Briggs Senior Light champion to pocket G$1M at lucrative Nitro Kart Klash

With the clock ticking to the highly anticipated Nitro Kart Klash 2026, organisers have released the prize money structure per class, with over G$10 million in cash and prizes up for grabs.

The April 18-19 event, set for the National Stadium, Providence, parking lot, will see not only the winners of the final pocketing cash, but also the top three finishers across the two heats securing cash prizes.

The biggest winners on the night are the Briggs and Stratton Senior Light class, where the winner of each of the two heats will pocket G$500,000 each, representing the largest payout in karting history locally.

Second and third place in the heat will take G$100,000 and G$50,000, respectively. For the final, G$1M will be awarded to the winner, with G$200,000 and G$100,000 for second and third.

“This [Briggs and Stratton senior lights] class is one of the classes where we saw a large field of competitors with close racing action, and now, we are offering that attractive cash payday, which we think will make the racing even more competitive.”

“We decided to payout cash prizes for the heat because we understand the nature of the sport. A competitor can genuinely have a good heat and then have kart troubles moving forward, and we want to encourage competitors to still make an effort to continue the weekend of activity.”

Overall, this is the largest possible payout for karting in Guyana and maybe in the Caribbean because we want to set the tone not only for Guyana but for the Caribbean moving forward. It is our vision in time to come to have competitors from all across the region coming here, which will, in turn, lift the standard of the sport here.”

For the Honda GX200 class, heat one and two will see the winner pocket G$150,000 each with G$50,000 for second and G$30,000 for third, while the top three in the final will earn G$300,00, G$100,000 and G$65,000 respectively.

This will be the same for the structure Briggs and Stratton Senior Heavy class, as well as the Supermoto Senior 250cc bike class and the Time Attack open class.

For the Super-moto JNR class, the two heats will attract a prize structure in kind equal to G$50,000, G$25,000 and G$20,000 respectively, with the final top three getting G$100,000, G$50,000 and G$25,000 respectively.

The IAME X30 class will see G$100,000, G$40,000 and G$25,000 being distributed for each of the two heats, with G$200,000 going to the winner and second and third place finishers getting G$80,000 and G$50,000.

The Briggs Cadet, Briggs Female and Briggs Junior will see the winner of each of the two heats getting G$200,000, with second and third place getting G$75,000 and G$50,000 respectively, while in the final, the split of G$400,000, G$150,000 and G$100,000 for first to third.

The Briggs Over-35 Rookies will see G$125,000 being awarded to the winners of the first two heats, with the second and third place finishers getting G$30,000 and G$20,000 respectively, with the final having a G$250,000, G$65,000 and G$35,000 split across the top three.

The race for electric scooters will see the winner of both heats pocketing G$50,000 each, while second and third place finishers will get G$25,000 and G$20,000 each. In the final, G$100,000 is up for grabs with G$50,000 for second and G$25,000 for third. Meanwhile, organisers have confirmed that the event is a family-friendly setting with several other attractions planned.

“We have a kids zone planned for the weekend as well. So it isn’t just about the karting and the super moto; we are considering the Nitro Kart Clash, a family affair. We are going to have the bouncy castle, trampoline and an entire village dedicated to the kids.”

“So we encourage all the competitors and even those just coming to spectate to bring their families out because it is geared towards good, clean fun.”

The event has the support of Banks DIH, AJM Enterprise, KP Jagdeo General Contractors, J’s Supermarket, SCI (Sawh’s Construction Inc.), Precision Service Centre, and Ramchand’s Autobody.

Gates open at 08:00h with racing action set to begin at 10:00h on Sunday. Children under 12 are free, with admission pegged at G$3000 for adults. There are also VIP options for fans.

  • ‘Gold is Money’ lay down marker on dramatic opening night of Guinness Street Football

‘Gold is Money’ lay down marker on dramatic opening night of Guinness Street Football

The National Cultural Centre tarmac was treated to a masterclass of street football as the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship burst into life, with heavyweights Gold is Money delivering a statement of intent on a night defined by clinical finishing and high-stakes drama.

While many of the evening’s contests were settled by the narrowest of margins, Gold is Money showed no such interest in a close affair.

They dismantled Stevedore 5-0 in a ruthless display of attacking prowess, asserting themselves as the team to beat in the early stages of the competition.

The tone for the tournament was set in the very first match, as Island All-Stars held their nerve to overcome Alexander Village.

After a breathless 2-2 draw in regulation time, the All-Stars triumphed 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout.

It was a recurring theme throughout the evening. Sparta Boss, often the benchmark for street football in the city, found themselves frustrated by a disciplined East Bank Ballers outfit.

After a scoreless stalemate, the perennial contenders relied on a solitary penalty conversion to scrape through 1-0 and keep their campaign on track. East Coast All-Stars similarly required the lottery of spot-kicks to see off Make it Happen after their clash ended 1-1.

Elsewhere, Tiger Bay looked sharp in a -1 victory over Rising Stars, while Festival City produced one of the night’s most polished performances, brushing aside Sophia All-Stars 3-0.

In a much tighter tactical battle, Team Immaculate did just enough to edge California Square 1-0.

    Upcoming Fixtures (April 17)

19:00h: Bent Street B vs Unity Ballers

    19:30h: Corinthians vs Team Cruel

20:00h: Gaza Squad vs Laing Avenue

    20:30h: North Ruimveldt vs Z-Tekk

    21:00h: Albouystown vs Young Stars

21:30h: North East La Penitence vs K-town All-Stars

    22:00h: Leopold vs Kingston

22:30h: National All-Stars vs Team Madrid

  • Eppinger pitches local jobs, long-term commitment in Guyana expansion plans

Eppinger pitches local jobs, long-term commitment in Guyana expansion plans

German investor Christopher Eppinger is positioning his entry into Guyana’s fast-growing economy as more than just another foreign investment play, assuring that his company’s success will depend heavily on creating local employment, building capacity and embedding itself within communities, particularly in hinterland regions.

In an exclusive interview with Fueled on Thursday, Eppinger, 31, outlined plans for his company, Petrichor Energy, to invest tens of millions of US dollars in Guyana, starting with a quarry project. But while his background as a trader who profited from Russian oil markets has drawn international attention, he insisted his focus in Guyana is fundamentally different.

“A core priority for us is creating opportunities for local communities,” Eppinger said, noting that many of the company’s operations are expected to be based in hinterland areas. “This is essential to building a sustainable and successful business in Guyana.”

Eppinger stressed that Petrichor’s model will rely heavily on hiring and working with Guyanese, particularly those living near project sites.

“We want to use local forces living close to the quarry to start working with us together and develop these opportunities,” he said, adding that economic benefits must be felt directly by communities rather than remaining concentrated at the corporate level.

He acknowledged that profitability is part of any private investment but argued that reinvestment is key.

“Every investment needs to make a little bit of a profit, but as long as the profits are going to be reinvested into the country, it’s a win-win situation for everyone,” he said.

Beyond immediate employment, Eppinger said Petrichor is placing significant emphasis on training and long-term capacity building.

“We are committed to training and developing local talent so that, over time, the operation can be largely supported and led by Guyanese professionals,” he explained. “This is about building long-term capacity, not short-term employment.”

The company’s first major venture—a quarry project expected to require an investment of around US$30 million—aims to supply aggregates for Guyana’s booming construction and infrastructure sectors.

Eppinger pointed to the country’s visible transformation, from road upgrades to large-scale construction in Georgetown, as evidence of demand.

“You’re seeing roads being developed, hotels going up, everything starting very fast,” he said. “This is something you see nowhere else in the world.”

He also highlighted the current reliance on imported aggregates, arguing that local production could reduce costs and support national development.

“Guyana has the resources in its own hands. It should make these available for the country to grow,” he said.

Addressing concerns often raised about foreign investors in resource-rich economies, Eppinger pushed back against the idea that Petrichor’s operations would be exploitative.

“We are coming in completely greenfield,” he said, explaining that the company plans to build operations from scratch, including equipment, processing, and transport systems.

He added that Petrichor is working with local legal partners Cameron and Shepherd to secure licences and ensure full compliance with Guyanese laws and regulations.

Looking beyond the quarry, Eppinger said Petrichor is exploring additional opportunities but will proceed cautiously.

He also emphasised that the company intends to operate in line with international environmental and social standards, a critical issue as Guyana balances rapid development with environmental protection.

  • Youth-led Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central expands reach with community, regional initiatives

Youth-led Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central expands reach with community, regional initiatives

The Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central is expanding its footprint as a youth-led organisation focused on community service and sustainable development, with initiatives reaching more than 150 beneficiaries across Guyana, its president said.

Harrinarine Balram, speaking in a recent interview, said the club’s work is guided by its alignment with Rotary International and an integrated model that combines community outreach, professional development and international collaboration.

“At the heart of what we do is impact that is both immediate and sustainable,” Balram said, pointing to flagship programmes “Touch of Care” and “Pivot to Period Equity,” which provide essential supplies while promoting health awareness and education.

The club has also used regional platforms to strengthen ties across the Caribbean, including activities during World Rotaract Week and the “LEAD Across the Waves” initiative, which brought together young leaders to exchange ideas and build leadership capacity.

“These moments of collaboration build the kind of regional unity and leadership capacity that Rotaract stands for,” Balram said, adding that the recent commissioning of a new Interact Club marked a step forward in youth engagement at the secondary school level.

Beyond community outreach, the organisation is investing in skills development through programmes such as “Mind Your Business” and its participation in “Project Elevate,” a U.S. Youth Ambassadors-supported initiative aimed at equipping young people with financial literacy, conflict resolution and leadership skills.

“Our focus is on practical tools that translate into long-term growth for our members and the communities we serve,” Balram said.

He credited the club’s Finance Committee with ensuring the sustainability of its programmes through fundraising efforts, including a recent snack box initiative that generated funds for care packages and outreach activities.

“Through this effort, we were able to support underserved communities in a consistent and meaningful way,” he said.

Balram said continued support from members and sponsors would be critical to maintaining the club’s momentum.

“Our work would not be possible without the unwavering dedication of our members and the generous support of our sponsors,” he added (Press release)

  • Over 200 mining blocks to be allocated in Region One over two weeks

Over 200 mining blocks to be allocated in Region One over two weeks

More than 200 mining blocks are set to be allocated to small miners in Region One (Barima-Waini) over the next two weeks, as the government ramps up efforts to expand access to the mining sector and boost economic activity.

Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, made the announcement on Wednesday during the opening session of a mining lottery at the Matthews Ridge Community Centre.

“This week and next week alone we will be allotting over 110 plots or mining concessions to small miners, Guyanese miners because one of the main criteria for being eligible for this lottery is that you must be Guyanese,” Bharrat said.

The exercise forms part of a series of lotteries being held from April 15–17 and April 22–24.

The initiative, organised by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), will see significant land distribution to small-scale miners.

On Wednesday, 75 small miners from Region One were each awarded 50-acre plots.

Bharrat explained that the system allows miners to remain active even if their initial plots do not yield results.

“Part of it states that if you go on the property and there is no real sign of mineralization, you come back to GGMC, you relinquish, you give up that plot of land and they now will allocate you another plot of 50 acres…or if you are working the land and you are satisfied that you have worked out the land…then you come back to GGMC again…saying you are seeking an alternative and they will give you an alternative.”

“So the intention is to give those 75 persons in mining one way or the other,” he explained.

According to Bharrat, the initiative is also opening doors for new entrants to the sector. “One of the lottery is limited to miners who have never had any mining concession claims or blocks, so the 75 persons who will be allocated today (Wednesday) will be first time land owners…that is the commitment that I spoke of,” he said.

Interest has been high, with 128 applications received, the majority from Region One. Another lottery scheduled for next week will benefit an additional 30 miners from the region.

“It shows that our people are interested, that you want to get into the sector that you want to be part of development of our country,” he said said.

As allocations continue across the two-week period, Bharrat also urged miners to operate responsibly.

“When you mine, please mine with the environment in mind….we have no issue of people mining but it should not be of a detriment of others,” Bharrat said.

  • Guyana renews call for justice for Palestine, immediate end to Gaza blockade

Guyana renews call for justice for Palestine, immediate end to Gaza blockade

Guyana has renewed its call for an immediate surge in humanitarian aid to Gaza and the lifting of Israel’s blockade, with Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud warning that armed conflicts such as the war in Palestine are disproportionately devastating women and girls.

Addressing the second meeting of the Group of Parliaments in Support of Palestine at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Türkiye on Wednesday, Dr. Persaud said the escalating violence in Gaza is part of a wider global pattern in which women and girls bear the heaviest burden of war.

“With increased armed conflict in the world, more women and girls are killed, raped, starved, dehumanised and treated to the worst indignities,” Dr. Persaud said.

Dr. Persaud linked the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza to the broader fight for justice, dignity and gender equality. She described the crisis in Palestine as one of the gravest humanitarian failures of modern times, saying that since October 7, 2023, the devastation in Gaza has become “one of the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophes.”

“The collapse of basic services and the weaponisation of aid are unimaginable circumstances for modern civilization.

“The Palestinian people deserve an end to the brutal occupation that has frustrated the realisation of their aspirations to a higher standard of life,” Dr Persaud said.

Reaffirming Guyana’s longstanding support for Palestinian self-determination, Dr. Persaud said Guyana remains committed to a two-state solution and has consistently backed United Nations resolutions calling for peace and justice for Palestine. Guyana formally recognised the State of Palestine in 2011 and has repeatedly advocated for Palestinian statehood in international forums.

Drawing a parallel between Palestine and Guyana’s own policies on justice and protection, Dr. Persaud said access to justice is central to achieving equality, especially for women affected by violence. She highlighted Guyana’s recent reforms, including the 2024 Family Violence Act, expanded sexual offences legislation, specialised courts, digital reporting systems, and Hope and Justice Centres that provide survivors with legal, medical and psychosocial support.

She stressed that women’s empowerment must remain central in conflict and post-conflict recovery, noting that economic independence is a key pillar of security. Dr. Persaud was joined at the meeting by Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Kwame McCoy and Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir, as Guyana reaffirmed its commitment to international efforts for a just and lasting peace in Palestine.
