Four-Day: Savory (77), Chanderpaul (70) hit fifties, but Harpy Eagles trail Volcanoes

Despite gritty half-centuries from left-handers Kemol Savory and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Guyana Harpy Eagles trailed Windward Volcanoes by 29 runs by stumps of day two in their Regional Four-Day match against Windward Volcanoes at Sir Vivian Richard Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda.

Starting the day 2-0, Harpy Eagles closed on 257-9 from 86 overs in response to Volcanoes’ 286 all out on day one.

Savory faced 153 balls and struck eight fours and two sixes, while Chanderpaul faced 179 balls, hitting eight fours.

The pair added 99 for the fourth wicket, the best partnership of the innings, after Harpy Eagles were reduced to 65-3 with Matthew Nandu (4), Kevlon Anderson (4) and skipper Tevin Imlach (23) all dismissed.

Keemo Paul (1), Gudakesh Motie (19), Nial Smith (0), Isai Thorne (9) all fell cheaply, leaving Veerasammy Permaul (20*) and Raymond Perez (2*) as the last pair unbeaten at stumps.

Top-order batter Perez batted at number 11 after the shoulder injury he suffered during last year’s Super50 flared up, forcing him to miss a significant portion of the Volcanoes’ innings on the opening day.

Bowling for Volcanoes, seamer Gilon Tyson, who delivered an astonishing nine no-balls, has so far picked up 4-64 off 20 overs, off-spinner Kenneth Dember 3-48 off 21.2 and fast bowler Ryan John 2-54 off 18.

  • Fuel shipments to meet demand; no need to ‘panic purchase’ – Gov’t

Fuel shipments to meet demand; no need to ‘panic purchase’ – Gov’t

The Government of Guyana is assuring Guyanese that fuel supplies will be normalised starting Monday night, following a delay in shipment from one major oil company and a resultant shortage during the day.

    See full release below:

Government is aware of reports of some level of panic over fuel availability in the country.

Following a meeting with fuel importers, it was discovered that one major oil company developed a delay with its fuel shipment.  This company has since received fuel and is presently discharging same.

All importers have assured Government that the situation will be normalized as shipments arrived this afternoon and additional shipments are expected tomorrow and later in the week. See below a schedule of fuel shipment arrivals this week.

Consumers are advised that there is no need for concern, panic buying or hoarding, as adequate fuel stocks will be available within the system as the minor disruption is normalized.  The public is strongly cautioned that petroleum products are highly flammable and must be handled and stored with extreme care. The unsafe storage of gasoline, particularly in inappropriate containers, poses a serious fire risk and significantly increases the potential for injury, loss of life, and damage to property.

  • IPL 2026: Debutants Hinge and Hussain bowl Sunrisers to remarkable win over Rajasthan

IPL 2026: Debutants Hinge and Hussain bowl Sunrisers to remarkable win over Rajasthan

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced a blockbuster all-round performance to hand the Rajasthan Royals (RR) their first defeat of the TATA IPL 2026 season. In Match 21 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, an explosive 91 from stand-in captain Ishan Kishan propelled the hosts to a massive 216-6.

However, the night truly belonged to the SRH debutant pace duo of Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, who decimated the Royals’ chase and bowled them out for 159 to secure a commanding 57-run victory.

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends. Jofra Archer stunned the home crowd on the very first delivery of the match, removing Abhishek Sharma for a golden duck.

Walking in under immense early pressure, Ishan Kishan launched a breathtaking counter-attack. The SRH skipper dismantled the Royals’ bowling unit, compiling a spectacular 91 off just 44 deliveries (8x4s, 6x6s) while striking at an astonishing 206.82.

He dominated the Powerplay alongside Travis Head and later built a crucial 88-run stand with Heinrich Klaasen. Klaasen proved reliable as ever, anchoring the middle overs with a vital 40 off 26 balls to reclaim the coveted Orange Cap.

Kishan agonisingly fell nine runs short of a century, eventually falling to Sandeep Sharma. However, late fireworks from Nitish Kumar Reddy (28 off 13) and Salil Arora (24* off 13) ensured Sunrisers Hyderabad set a daunting 217-run target.

Chasing a mountain, the Royals walked straight into a nightmare orchestrated by 24-year-old debutant Praful Hinge. Hinge etched his name into the history books with a truly magical first over.

After giving up a single to Yashasvi Jaiswal on the first ball, he hurried teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into a top-edge for a golden duck. Two balls later, he clean-bowled Dhruv Jurel, and then forced South African debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius to flick the final delivery straight to square leg.

With that astonishing sequence, Hinge became the first bowler in the 19-year history of the IPL to claim three wickets in the opening over of an innings, finishing his first-ever over with mind-boggling figures of 1-0-1-3.

The carnage did not stop there. Fellow debutant Sakib Hussain joined the party by removing the dangerous Jaiswal for just one. When Hinge returned to clean up Parag, the league-leading Royals were left in utter ruin at 9-5 inside three overs.

Staring down an embarrassing defeat, Donovan Ferreira and veteran Ravindra Jadeja orchestrated a highly spirited rescue mission. The duo absorbed the pressure and capitalised on the loose deliveries, stitching together a monumental 118-run partnership for the sixth wicket to keep the crowd on their toes.

Ferreira played a sensational lone-warrior knock, scoring 69 off 44 balls. Jadeja provided vital support with a composed 45 off 32.

Just as the Royals dared to dream of a miracle, Eshan Malinga induced a crucial edge to dismiss Jadeja. Sakib Hussain then returned to the attack and completely broke Ferreira’s resistance with a perfectly disguised slower ball that shattered the stumps.

Sakib ripped through the tail, wrapping up the innings for 159 in 19 overs to cap off a historic night for the home side.

Sakib Hussain finished with outstanding figures of 4-24, registering the joint-best IPL bowling figures by an Indian on debut. Hinge mirrored the dominance with his own 4-34 to claim the Player of the Match award on debut.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad effectively utilised the element of surprise with their young pace battery, claiming a massive win. The Rajasthan Royals will need to quickly erase the memories of this top-order disaster and regroup before their next outing. (IPL)

  • National Sports Commission enhances security at venues

National Sports Commission enhances security at venues

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has intensified efforts to strengthen security across all its facilities, with Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle acknowledging long-standing concerns and outlining a renewed commitment to safeguarding patrons and property.

The move comes amid years of complaints from members of the public about incidents of vehicle break-ins and vandalism while attending events at NSC-managed venues.

Ninvalle admitted that the issue has been a persistent sore point, one that has affected the overall experience of sports fans and event patrons.

“Security at our venues has been a concern over the years, and we are not shying away from that reality,” Ninvalle said, while adding, “We’ve heard the complaints; vehicles being burglarised, property being damaged, and we understand the frustration of patrons who simply want to enjoy events without worrying about their safety or belongings.”

The DoS stressed that the commission still carries a significant responsibility to ensure its venues are properly monitored.

“Even though events are often hosted by private entities, the NSC has a duty to ensure that our facilities are adequately secured. We must have systems in place to monitor activity, deter criminal behavior, and assist in identifying those responsible when incidents occur,” Ninvalle explained.

Central to the commission’s upgraded approach is the installation and enhancement of surveillance systems.

Ninvalle confirmed that major improvements have already been completed at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, one of the country’s premier indoor sporting venues.

“The cameras at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall are now fully functional, with upgrades completed just last weekend,” he revealed.

“That is a major step forward for us, and we are already seeing the benefits of having a more reliable and comprehensive monitoring system in place.”

According to Ninvalle, similar upgrades are currently being rolled out at other NSC facilities across the country, as part of a broader initiative to modernise security infrastructure.

Beyond surveillance, the Director of Sport highlighted that the NSC is adopting a more proactive and holistic approach to venue security.

This includes reviewing existing protocols, strengthening coordination with law enforcement, and ensuring that security personnel are better equipped to respond to incidents.

“It’s about creating a safe and secure environment for everyone; athletes, officials, fans, and promoters alike. Our facilities are central to the development of sport in Guyana, and people must feel confident when they come out to support events,” Ninvalle stated.

He added that the commission’s push to enhance security is not just reactive, but also part of a long-term vision to elevate the standard of sports infrastructure nationwide.

Ninvalle was keen in pointing out, that the NSC is “going all out to improve what we already have in place. Proper security is essential, not just for protection, but for the reputation of our venues. When people know they can attend events without concern, it encourages greater participation and support for sport.”

With the upgrades already underway and more improvements on the horizon, the NSC is aiming to restore public confidence and ensure that its facilities provide a safe, secure, and enjoyable environment for all.

GT Ballers sweep to victory as GBF ramps up preparation ahead of Commonwealth Games

GT Ballers have been crowned Guyana Basketball Federation 3×3 champions, as the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) ramps up its preparations for the historic debut at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

With an unbeaten run, Anish Ramlall, Kimol Grimmond, Stephen George, and Shelroy Thomas secured the title with a commanding 21–14 victory over the Renegades in the final at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday.

The Renegades, featuring the likes of Travis Belgrave and Nikkoloi Smith, provided a stern test but ultimately could not dismantle the eventual champions in a high-intensity conclusion to a four-day national training camp.

The tournament serves as the opening act of a rigorous preparation phase for Guyana’s debut at the Commonwealth Games this summer.

Guyana will be one of 12 nations competing at the Scottish Event Centre between July 24-29, marking the first time the country has qualified for a basketball event at the Games.

Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) president Godfrey Munroe hailed the achievement as a “landmark moment,” backed by a significant grant to ensure the squad is not just participating, but competing.

The national set-up has been bolstered by the arrival of Bronx-born professional Kidani Brutus. A veteran of the 3×3 circuit who has previously represented the USA, Brutus — whose mother is Guyanese — is leading the coaching efforts.

He is joined by Canadian-based strength coach Jason Melhado and physiotherapist Jana Edghill.

The GBF is set to dispatch two squads to Suriname for the FIBA 3×3 Lite Quest on May 1-2 to secure qualification for the FIBA 3×3 Challenger in Brazil and provide the players with the international minutes required to handle the expanded 12-team field in Scotland.

In Glasgow, Guyana will face a daunting draw that includes regional rivals Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, as well as powerhouses Australia, New Zealand, and host nation Scotland.

  • Massy School Football: Chase’s Academic top St. Joseph’s High to end group stage unbeaten

Massy School Football: Chase’s Academic top St. Joseph’s High to end group stage unbeaten

Chase Academic Foundation underlined their status as tournament favourites with a ruthless 11-0 demolition of St Joseph’s High School to conclude an unbeaten group stage run in the Massy Distribution Under-18 Football tournament.

On a weekend defined by high-scoring spectacles and desperate scrambles for knockout qualification, Chase stood head and shoulders above the field.

Jaden Tasher and Shaquan David both registered clinical hat-tricks, while Darius Chester’s early brace set the tone for a match that felt more like a training exercise than a competitive fixture.

The 11-goal haul was bolstered by strikes from Mark Glasgow, Jaden Christian, and Aaron Vasconcellos, ensuring Chase enters the Round of 16 on Saturday with maximum momentum.

While Chase enjoyed a procession, other schools were forced to work considerably harder to keep their title hopes alive. New Central High emerged victorious from an eight-goal thriller against Charity Secondary, eventually prevailing 5-3.

Despite trailing early in the second half after Charity’s Darvel Gonsalves found the net, New Central responded with a late surge. A brace from Caedon Whyte alongside goals from Adriel Adams and Trevor Gordon proved too much for the Region Two side.

The goal-fest continued as Three Miles Secondary overcame Annandale Secondary 6-4. Lebron Mendoca led the charge with a double, supported by strikes from Joshua James, Durell Washington, Lebron Wharton, and Riley Tracey.

Annandale’s spirited comeback attempt, led by Ronoko Morris, fell short as they struggled to overcome the dismissal of Malachi Bollers in the 33rd minute.

In contrast to the weekend’s earlier shootouts, New Amsterdam Secondary produced a composed 3-0 victory over St John’s College. Enqi Leacock broke the deadlock within three minutes, but the result remained in the balance until second-half goals from Domonique Rodrigues and Jaffarie Albert secured the points.

Mackenzie High also relied on a standout individual performance to see off Carmel Secondary 4-2. Kemmany McKenzie was the hero of the hour, netting a hat-trick to cancel out an early opener from Carmel’s Keil Alonzo.

Elsewhere, the tension of the final group games resulted in a physical stalemate between Belladrum and Ann’s Grove Secondary, with five yellow cards brandished in a 0-0 draw.

Westminster Secondary were handed a simpler route to the next stage, awarded a walkover after The Bishops’ High School failed to appear.

The champion team is guaranteed G$300,000 for a school project, while the second and third teams will get G$200,000 and G$100,000, respectively.
