President, Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali accompanied by NAREI’s Chief Executive Officer, Jagnarine Singh on Thursday toured the farm where he was informed on the various operations. The nursery has a capacity of producing 100,000 crops; and as of now, 25,000 crops are being grown. By next week, the full capacity of 100,000 will be achieved.

Crops that are being grown include different varieties of lettuce, pak choi and some 15 high-end herbs that will be supplied to the various restaurants and hotels in Guyana. These include basil, thyme, mustard, and chai among others.

“The intention of this facility is to build additional facilities like this one to meet the entire Caribbean needs for these crops … [we could] export from here and then the next phase is to do the modern aquaculture tanks, “President Ali disclosed while conducting a walk-a-bout at the hydroponics farm.

Youths informed the head of state that the facility is utilising a nutrient film technique, meaning the crops use a nutrient solution to grow, cutting the need for fertilisers.

Additionally, the environment is pest-free, making the crops 100 per cent organic. These cutting-edge technologies are being integrated by the government into the local agriculture system, to increase food production, achieve food security and cut the more than US$5 billion import bill by the Caribbean region.

The Essequibo Coast and the Lower Essequibo are seeing the development of new tourism products and the expansion and improvement of existing ones.

A notable project being conducted is the ‘The Discover Essequibo Circuit Development Project’ that aims to promote the Essequibo Coast and Bartica as tourist destinations in Guyana.

Additionally, new hotels and tourist attractions have made the region a destination for all visiting the country. Recently a motorcross park was opened at Mainstay on the Essequibo Coast and it was already utilised for motor racing, kickstarting the plans to decentralize the sport from one base.

Soon a new stadium will be constructed at Anna Regina and President Ali said these are all investments to ensure that the Essequibo Coast is a major tourism hub.

“Now that we are going to have this stadium in Essequibo, I am in final discussions and negotiations with the West Indies Cricket Board for Guyana to host the Super 50 one day tournament here in Guyana next year and we want at least 40 per cent of those matches played in Essequibo,” the President said.

Mr. Subraj said he isn’t a man of many words and said but asked the Education Ministry and school administration to use the school well.

There are several multipurpose classrooms, a special oil and gas classroom and laboratory, a recreation hall and administrative offices. These facilities are meant to help hundreds of students get much-needed technical training.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali said modern facilities like this centre are necessary to help transform education locally. For him, many more Guyanese need to be trained in technical skills including those required for new and emerging fields like artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

“We have to deal with AI and robotics in an aggressive way.

“… If we don’t incorporate that at this time, we will be playing catch up all the time,” the President said.

Minister of Education Priya Manickchand said Mr. Subraj’s contribution is one that will help get many more Guyanese equipped and capable of contributing to the country’s development.

“That kind of investment in the people of your country or the children of your country could never really be valued.

“… It is immeasurable, the investment you made here,” Manickchand said.

Importantly, she said the Education Ministry is establishing six other new technical training facilities across the country.

“It’s a great achievement for example the money that was going to rent it could always come in to do something else […] it can even be additional savings for my kids for their future for their studies,” Mr. Nazir explained.

Meanwhile, young Malica Moore expressed her satisfaction at the government’s commitment to promoting homeownership for young professionals like herself. She eagerly looks forward to occupying her new residence.

The Hampshire Housing Scheme is already fully equipped with essential utilities, including electricity and water, and has benefited from first-phase infrastructure development, such as access roads, drainage, and culverts.
