Leading cross-platform media website, Jamaicans.com has partnered with GroceryListJamaica.com. Through the partnership, Jamaicans living anywhere in the world can now shop for their friends and family in Jamaica directly from the Grocery List Jamaica banner on the homepage of the Jamaicans.com website.
Shopping Online and on Demand
The ordering system provided by GroceryListJamaica.com allows customers in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom to shop online on an on-demand basis for food, household items, and personal care products for their loved ones back home. GroceryListJamaica’s website sends customer orders to personal shoppers stationed at partner supermarkets in Jamaica. These shoppers fulfill the orders for in-store pickup at or delivery from the local island stores. The process operates in real time, with same-day shopping deliveries facilitated via a shared economy model.
Origin of The Concept
COO of Grocery List Jamaica, Jermain Morgan said the idea for the South Florida-based firm arose when his business partner struggled to find a better and easier way to aid his ailing mother in Jamaica. He wanted to find some way to shop for her, getting her items to her directly, rather than sending money and making her shop for herself. With Grocery List Jamaica, customers choose items on the website and check out with a date, time, and location. Once a vetted personal shopper in Jamaica receives a notification of the order on their phone, they go to the local store chosen by the customer and do the shopping, with same-day deliveries an available option. The process is similar to food delivery apps popular in the United States.
Creates Local Jobs
By using Grocery List Jamaica, customers have the satisfaction of knowing they are creating jobs in their homeland and that they are effectively spending their money at local stores in Jamaica. Just by buying groceries, customers provide work for its over 700 shopping and delivery partners in Jamaica. This raises revenues for local businesses and helps them hire even more Jamaicans. Using Grocery List Jamaica also helps Jamaicans consume healthy, local products.
Secure Shopping is a Priority
Grocery List Jamaica puts its customers’ privacy and protection above all and uses Stripe, an advanced and safe gateway provider of global online payment processing to guard against credit card fraud. Stripe is trusted by thousands of businesses worldwide and allows Grocery List Jamaica to accept payments via credit card in a safe and seamless way. There is no downside to the shopping process: buyers can safely purchase favorite products for loved ones even though they are miles away and help the local Jamaican economy at the same time.
In what is being described as a revolutionizing of remittance services, mobile top-up provider, Ding has partnered with GiftMe Jamaica to launch digital gift cards which allows Jamaicans living abroad to support family and friends in Jamaica with essential goods and services. A recent survey by Ding highlights the diaspora’s strong desire for expanded services, with grocery gift cards, utility bill payments, restaurant gift cards, and occasional gifts topping the list of sought-after options. The heart of the partnership lies in purposeful remittance, providing gift cards that truly make a difference in recipients’ lives. With Ding and GiftMe’s instant gift card delivery, Jamaicans living abroad can choose from a wide range of options on Ding, providing recipients in Jamaica with the power to redeem gift cards at top local brands. We spoke with the Senior Brand Manager at Ding, Hannah Brotherton to gain further insights about the new gift card service.
What’s the big advantage for the Jamaican diaspora with this approach compared to the usual remittance methods?
Unlike traditional remittance, Ding’s e-card solution offers a swift, secure, and hassle-free alternative for supporting family and friends in Jamaica. The solution is the first, and only way to send controlled financial support. Senders can provide valuable assistance without worrying about how recipients spend the money, enabling instant access to the goods and services they most need. Importantly, the receiver doesn’t need to do anything either. The e-cards are sent directly to their mobile phones, meaning all they must do is go in store to redeem against the value sent. There’s no need to stand in a long queue or go out of their way for a cash pick up.
How exactly does the instant gift card delivery work, and which brands and services can people in Jamaica access right away?
Once the sender has purchased the online gift card, they’ll receive a link within the Ding app or website, and via SMS which can be shared with the receiver. We’re working with some of the biggest brands in Jamaica, so whether you want to support on their utilities through JPS or the National Water Commission, or treat them to an Island Grill meal, pay for groceries with Progressive Grocers, or support with their medical expenses through Fontana Pharmacy, we’ve got coverage on the biggest brands in Jamaica.
Let’s talk about how Ding is ensuring that the financial support is controlled for the recipients. Can you walk us through how that works?
The sender selects the merchant that they want to send a value for. For example, the sender might want to send some support for their groceries. The sender would simply go online or to the Ding app, head to the gift cards selection and pick, for example ‘Progressive Grocers’. From here, the sender can select the amount they want to send and purchase an e-card for that value. The e-card will be created instantly, and all the sender must do is share the secure link with the receiver. From there, the receiver simply needs to go in store, do their shopping, and share their link with the cashier, who will be able to take payment for their groceries via this secure and unique code. Because the sender has selected Progressive, the code will only work for that merchant, meaning the value transferred, can only be redeemed for it’s intended purpose.
How did this collaboration with GiftMe Jamaica come about?
GiftMe and Ding came together through a shared mission to empower diaspora communities to support their loved ones back home in a meaningful and purposeful way. Through Ding’s market leading position in top-up and GiftMe’s vast merchant distribution network island wide, the partnership enabled both parties to revolutionize remittance methods for the Jamaican diaspora. GiftMe’s partnership with Ding allowed them to give their merchants a direct access to the lucrative diaspora market, also. We’re also working closely with GiftMe to scale our coverage and we’re constantly updating the brands available.
In your view, how is this partnership going to change the game when it comes to remittance for the Jamaican diaspora?
In the words of our CEO, ‘We are delighted to announce this groundbreaking partnership with GiftMe Jamaica. Together, we are empowering the diaspora community to support their loved ones back home in a meaningful and purposeful way. By providing instant, controlled, and efficient financial support, we are making a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals’.

JetBlue has been plying the Guyana route since December 2020 and with Georgetown now one of its ‘Blue Cities’ the airline is looking to give back.
A new project will see the issue of mental health being addressed in conjunction with efforts employed by the Government of Guyana and the United States embassy in Georgetown.
And so, JetBlue is embarking on a charitable service mission to Guyana from September 26 through 30t, 2023; they intend to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of many Guyanese.
The JetBlue African Diaspora Experience (JADE), a Crewmember Resource Group founded in 2017, is spearheading the project.
They run one of the airline’s signature programs, conducting service trips in support of Blue Cities.
Launched last year in Jamaica, the airline was keen on selecting Guyana for its 2023 location.
The News Room recently spoke with Jevon Squires, a Guyanese who works as a Logistics Coordinator with JetBlue. He proposed the project last year and it was accepted by management.
“When I wrote this proposal, I wanted to create a series of programs that would benefit Guyanese youths and citizens at large while allowing JetBlue to honor its social responsibility in giving back and promoting one of its Core values; Caring, both in the air and on the ground,” he said.
The first event is a wellness expo with a focus on mental health at the University of Guyana on September 29 beginning at 10hrs.
The JetBlue team has acknowledged that the Government of Guyana has been doing impactful work on mental health and said the aim of the Expo is to bring heightened awareness to the resources the country already provides through the Ministry of Health and other organizations.
JetBlue will also be introducing additional tools in helping to create change while normalizing conversations about mental health and overall well-being.
“The expo promises to add a different approach in dealing with many mental health-related issues, bringing engagements through interaction, incorporating wellness activities, healthy food vendors, a mural affirmation activity, games, and fun incentives,” Squires explained.
Guests can take advantage of free health screening, see on-site counselors and engage in a Q&A session with an expert panelist.
The Mental Wellness Expo was planned in conjunction with the University’s 60th Anniversary.
The team will also be conducting a mobile fair in Region 10 on the morning of September 29 at the New SilverCity Secondary School, with several other local high schools invited.
Students will have a chance to hear from a panel of JetBlue Crewmembers who span various work groups (pilots and flight attendants, technical operations, engineering, IT/data, legal etc.) and learn about their career journey within aviation.
The United States Embassy will also be joining the discussion on Education USA – a network that promotes U.S. higher education to students around the world by offering accurate, comprehensive, and current information about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States.
The trip concludes with a friendly cricket match between JetBlue crew members and a local team (Malteeno Cricket Club) sponsored by JetBlue JADE on Saturday, September 30 at 10 am. This event is open to the public with spectators having the opportunity to win some tickets to a JetBlue destination.
“JetBlue has this slogan that says, inspiring humanity, and I took it a little further and added to it: Inspiring Humanity across the seas.
“I love my Country and JetBlue has such an influential presence in the Guyanese market and it is truly amazing to see a company that I work for give back to a place not just me but that many of its crewmembers still call home,” Squires added.
The CFPA’s Chief Executive Officer Reverend Patricia Sheerattan-Bisnauth explained that some men police the bodies of women. She also noted that there is a fairly common belief that women seek contraceptives because they intend on being promiscuous.
“Women say to us that even now, they have to put their (contraceptive) pills in vitamin bottles,” she lamented.
She believes women shouldn’t be denied access to contraceptives and responsible parenthood should be practised across genders.
If more men are educated, not just on vasectomies, but in other ways they can support women and help promote planned parents, both Dr. Nunes and Reverend Sheerattan-Bisnauth believe that there can be fewer unplanned pregnancies and women can be better supported.
