  • Boos during Ramadan pause ‘disappointing’- Leeds United

Boos during Ramadan pause ‘disappointing’- Leeds United

Leeds United have said loud boos during a brief pause in play to allow players observing Ramadan to break their fast in Saturday’s match at Elland Road were “disappointing”.

In the 13th minute of the 17:30 GMT kick-off in the Premier League, players from Leeds and visitors Manchester City came to the side of the pitch to take in fluids and energy supplements.

But there was a cacophony of jeers and whistles throughout the break which lasted about a minute.

Leeds did not comment on the matter when contacted by BBC Sport on Saturday.

Comments under Leeds‘ Instagram posts from the weekend have been inundated with messages about Ramadan and the reaction of supporters to the break.

It is understood a number of fans have emailed the club expressing their anger at the lack of public response from the club, with one saying they were “deeply disturbed” and “embarrassed” by what took place.

In a generic email reply sent by Leeds‘ supporter liaison officer, seen by BBC Sport, it said: “The club is aware of the incident and it was disappointing that some supporters chose to boo during the pause in play to allow players observing Ramadan to break their fast.

“The club is currently looking into why this happened and what can be done moving forwards to prevent incidents of a similar nature happening again in the future.”

Leeds manager Daniel Farke was asked about the matter in his pre-match news conference before Tuesday’s Premier League game against Sunderland at Elland Road (19:30).

“To be honest, if it was really disrespectful in these terms because of the break, then you have to say we all have to learn out of this,” he said.

“During the game, it was not my feeling because it was a surprise for everyone that there was this little break.”

A similar pause might take place during the second half of Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Norwich City at Elland Road and Leeds are aiming to provide information on it beforehand. (BBC)

  • The months of planning behind US-Israeli mission to target Iran’s supreme leader

The months of planning behind US-Israeli mission to target Iran’s supreme leader

BBC News – The attack that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came not in the middle of the night, as might have been expected, but in the middle of the morning.

That was because the US and Israel decided to take advantage of a piece of crucial intelligence that had arrived hours before.

For months, they had been watching for a moment of opportunity when senior Iranian figures might be meeting and they learnt Khamenei was going to be at a compound in central Tehran on Saturday morning.

They also had a fix on the location of other senior military and intelligence figures meeting at the same time.

For months the US and Israel had been tracking the supreme leader’s movements. The exact methods they used are secret although US President Donald Trump in a social media post did hint at them.

“He was unable to avoid our intelligence and highly sophisticated tracking systems.”

This could have been a human source reporting back but it may be more likely to be technical tracking of Iranian individuals.

In the 12-day war last June, Israel targeted scientists and officials linked to Iran’s nuclear programme and was reported to have been using penetration of telecoms and mobile phone systems to understand the movement of individuals.

That included sometimes tracking the movements of bodyguards who were linked to key officials.

Over the long term, this can help build up a “pattern of life” to predict and understand activity as well as search for moments of vulnerability.

Iran knew the supreme leader was in the sights of its enemies and so the failure to identify and deal with these vulnerabilities in the intervening months suggests a deep failure for Iranian security and counterintelligence or else the ability of Israel and the US to continue to adapt their methods to find new ways of tracking.

The Iranians may also have calculated that a daylight attack was less likely.

In this case the intelligence, the New York Times says, came from the CIA but was passed on to Israel to carry out the actual strike.

The signs are that there is a division of labour with Israel focusing on strikes to hit leadership targets and the US more on military targets.

Crucially the intelligence provided enough forward notice of the supreme leader’s movements and those of other officials to be able to plan an attack using jets which could fire long-range missiles.

Rather than a single decapitation strike, the plan was for this attack to signal the launch of a wider campaign and it was moved forward to take advantage of the window of opportunity.

It can take around two hours for Israeli jets to reach Tehran but it is not clear how far off they fired their munitions.

When the decision was taken, Israeli jets are reported to have used 30 bombs to attack the compound around 09:40 local time.

This may have been because the supreme leader was still using an underground bunker below the compound for his protection (though not reportedly some of the deepest that the regime has).

Multiple munitions may have been needed to burrow deep enough to be sure of striking the target.

Other sites in the Iranian capital were also hit, including the office of President Masoud Pezeshkian who later put out a statement and said he was safe.

Three senior Iranian defence officials have been confirmed dead by Iran, including Defence Council secretary Ali Shamkhani, Defence Minister Brig Gen Aziz Nasirzadeh and IRGC commander Gen Mohammad Pakpour.

When the jets stuck, it was the middle of night at Mar-a-Lago in Florida where President Trump had gathered along with some of his top officials to monitor events.

It would take hours before confirmation came that the supreme leader had been killed.

Iran had been prepared for this possibility though, with reports that the plans for succession for not just Khamenei, but also an array of senior officials had been put in place.

That means it is not yet clear what the killing will mean for the course of this conflict.

  • T20 World Cup: West Indies knocked out as India seal semi-final spot

T20 World Cup: West Indies knocked out as India seal semi-final spot

India secured a T20 World Cup semi-final showdown with England after a tense five-wicket victory over West Indies thanks to Sanju Samson’s scintillating unbeaten 97.

Samson produced a chanceless knock off 50 balls – hitting 12 fours and four sixes – as India chased down 196 in a thrilling winner-takes-all encounter to round off the Super 8 stage at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The tournament co-hosts’ triumph ensured they claimed the runners-up spot in Group 1 behind South Africa which sealed a meeting with Group 2 winners England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (13:30 GMT).

India had never chased more than 173 to win a World Cup match in the 20-over format, and were indebted to Samson’s level-headed approach.

Tilak Varma’s 27 off 15 balls was the next highest score by an India batter which underlined the composed manner in which Samson held together India’s reply.

Fittingly, Samson was there at the end to hit the winning runs – striking a six and then a four off Romario Shepherd to get India over the line with four balls to spare.

Earlier, India had been sloppy in the field after they had inserted West Indies which had allowed their opponents to post a competitive total.

There was tetchiness and a few cross words as India dropped three catches – Abhishek Sharma guilty of one particularly poor fumble – and a missed run-out chance.

Roston Chase was unexpectedly handed an opening slot and provided stability with his measured aggression – top-scoring with 40 off 25 – to help West Indies reach 102-1 before Jasprit Bumrah put the brakes on.

Bumrah outfoxed Chase with a slower ball then snared Shimron Hetmyer, West Indies’ standout batter in the tournament, for 27 with a delivery which angled across and took a thin edge as the left-hander tried to hit across the line.

Rovman Powell and Jason Holder reignited the innings with unbeaten knocks of 34 and 37 to help West Indies reach 195-4 but it did not prove to be enough once Samson settled in. (BBC)

  • Armed bandits rob Rose Hall Town Supermarket

Armed bandits rob Rose Hall Town Supermarket

Three masked bandits armed with firearms targeted the G. Sudhai and Son supermarket in Rose Hall Town on Saturday evening.

In an interview with reporters, Gurudat Sudhai, the owner, recounted the harrowing incident, explaining that around 19:05 hours, while he, his wife and staff assisted customers, the intruders entered the store brandishing two AK-47 rifles and a shotgun. He said the bandits demanded that everyone inside lay on the floor, with one of the assailants pointing a gun at him as he complied.

Sudhai stated that initially, the robbers tried to obtain cash by taking the cashier’s keys, but they struggled to open the drawer. According to Sudhai, they forcibly pulled his wife to open the cash register after which they managed to escape with an estimated $1.7M in daily sales via a back street.

Despite searching the belongings of the four customers present, Sudhai stated that the bandits did not steal anything from them. The entire ordeal was brief, lasting roughly four minutes.

Sudhai also noted that his son and daughter were in the family residence on the upper floor of the store during the incident.

“It was very scary. These men came with guns. My family is very traumatised, and we are very scared. Is like we don’t have any protection as a business. I really wish someone could look into this and get to the bottom of it,’’ the distraught businessman revealed.

According to Sudhai, the robbery was reported to the Rose Hall Town Police Station, and an investigation is underway.

Due to the level of competition among businesses in the Township, Sudhai expressed that he is currently unable to afford hiring a security guard.

Just a week prior, another robbery occurred when three armed individuals entered the yard of Shanie’s Grocery and Off-License Liquor Store, on Lot 75 Reef section, while it was closed. They robbed Steven Ramsingh of cash and made off with his cousin’s vehicle, a black fielder wagon.
