In maintaining the unique features of the school, the famous green area where the school’s lavish garden parties are held had to be considered before construction was greenlighted.

On July 9, 2018 the demolition started and there was an initial construction deadline of 19 months. But after several issues, the original contractor was replaced by Shandong Dejian International in September 2021.

This, Education Minister Priya Manickchand said, caused the students who entered the school in 2017 to endure having a dilapidated building.

Without a fully equipped auditorium, concerts and other cultural activities could not be properly conducted but were maintained to some extent; this fact was bemoaned by the Education Minister.

“They [students enrolled during the construction period] will never be able to recount the concerts that they saw in the hall…or the place that they gained their confidence or played steel pan or exhibited any other talent.

“Schools are far more than places to learn about Math and English and Social Studies and Science.

“We have to have common spaces,” the Education Minister said.

The new facility provides these students with those spaces.

Also, noting the significance of the St Rose’s Ursiline convent of the school, Minister Manickchand thanked the convent for its role in building the country.

“I want you to know how very grateful we are as a country for your input not only here at St Rose’s.

“The nuns who gave up their lives not only to religious advances but to education and medicine. Our country is richer for your presence,” she stated.

According to the Ambassador, China has been working globally to build communities with a shared future in areas including cyber space, nuclear security, maritime affairs and health care.

Noting that Guyana has embarked on a “fast” developmental track, the Ambassador pledged that China will continue to contribute to the transformation and development of Guyana.

“…Guyana demonstrate strong interest in the areas of climate change and food security.

“China is willing to work with Guyana…to deepen mutual political trust, strengthen economic and trade cooperation, enhance civilian exchanges so as to jointly promote multinationalism, safeguard international fairness and justice and make new contribution to the peace and development of the world,” the Ambassador said.

Meanwhile, in his remarks, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said the relations between the two countries have created opportunities for economic growth, commerce and investment in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture and education.

In particular, he pointed out the support provided in the health sector, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

And going forward, the Prime Minister said Guyana hopes that it can rely on China to support its effort to preserve its sovernity and territorial integrity in the face of Venezuela’s claim to two thirds of its territory.

“The last 170 years of the arrival of Chinese immigrants in Guyana have paved the way for the robust ties that currently exists and we are truly appreciative of the contributions made by our Chinese brothers and sisters to our country’s development,” the Prime Minister Phillips said.

He added: “Guyana looks forward to expanding cooperation and partnership with China.

“We also look forward to collaborating on food, energy and climate security issues that are key to global sustainable development.”

“Firefighters went into action, and using one jet via an open water source, they extinguished the fire,” the GFS said.

The house was owned by 51-year-old Anita Deosarrian. She lived there with her family of three.

The building and its content were destroyed in the fire.

The Fire Service found that an electrical transformer overheated, causing the fire.

“The fire broke out after an electrical transformer overheated resulting in arcing and sparking.

“The transformer subsequently ignited and came into contact with nearby combustible materials,” the GFS said.

In addition to the educational sessions provided, participants who have the required field experience will also have the chance to write an exam administered by the GGMC on Saturday in order to obtain a blasters’ licence.

Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Vickram Bharrat, who opened the three day specialized course, commended the partnership among Orica, the Ministry, the Mining School and the GGMC. He expressed that the need for experienced locally trained blasters has exponentially increased, and expressed gratitude to Mr. Devindra Kissoon for hosting the blasting training program in Guyana, who over the last few decades has been working closely with the Ministry to increase local blasting expertise.

He also congratulated the participants, expressing that the training of Guyanese professional blasters aligns with the Ministry’s local content objectives and the Government’s development and growth strategy. He encouraged participants to pursue certification as a means to better themselves and Guyana as a whole.

Almost 100 persons were in attendance. Orica is the largest explosives provider in the world, headquartered in Australia with over 13,000 employees, and has, been providing explosives to Guyana over the last forty years.
