Aircraft damaged after striking capybara during landing at Ogle

A Trans Guyana Airways (TGA) aircraft was damaged Tuesday evening after striking a capybara during landing at the Eugene F. Correia (Ogle) International Airport, Ogle.

The aircraft, a Beechcraft 1900 bearing registration 8R-GAQ, had arrived from Suriname shortly after 6 PM when the incident occurred.

Preliminary information indicates that the aircraft’s propeller made contact with the animal on the runway. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft and caused it to veer off the runway.

Despite the extent of the damage, no injuries have been reported among passengers or crew. A senior company official confirmed that all occupants were safe following the incident.

The Beechcraft 1900 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft commonly used for regional operations. According to available flight data, aircraft 8R-GAQ regularly operates routes between Guyana and neighbouring destinations, including Suriname.

Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the animal gained access to the runway.

Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.

  • Four-Day: Motie and seamers set up intriguing final day as Harpy Eagles chase 232

Four-Day: Motie and seamers set up intriguing final day as Harpy Eagles chase 232

Another incisive effort from Gudakesh Motie, complemented by a clinical new-ball burst from the seamers, has left the West Indies Regional Four-Day clash between Guyana Harpy Eagles and Windward Islands Volcanoes on a knife-edge.

By stumps on the third day at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the Harpy Eagles reached 38 for 1, requiring a further 194 runs to secure a come-from-behind victory.

    FULL SCORECARD: https://matchcentre.windiescricket.com/match/f89cda16-6d0d-49e9-a8d3-961a7afdd375/scorecard/1

The day began with the Harpy Eagles resuming their first innings at 257 for 9, trailing the Volcanoes by 29 runs.

They managed to add only seven more to their overnight total before being dismissed for 264, handing the Windward Islands a slender 22-run lead.

Gilon Tyson was the pick of the bowlers for the Volcanoes, finishing with 5 for 69, while Kemol Savory and Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s earlier contributions of 77 and 70 remained the bedrock of the Guyana total.

With the narrow advantage in hand, the Volcanoes’ second innings started in disastrous fashion as Keemo Paul and Nial Smith utilized the new ball to devastating effect. The pair shared four quick wickets, ripping through the top order to leave the Volcanoes reeling and the match wide open.

However, Sunil Ambris stood tall amidst the wreckage as the experienced right-hander played a magnificent, unbeaten lone hand of 107, steering his side from the brink of collapse to a total of 209.

Ambris found some support from Shadrack Descarte, who contributed 39, but the story of the innings was once again the dominance of Motie.

The left-arm spinner followed up his first-innings heroics with figures of 4 for 46, ending the match with an impressive haul of 10 for 112 from 42.1 overs.

Chasing 232 for victory, the Harpy Eagles’ second innings began with an unexpected adjustment to the batting order. Test batsman Kevlon Anderson was promoted to open the innings alongside Matthew Nandu, as regular opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul was sidelined with a finger injury.

The complications for Guyana do not end there, with Raymond Perez also carrying a shoulder injury that saw him bat at number 11 in the first innings.

It is understood that Chanderpaul will be available to bat on the final day.

The chase hit an early snag when Anderson fell for four to the bowling of Ryan John, but Tevin Imlach joined Nandu to stabilise the innings.

Imlach showed positive intent to finish the day unbeaten on 27, while Nandu remained patient on seven.

U19 Inter-County: Persaud and Griffith headline dominant wins for Demerara and Berbice

The Guyana Cricket Board Under-19 Inter-County 50-over witnessed a day of bowling clinics as Demerara and Berbice asserted their dominance on Tuesday.

At the Lusignan Community Centre Ground, Demerara’s bowling unit turned the screws on a struggling Select XI.

The star of the show was leg-spinner Danesh Persaud, who dismantled the Select XI batting order with a devastating spell of 5-18.

Supported by Parmeshwar Ram, who claimed 2-18, the Demerara attack restricted the Select XI to a meagre 84 all out in 24 overs.

Joshua Budhram (17*) and Yannick Newton (16) provided the only real resistance in a primary display of bowling discipline.

The chase was a measured affair as despite losing four wickets along the way, Demerara never looked in true danger of slipping up.

Khush Seegobin anchored the early stages with 22, while Parmeshwar Ram capped off an excellent all-round day with 16. Emmanuel Lewis (14*) and Shamar Apple (11*) eventually steered the hosts home at 85-4 in just 17.2 overs, securing a comfortable six-wicket victory.

Meanwhile, at the Police Sports Club, Berbice recorded a 92-run demolition of Essequibo.

SUMMARY: Berbice 184 from 40.3 overs (Romario Ramdeholl 43, Richard Ramdeholl 37, Adrian Hetmyer 31, Vishal Williams 17; Darrius Pearson 5-33, Darwin Joseph 2-30) beat Essequibo 92 all out from 32.3 overs (Romario Bholo 28, Navindra Sankar 12*, Darwin Joseph 12; Gilbert Griffith 6-15) by 92 runs

Batting first, Berbice posted a competitive 184 in 40.3 overs, fueled by a collective effort from the middle order. Skipper Romario Ramdeholl top-scored with a gritty 43, while Richard Ramdeholl (37) and Adrian Hetmyer (31) added crucial runs to the tally.

Essequibo’s Darrius Pearson was the standout with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 5-33.

However, the Berbice total proved to be far more than enough once left-arm spinner Gilbert Griffith got the ball in his hands.

Griffith produced the performance of the round, slicing through the Essequibo lineup to finish with remarkable figures of 6-15 as Essequibo crumbled to 92 all out in 32.3 overs.

Romario Bholo offered the lone fight for the Cinderella County with 28.

  • Preparations on stream for One Guyana T10 Tapeball IV; Registration to open soon

Preparations on stream for One Guyana T10 Tapeball IV; Registration to open soon

The fourth season of the One Guyana T10 Tapeball is officially in motion as organisers confirmed today that preparations are “well underway” for what is expected to be the most exhilarating edition of the tournament to date.

Tournament Director John Ramsingh highlighted that significant “behind-the-scenes” work is currently being finalised ahead of the bowl-off in early August.

Ramsingh has assured teams that cash prizes have increased, and a key priority for the upcoming season is enhancing the spectator experience.

The tournament, which has rapidly evolved from a grassroots pastime into a premier fixture on the national sporting calendar, has received a significant boost with President Irfaan Ali’s reaffirmation of support.

Serving as the tournament’s patron, President Ali recently met with organisers at the State House to greenlight the roadmap for the upcoming season, emphasising the competition’s vital role in national unity and talent identification.

Ramsingh has promised an elevated experience for both players and fans this year, noting that cash prizes have been increased to reflect the growing prestige of the Blast.

The organising committee is focused on enhancing the spectator experience and creating an atmosphere at matches that mirrors the intensity on the pitch.

According to Ramsingh, the team is “stepping on the gas” to ensure all logistical hurdles are cleared before registration officially opens to the public soon.

To accommodate the surge in interest and the growing number of participating teams, the 2026 tournament will be contested across four primary zones: Berbice, Essequibo, East Bank/West Demerara, and Georgetown/East Coast Demerara.

Fans in Essequibo will have a double treat in 2026 by hosting their zone final and the national finals

This zonal structure is designed to manage the heavy volume of entries while maintaining the tournament’s footprint across all counties.

The standout performers from each region will then advance to the national finals, slated for mid-October.

The impact of the T10 Blast on the professional game remains one of its most compelling narratives.

President Ali highlighted Quentin Sampson’s success as a prime example of the tournament’s utility; Sampson’s transition from the tapeball circuit to the West Indies regional stage serves as a blueprint for the next generation of Guyanese cricketers.

The President noted that providing “notoriety to the nation’s best” remains a core objective of the initiative.

In a landmark shift for the fourth season, the grand finale will move to the Anna Regina National Stadium in Essequibo.

This decision aims to decentralise major sporting events, bringing the tournament’s climax to fans outside the capital.

In 2025, the tournament was a resounding success and received support from: Kares Engineering Inc, the Office of the President, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, KFC Guyana, Star Rentals, Banks DIH, ENet, Guyana Lottery Company, Regal Stationery and Computer Centre, Trophy Stall, Impressions, Avinash Contracting and Scrap Metal, Shawn’s Mini Mart, Giftland Group of Companies, Kris Jagdeo Construction Company, Montra Restaurant & Lounge, Windsor Estates, GuyOil, ANSA McAL, SuperBet Guyana, Digital Technology, Camille’s Academy, Navin and Sons Construction, Demerara Mutual Life Insurance, Continental Transportation, and Environmental & Technical Solutions.

  • IPL 2026: CSK climb out of cellar as spinners choke winless KKR

IPL 2026: CSK climb out of cellar as spinners choke winless KKR

Chennai Super Kings moved off the bottom of the table and joined a congested pack of four teams on four points by securing back-to-back victories for the first time in exactly two years.

Despite the disadvantage of losing the toss and defending a total in heavy dew, CSK maintained Kolkata Knight Riders’ winless start to the season with a disciplined 32-run clinical performance at Chepauk.

The foundation was laid by Sanju Samson, Dewald Brevis, and Ayush Mhatre, who propelled CSK to 192 on a surface that became increasingly difficult to dominate once the field spread.

The bowlers then took over, with Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed removing the dangerous duo of Finn Allen and Sunil Narine during the powerplay. After doubling KKR’s powerplay score, CSK’s spin contingent slammed the door shut, conceding just 47 runs across eight overs while picking up four crucial wickets.

For KKR, the threat of early elimination looms large. While the return of Varun Chakravarthy provided more control with the ball, their batting lineup appeared lightweight for the demands of the modern T20 game, even with the tactical shift of pushing Narine back to the top of the order.

The early exit of a struggling Ruturaj Gaikwad proved to be a blessing in disguise for the hosts, as it allowed Samson and Mhatre to capitalize on the field restrictions.

The pair took a particular liking to Vaibhav Arora, each striking a hat-trick of boundaries against him. Mhatre also launched successive sixes off Cameron Green, who struggled to find his rhythm despite some early swing.

Arora eventually gained a measure of revenge by bouncing out Mhatre at the end of the powerplay, but the damage was done; Mhatre’s 16-ball 38 had already set the tempo.

The decisive factor of the match was established early: while the teams were evenly matched in the middle overs, CSK’s 72-run powerplay dwarfed KKR’s 36. (Modified from ESPNcricinfo)

  • National Stadium prepped for $10M Nitro Kart Clash

National Stadium prepped for $10M Nitro Kart Clash

The atmosphere at the National Stadium Providence parking lot has reached a fever pitch as the venue for the highly anticipated Nitro Kart Clash opened ahead of schedule this past Sunday.

With over $10M in cash and prizes on the line, the early completion of the track serves as a significant boost for local competitors eager to master the course before the main event on April 18-19.

Transforming a massive parking lot into a professional-grade racing circuit was no small feat as organisers worked late into the night to mark, barricade, and secure the layout, successfully delivering the track a full day earlier than planned.

A spokesperson for the event emphasized the grueling labor involved, noting that the team had to sweep the area multiple times to clear debris from previous stadium events before washing the surface and meticulously laying down tire barriers.

These barriers required a dedicated process of organising, painting, and strapping together before they could be positioned to define the racing lines.

A final high-pressure wash ensured the surface was pristine and ready for high-speed action.

The response from the racing community was immediate. By 16:00 hours on Sunday, the first wave of competitors took to the asphalt, eager to test their machines on the fresh layout.

Organisers expressed pleasant surprise at the turnout, citing the early enthusiasm as a clear indicator that the Nitro Kart Klash is set to be the premier karting spectacle in Guyana’s history.

What truly levels the playing field for this event is the “clean slate” philosophy behind the new design. Unlike permanent tracks where seasoned veterans might hold a home-turf advantage, this temporary circuit forces every driver and rider to start from scratch.

Success will depend entirely on a competitor’s ability to adapt, identify the fastest lines, and develop a winning strategy within the week leading up to the race.

To facilitate this, the venue remains open daily from 15:00 to 20:00 hours, offering ample opportunity for both practice and spectator viewing.

The Nitro Kart Clash is bolstered by a heavy-hitting roster of sponsors, including Banks DIH, AJM Enterprise, KP Jagdeo General Contractors, J’s Supermarket, SCI (Sawh’s Construction Inc.), Precision Service Centre, and Ramchand’s Autobody. This corporate backing ensures a high-production experience for fans and a lucrative reward pool for the winners.

Fans can catch the preliminary action starting Saturday, with gates opening at 13:00 hours for qualifying and free runs.

The intensity peaks on Sunday, with gates opening at 08:00 hours as the official racing programme gets underway.

Admission is set at $3,000 for adults, while children under 12 can enjoy the high-octane festivities free of charge.

East Ruimveldt man succumbs days after explosion at home

Fifty-six-year-old Troy Alleyne, the man who was critically injured following an alleged gas cylinder explosion at his East Ruimveldt, Georgetown house has succumbed to his injuries.

The News Room was reliably informed that Alleyne died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Tuesday morning.

He was admitted at the hospital following the incident which left him with severe burns about his body.

According to a police report, at about 02:32h, Alleyne and his family were at their Pineapple Street and Front Road, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown house, when his wife, Melissa Alleyne, woke up and noticed a strong smell of what appeared to be gas.

She alerted him and he ventured to check where the smell was coming from.

“I seh Troy come. Tell me if is just me smelling gas or if just me nose.

“Couple seconds after all I hear ‘boom’. All I see everything red and everything moving like flame red and everything moving,” Melissa previously told reporters.

Police said the eastern side of the building reportedly collapsed and caught fire as a result of the explosion.

Public-spirited citizens responded and assisted the family, after which Alleyne was taken to the hospital.

Melissa said Troy was responsive at the time and was speaking with her. “Troy was responsive. He was talking and thing. He tell me he feeling strong and I seh Troy is weh the gas was smelling from and he said is downstairs in we kitchen, the hose did leaking,” she explained.

The Guyana Fire Service responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

The area was later processed by police ranks, and CCTV cameras in the vicinity were observed and are being reviewed as part of the investigation.

  • Temporary fuel shortage spotlights Guyana’s energy paradox

Temporary fuel shortage spotlights Guyana’s energy paradox

Despite being one of the world’s fastest-growing oil producers, Guyana this week experienced a temporary fuel shortage that left many citizens questioning how such disruptions can occur in an oil-rich nation.

On Monday, chaotic scenes were reported at several gas stations as long lines formed following supply issues. The disruption was traced to shipping and logistics delays affecting one major fuel supplier. However, by Tuesday, the situation had largely stabilised, with no significant lines observed at service stations and supplies returning to normal levels.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali assured the nation that shipments began arriving Monday night, with additional fuel expected throughout the week to meet demand. Government officials emphasised that there is no need for panic buying or hoarding, noting that the issue was a short-term logistical setback rather than a supply crisis.

Guyoil also sought to calm public concerns, urging citizens to avoid spreading misinformation and confirming that its service stations remained open and operational.

The incident has once again highlighted a key reality: although Guyana produces vast quantities of oil, it does not refine it locally.

Guyana currently produces roughly one million barrels of oil per day, primarily from offshore operations in the Stabroek Block. However, this production is in the form of crude oil, which cannot be used directly in vehicles or for everyday consumption.

Crude oil must first be processed at a refinery into usable products such as gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. Guyana currently imports these refined fuels, making the country vulnerable to shipping delays, supply chain disruptions, and global market fluctuations.

Efforts to address this gap have been under discussion for years. While Guyana has explored the possibility of building its own oil refinery, no such facility has yet been established.

Instead, the government is now actively exploring regional solutions. President Ali recently indicated that Guyana is in talks with Trinidad and Tobago to potentially refine its crude there, utilising that country’s existing—though underutilised—refining infrastructure.

Such a move would mark a shift from Guyana’s current “export-only” model toward a more integrated regional energy system, allowing the country to derive greater value from its resources while improving energy security.

At the same time, Guyana is advancing its flagship Gas-to-Energy Project, which is expected to significantly transform the domestic energy landscape once it comes on stream.

The project will bring natural gas from offshore fields to shore, where it will be used to generate electricity and support industrial development. While it is not designed to produce transportation fuels like gasoline, it is expected to reduce electricity costs and lessen dependence on imported fuels for power generation.

Until such infrastructure is fully operational, Guyana will remain dependent on imported refined products—even as oil production continues to surge.

  • Caribbean Airlines raises ticket costs amid global fuel price surge

Caribbean Airlines raises ticket costs amid global fuel price surge

Caribbean Airlines (CAL) has introduced a new fuel surcharge on all regional and international tickets, effective for purchases made on or after April 10, 2026.

The surcharge ranges from US$15 to US$25 per sector, depending on the route, and will appear in the taxes and fees portion of ticket prices.

Passengers who purchased tickets before April 10 will not be affected, and domestic flights operating solely between Trinidad and Tobago are fully exempt from the new fee.

The airline was clear that base fares remain unchanged — but with the surcharge added, travellers across the Caribbean and beyond will be paying more overall. CAL stated the charge is designed to offset only a portion of its rising operational costs, with the airline continuing to absorb a significant share to cushion the financial impact on passengers.

The move comes as global jet fuel prices have skyrocketed amid the ongoing US-Israel-Iran geopolitical conflict. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), average jet fuel prices surged to US$195.19 per barrel by end of March 2026 — a staggering 96.4 per cent jump from US$99.40 just a month earlier. Fuel now accounts for approximately 50% of airline operating costs, nearly double the typical 27%.

CAL is not alone. Major international carriers including Air India, Air France-KLM, British Airways, Emirates, and WestJet have rolled out similar surcharges, while at least five US carriers — including American Airlines and Alaska Airlines — have raised baggage fees by US$10. Caribbean Airlines confirmed no decision has been made on baggage fee increases, though it continues to review its cost structure.

    • Fuel surcharge of US$15–US$25 per sector applies to all regional and international tickets purchased on or after April 10, 2026 • Domestic Trinidad and Tobago flights are exempt from the surcharge • Tickets purchased before April 10 are not affected • CAL’s base fares remain unchanged; surcharge appears in taxes and fees • Global jet fuel prices rose 96.4% to US$195.19 per barrel by end of March 2026 • Jet fuel now accounts for 50% of airline operating costs, up from the typical 27% • CAL says it will continue absorbing a significant portion of fuel costs • CAL confirmed no decision has been made on baggage fee increases.
