‘Guymati’- Guyana’s first aromatic rice variety launched

In another bold step to cultivate a competitive rice industry in Guyana, the Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Agriculture, on Tuesday launched the ‘Guymati’ (GRDB-19) aromatic rice variety.

With initial research commencing in 1997, scientists attached to the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) have worked tirelessly to develop a variety that can withstand the climatic and other conditions present in Guyana, which would usually pose a challenge to the optimal productivity of aromatic varieties.

While speaking at the launch, Agriculture Minister Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha noted that, over the years, the government’s investment has been a major driver of growth and stability in the rice sector, focusing on supporting farmers, improving production, and expanding exports. He further stated that, in 2025, rice production in Guyana reached a record high of 810,299 metric tonnes, with yields of 6.6 tonnes per hectare, also the highest ever recorded.

“From 1997 to 2025, we’ve released eighteen (18) rice varieties, which have significantly increased national productivity, from 4.0 tonnes per hectare in 2005 to an average of 6.6 tonnes per hectare in 2025. We are now targeting production of eight tonnes per hectare. These developments show that we are not stagnant. Every time we launch a new variety, its characteristics are better than any variety we would have released before. This aromatic variety that we are launching today has even more potential. It is high-yielding and will attract preferential prices. It has the potential to improve your livelihoods because, as farmers, you depend on this industry,” he said.

Minister Mustapha said that, with its extra-long slender grain, this aromatic variety is classified as a premium product.

“This variety is blast-resistant and has tolerance to lodging. It requires the same cultivation and agronomic practices as the other GRDB rice varieties and, therefore, will not require any additional cost of production. Not many countries in the world have achieved this, so it is a remarkable accomplishment by our scientists. Today, we thank our Chief Scientist and the GRDB team for their dedication to the rice industry,” Minister Mustapha explained.

Minister Mustapha also said that while the government is working to increase rice production, farmers are also being empowered to diversify. He challenged farmers to work with the ministry to dedicate small acreages for the production of high-value crops.

“While we are encouraging you and making the resources and infrastructure available for diversification, let us look at ways in which you, as rice farmers, can diversify. Today, as Minister of Agriculture, I am challenging you to dedicate at least two acres for diversification. I will instruct the GRDB and NAREI to work with you to develop high-value crops that will be lucrative and for which you will have markets. For instance, look at what we are doing with onions. If we plant two hundred acres of onions, we will be self-sufficient. In 2022, we imported $2.6 billion in high-value crops like carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and bell peppers,” he explained.

GRDB’s Chief Scientist and plant breeder, Dr. Mahendra Persaud, said that while traditional aromatic varieties have lower yields, the Guymati has recorded yields of between six and eight tonnes per hectare. He explained that in developing this variety, producing a higher-priced rice with improved nutritional value were among the targeted outcomes set by the Board.

“We were looking for higher-priced rice, rice with better nutrition, and so on. The aromatic variety is a higher-priced rice and has very good quality. It is among the best quality rice on the international market. But when you ask why many countries are not producing it, you have to take into account that it is not easy to develop an aromatic rice variety that performs well in a particular environment. In 2010, we started this journey with this particular aromatic variety. From 2010 to 2017, we developed a lot of breeding material. From 2017 to 2026, we conducted extensive field testing and studied all the traits. To date, we have conducted over one hundred trials across the country, including more than thirty current trials ranging from one acre to thirty acres. While traditional aromatic varieties have lower yields, the Guymati has recorded between six and eight tonnes per hectare. The variety does not lodge easily, and its grain quality is excellent, with extra-long grains—longer than the Jasmine type but slightly shorter than the Basmati type. The variety also has the added advantage of withstanding delayed harvesting, which is important for many farmers,” he explained.

Dr. Persaud also noted that this variety has one of the strongest aromas in the world and can compete with any aromatic varieties produced globally.

This development marks a significant step in rice production in Guyana, as aromatic rice is considered a high-value commodity that can provide farmers with greater profitability due to low supply and high market demand.

Furthermore, the GRDB-19 aromatic variety requires the same cultivation and agronomic practices as other GRDB rice varieties and will therefore not incur any additional cost of production. (Ministry of Agriculture press release)

  • ERC commemorates Int’l Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination

ERC commemorates Int’l Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination

See below the full release from the ERC:

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) hosted a commemorative event on Monday, March 23, 2026, at the Umana Yana, marking the observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination alongside another anniversary since the life of the new Commission was reconstituted in 2023.

It is noteworthy that both observances fall on March 21; however, the event was convened on March 23 to facilitate broader participation and engagement among stakeholders.

The event brought together members of the diplomatic community, government officials, opposition parliamentarians, international partners, fellow Commissioners and key stakeholders to reflect on progress made in promoting harmony and to reaffirm a shared commitment to eliminating racial discrimination in all its forms.

Delivering the opening remarks, Chairman of the ERC, Shaikh Moeenul Hack, underscored the importance of sustained national effort in fostering unity and social cohesion. “Guyana’s diversity remains one of our greatest strengths, but it requires deliberate and continuous effort to ensure it is preserved as a unifying force. Harmony cannot be left to chance, it must be actively cultivated, protected, and reflected in how we engage with one another each day.”

He noted further that “the fight against racial discrimination is not confined to history; it is a present and ongoing responsibility. If we are to meaningfully address it, we must move beyond reaction to prevention, shaping attitudes through education, dialogue, and especially the engagement of our young people. Ultimately, this responsibility does not rest with institutions alone, but with every citizen, in the choices we make to promote respect, understanding, and unity.”

Providing the international perspective, Her Excellency Jean Njeri Kamau, United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator to Guyana, highlighted the global significance of the observance and the continued relevance of collective action in addressing racial discrimination. She posited that the “UN remains committed to working alongside the government and people of Guyana to advance non discrimination, equality and inclusion underlying the 2030 agenda of sustainable development.”

Her Excellency underscored the far-reaching and often damaging impact of social media, noting that while it serves as a powerful tool for connection, it can also amplify division and harmful narratives if left unchecked. She emphasized the need for sustained and meaningful engagement through continuous dialogue, active listening, and the creation of safe, inclusive spaces where diverse voices can be heard and respected. In this regard, she reiterated the importance of advancing inclusive policies and collective action as essential measures in addressing and ultimately eliminating racial discrimination.

A key highlight of the programme was a Harmony Club presentation by students of Stella Maris Primary School. As a pioneering school in the Commission’s Harmony Club initiative, the students delivered a symbolic unity exercise that reflected the values of inclusion, respect, and shared identity, reinforcing the importance of nurturing these principles from an early age.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira delivered remarks.

The feature address was delivered by the Honourable Gail Teixeira, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, who underscored the national importance of strengthening inclusive practices and safeguarding social harmony.

In her remarks, the Minister reflected on the meaningful progress Guyana has made in addressing racial discrimination, while acknowledging that continued effort is required to further advance equity and inclusion. She emphasized that Guyana’s longstanding tradition of multiculturalism and religious tolerance remains a defining strength, urging that it be both valued and strengthened through honest reflection and collective responsibility. As she noted, “We must not denigrate the way we live as a people; we must look for where there are positives and where there are weaknesses to be able to correct them.”

According to the Minister, the state has instituted a range of national initiatives that serve as systemic measures to address inequality and promote inclusive development. Some of the measures she highlighted include expanded access to education through scholarships and free education up to the tertiary level, targeted programmes supporting women’s economic empowerment, financial assistance for schoolchildren, large-scale housing initiatives, and strategic investments in hinterland communities. She noted that these initiatives continue to expand access to education, healthcare, potable water, and economic opportunities, contributing to the broader national objective of fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and socially cohesive Guyana.

The programme also featured a cultural presentation by the National School of Dance, whose performance creatively depicted the diversity of Guyana’s six peoples and the interconnectedness of cultural expressions across communities.

Master of Ceremonies for the programme, Commissioner Neaz Subhan, emphasized the central role of education in advancing social cohesion, noting that “at the Ethnic Relations Commission, we firmly believe that education brings understanding, understanding brings appreciation, and appreciation fosters tolerance.

He further highlighted the collective responsibility required to fulfil the Commission’s constitutional mandate, observing that while the ERC comprises ten Commissioners, the success of its work depends on the active participation of every citizen. In this regard, he underscored that the Commission’s mission is closely aligned with the aspirations of the Guyanese people, i.e. to build a peaceful, harmonious, and unified society, and reaffirmed the Commission’s continued commitment to advancing these principles in its work.

Voll’s maiden T20I century leads Australia to 3-0 whitewash of West Indies

Georgia Voll plundered her maiden T20I century off 52 balls as Australia secured a 3-0 series whitewash over West Indies with a dominant performance before rain arrived.

Voll put together a masterful innings which included six sixes as Australia piled up 211, their highest T20I total since 2023 and fifth-best ever, and she joined Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy as century-makers for them in the format.

The next-highest score was Sophie Molineux’s 25 off 12 balls at No. 8 as Australia’s captain played her first part with bat or ball in the series.

Once again, West Indies struggled in the powerplay losing three wickets, including a first in T20Is for left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton, and were miles behind the DLS target when rained arrived shortly after drinks.

The tour now shifts into ODI mode with a three-match series in St Kitts starting on Friday. (ESPNcricinfo)

  • Defense lawyers insist, no second blood test for ‘dengue positive’ Azruddin Mohamed

Defense lawyers insist, no second blood test for ‘dengue positive’ Azruddin Mohamed

Dr. Kawal Dalip appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Tuesday afternoon, confirming that he diagnosed Azruddin Mohamed with dengue and issued 12 days’ sick leave, but his testimony sparked sharp exchanges in court.

Dalip told the court he clinically diagnosed Mohamed based on symptoms and later relied on lab results from his own facility, stating the 12-day rest period was a maximum, with a reassessment expected after about 10 days.

He maintained that Mohamed’s condition, along with prescribed medication, would prevent him from appearing even via Zoom due to drowsiness.

However, Prosecutor Glen Hanoman pointed to what he described as “red flags,” questioning the timing of the diagnosis and lab work. He noted inconsistencies, including that the blood sample was reportedly taken around 11:50 a.m. while a dengue diagnosis was indicated earlier, and argued it was “impossible” to confirm dengue before testing.

Hanoman also challenged the reliability of the results, suggesting the lab work may not have belonged to Mohamed because of an accompanied positive sickle cell test and highlighting that the test was not PCR-based. Dalip later described the result as a “false positive,” while still maintaining his diagnosis.

Further contention arose over the recommended sick leave, with Hanoman stating dengue cases typically require three to five days’ rest, while Dalip insisted it should be up to 14 days. The proceedings grew tense at times, with the doctor forceful in his responses and frequently speaking over questions, while defence attorneys objected to the line of questioning.

Magistrate Latchman clarified that the doctor was not under formal examination but that the court was seeking clarity.

It was also revealed that the blood sample was collected by Dalip’s employee, Joel Semple. The prosecution requested that Mohamed undergo an independent test at another lab, but defence attorney Roysdale Forde firmly rejected the suggestion, insisting the original lab was certified and that no new blood test would be taken.

Despite the concerns raised, the magistrate accepted the medical report. The matter was adjourned to April 7 to 10.

A 43-year-old businessman was assaulted and robbed during an armed home invasion early Tuesday morning at Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara.

Police Headquarters reported that the robbery occurred at about 01:40 hrs and was committed against the businessman and a 27-year-old female administrative worker, both of whom were at home at the time.
