L’ancien chef de la Police a annoncé sa démission en tant que Représentant Permanent d’Haïti auprès de l’Organisation des États Américains (OEA). Sa décision de se démettre de sa fonction fait suite à l’ordonnance définitive rendue par le Juge d’instruction Walter Wesser Voltaire, le renvoyant devant le tribunal criminel pour son implication dans l’assassinat de Jovenel Moïse survenu le 7 juillet 2021.
Dans une correspondance adressée au Ministre des affaires étrangères et des cultes, Jean Victor Géneus, Léon Charles a dit être accusé de manière injuste et calomnieuse par l’ordonnance du juge Voltaire.
« Déterminé, quoique l’ordonnance ne m’ait pas encore été signifiée, à combattre vigoureusement, par toutes les voies de droits, les accusations fantaisistes portées à mon encontre afin de faire reconnaître mon innocence et laver mon honneur, j’ai l’avantage de vous remettre ma démission en tant que Représentant Permanent de la République d’Haïti auprès de l’Organisation des États Américains. Cette démission prend effet dès réception de la présente », peut-on lire dans la lettre de M. Charles.
Inculpé dans le magnicide du 7 juillet 2021, Léon Charles figure parmi les personnes (plus d’une cinquantaine) renvoyées devant le tribunal criminel. Martine Moïse, Claude Joseph et Rénald Lubérice sont comptés dans cette liste.

a massive hotel project along Carifesta Avenue belongs to the State and not City Hall, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo reiterated Thursday.
Additionally, he denied that the hotel project is eating away at green spaces in the city, saying that almost three dozen grounds in the city, some overrun with bush, are being developed.
Following public statements by City Mayor, Alfred Mentore that the lands for the project belonged to the City and that legal action will be taken against the government, the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) produced maps and data which shows the lands are not owned by the City.
“The only portion of land that the City Council held in the area North of Carifesta Avenue was a dam between GT&T and Saints Stanislaus ground (called Wireless Road). This was leased to a private citizen for commercial purposes by the Council,” the GLSC stated.
The GLSC said it has “substantial” historic records to prove State control of the lands for well over 100 years and “at no time during this period has there been any interference by the Council as to the ownership of the said lands.”
Dr Jagdeo said that the hotel project is important for the development of Guyana and for bringing high-paying jobs for Guyanese.
Speaking about the benefits of the project, he indicated the conference centre at the new hotel will be five times that of the Marriott.
“It seems as though we have to fight for every development project” Jagdeo stated, noting that he faced similar criticism for the development of the Marriott hotel project, which sits on what was essentially a a dumpsite by the ocean.
Regarding the move to swap the sports grounds into foundation for the hotel project, Dr Jagdeo said it is not like the city will be without any green spaces and recreational facility. He posited that such spaces are a priority of the government.
That is why, he said he last year met with Georgetown citizens and it was decided that all 34 grounds in the city, from Agricola on the East Bank to Cummings Lodge on the East Coast will be rehabilitated and those works are ongoing. Those works include raising grounds, fencing, installing lights, fixing and/or building new buildings.
“The city will be greener and cleaner and we need the buildings,” Dr Jagdeo stated, noting that the need for recreational facilities must be married with the need for development projects.

Guyana’s civil aviation authority will hold a “read out” of the black box from the Army helicopter that crashed last December near the border with Venezuela, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said Thursday afternoon.
“At that time we will find out what took place in the helicopter,” Dr Jagdeo, also General Secretary of the PPP, said at a press conference at his party’s Freedom House headquarters in Georgetown.
The black box, which records voices from the cockpit and flight parameters such as airspeed, altitude, vertical acceleration, and the positions of key flight controls, was sent to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in Washington, United States for analysis.
Dr Jagdeo said the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) will hold the read out.
Dr Jagdeo was responding to the call of the main opposition People’s National Congress for the government to give an update on the investigation into the crash. He said the Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton could have called the GCAA for an update on the investigation.
The investigation into the crash is being headed by GCAA’s Airworthiness Inspector Krishnanand Ramlachana.
The GCAA and the Police Force are the two agencies that are spearheading the investigation. And in keeping with protocols, the GDF has convene a Board of Inquiry (BoI) for its own internal review.
The December 6, 2023 crash claimed the lives of five soldiers: Colonel Michael Shahoud, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, Retired Brigadier Gary Beaton, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Welcome and Warrant Officer Class 2 Jason Khan.
They were part of a seven member crew who were on board the army’s Bell 412 helicopter. As they were 30 miles from the Venezuela border, signal for the helicopter was lost. About two hours after take-off, the aircraft transmitted an emergency locator transmitter signal from coordinates approximately 30 miles east of Arau on Guyana’s western borders.
Search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to locate the crew members and the aircraft.
And the following day, after strenuous efforts, the team found the crash site about nine miles south-east of Blake Slater’s airstrip, Ekereku Top, Cuyuni River and then confirmed that five soldiers died.
The two soldiers who survived the crash are Corporal Dwayne Jackson and Lieutenant Andio Crawford.
