“The Commissioner of Police and the Ministry of Legal Affairs with the technology people, are working together in not only designing the law but crafting a system which we will have to engage the judiciary. Once we get our concept and design clear, whereby we will be issuing traffic tickets electronically using cameras that are installed across the country,.

“….They (errant drivers) will be required to pay those tickets at Magistrates’ offices throughout the country where manually those tickets are being paid now,” the Attorney General said on Wednesday.

In simpler terms, just as the drivers receive those tickets electronically, it is expected that they will pay the fines incurred electronically as well.

This isn’t a far off goal for the local judiciary.

Already, digital notice boards (called e-notice boards) are in place at courts in Georgetown and around the country.

Tagman Technology, a local information technology company, is working alongside the judiciary to implement a system that would facilitate online payments to the courts.

Tagman Technology Consultant, Alex Graham on Wednesday said Magistrates’ Courts should soon be able to accept digital payments for maintenance and affiliation in the coming weeks. Eventually, bail and other payments can be made online.

According to a statement from Police Headquarters, the river mishap occurred at about 20:40hrs at a waterfall in the Mazaruni River, Region Seven.

The police said investigations revealed that Shojhi Roberts, a 32-year-old Ranger of Isseneru Village, Middle Mazaruni, borrowed the village’s wooden Balahoo boat and left with Rasta and another man who was identified as Mark Benn.

They were headed to Apaiqua Landing.

It was disclosed that while navigating the river near a waterfall in the area, the boat collided with a rock, causing the occupants to be flung out of the boat and into the river.

The boat sank.

Roberts and Benn managed to swim to shore, however, Rasta was not seen.

An alarm was raised and efforts to find the man proved futile.

The matter was reported to the Police and ranks, and villagers formed a search party which is presently ongoing for the missing person.  Roberts is in Police custody as the investigation continues.

Beyond resolving spacing concerns, she noted that the new edifice is part of efforts to provide improved access to justice.

It is for that reason probation and social services, domestic violence support and the drug treatment court services will all be offered at this facility. There are designated rooms for these services.

Further, the court’s services, starting with its notices, are being digitised. Soon, there will be digital records available and persons would be able to make payments online.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC highlighted that the government supports the judiciary’s efforts to improve access to justice. As such, funds were made available to construct this facility and many others like it.

“…This certainly is not an isolated edifice and investment,” he said.

He also noted that the government is creating an enabling framework to allow for legal services to be delivered more efficiently. That includes crafting and passing new legislation to accommodate digital services.

Notably, on August 14, 20 children from Canaan Children’s Home in Port Mourant had their eyes screened and tested at Optique Vision Care through the First Lady’s initiative.

According to the First Lady, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China has been a massive supporter and continues to respond to the needs of her Office and the nation. The exercise is also symbolic as Guyana and China are celebrating 30 years of the Chinese medical services programme here.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan said that the team of doctors is part of the medical services that offer support to Guyana’s health sector.

“Last year, the embassy supported three orphanages and we will continue to support two this year and make some contributions to other projects.

“This year marks the 30^th anniversary of Chinese medical service in Guyana. We have provided only high level medical service at hospitals but also traveled frequently to remote areas to provide free medical services to people,” Ambassador Haiyan said.

She also praised the Office of the First Lady for initiatives that cater to the needs of the nation’s children. As such, the embassy made an added contribution during Wednesday’s exercise.

The orphanages and homes that benefitted in Wednesday’s exercise are the Hope Children’s Home, Shaheed’s Boys Home, Joshua’s Children Centre, Ruimveldt Children Home, Bless the Children Home, Prabhu Sharan, St John’s Bosco, and the Red Cross Convalescence.
