completes the top five with 24 points. Matthew Phang is sixth with 18 points.
The next round of the Need for Speed Karting Championship is scheduled for September 13 at the Leonora Stadium.
