GBF unveils preparation plans for 3×3 debut at Commonwealth Games

The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) has officially outlined a comprehensive, performance-driven preparation plan ahead of the country’s historic participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games 3×3 Basketball competition, set for July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Guyana will be joined by fellow Caribbean nations, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, along with Singapore, Kenya, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Fiji, host nation Scotland, and Nigeria in the men’s competition.

The country’s qualification marks the nation’s first-ever appearance in basketball at a major multi-sport event of this magnitude, a milestone achievement that the Federation has described as being of national significance.

The GBF’s structured roadmap details a phased approach designed to ensure the team is tactically sharp, physically conditioned and internationally competitive by the time they take the court in Scotland.

The technical team will be led by Head Coach Kidani Brutus, with Rawle Toney serving as Technical Delegate.

Phase One of preparation runs from April 8–15 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and will culminate in a 10-team invitational tournament.

The shortlisted players, who will be announced shortly by the GBF, will assemble on April 8 for orientation and medical screening, followed by intensive tactical and conditioning sessions on April 9 and 10, with emphasis placed on 3×3 systems and game simulations.

On April 11, the Federation will stage a 10-team tournament, serving as a high-performance evaluation platform, with statistical analysis and technical assessments guiding the final selection process.

Training resumes April 12–13, before the final six-member squad for the Commonwealth Games is announced on April 13.

Following team selection, Phase Two shifts focus to international exposure. The GBF will identify appropriate FIBA 3×3 Quest and Lite Quest tournaments to increase competitive rhythm and secure valuable ranking points.

Participation in regional and international events will be prioritised to ensure the team enters the Commonwealth Games battle-tested and tactically refined.

According to the GBF, the Commonwealth Games appearance marks Guyana’s first basketball representation at the Games, a major milestone for national sport development, a platform to elevate the profile of 3×3 basketball locally, and an opportunity to inspire the next generation of athletes.

With just months remaining before competition tips off in Glasgow, the GBF has described early financial and administrative support as critical to executing a high-performance programme befitting the country’s historic qualification.

  • MODEC Tertiary Football: Essequibo and Mahaicony march into last four after quarter-final drama

MODEC Tertiary Football: Essequibo and Mahaicony march into last four after quarter-final drama

The inaugural MODEC Tertiary Education Football Tournament has its final four after a weekend of high-stakes quarter-final action.

Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI) and Mahaicony Technical Institute (MTI) were the weekend’s biggest winners, securing their semi-final berths alongside New Amsterdam and Upper Corentyne.

The weekend’s most dramatic scenes unfolded at the Queen’s College Ground, where Mahaicony Technical Institute pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory against Linden Technical Institute (LTI).

Linden appeared to be cruising after Dexter Milo scored in the 16th minute. However, a two-minute blitz changed the complexion of the game. Omar Williams (33’) and Yohance Francis (35’) struck in quick succession to stun the Lindeners and seal a 2-1 win.

In the afternoon’s other fixture at QC, Essequibo (ETI) ended the University of Guyana’s (UG) Turkeyen Campus campaign with a disciplined 2-0 win. Goals from Jamaal Smith and Deangelo Davidson ensured ETI’s title charge remains on track.

Earlier in the weekend, the action in New Amsterdam saw the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) cause the upset of the round. They dismantled the Government Technical Institute (GTI) 3-1, thanks largely to an Amare Caesar brace and a clinical strike from Dane Singh.

Meanwhile, Upper Corentyne (UCITC) made short work of Port Mourant Technical Centre in a 3-0 rout. Matthew Doris was the star of the show, netting twice in the second half to kill off any hopes of a Port Mourant fightback.

The semi-finals are scheduled for March 5, while the final is on March 8.

The champion team is guaranteed G$300,000, the runner-up G$200,000, the third G$100,000, and the fourth G$50,000.

    Semi-Final Draw:

    • New Amsterdam Technical Institute vs. Essequibo Technical Institute
    • Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre vs. Mahaicony Technical Institute

  • Inaugural ‘Nitro Kart Klash’ set for March 29 in Georgetown

Inaugural ‘Nitro Kart Klash’ set for March 29 in Georgetown

The 555 Speedway go-kart track at Albert Street and Thomas Lands will be transformed into a battleground on March 29 when Jumbo Jet Events and the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) collaborate to stage the first-ever Nitro Kart Klash.

Dubbed ‘War on Wheels’, this event, set to start at 14:00h, is set to re-ignite the development of go-kart racing in Guyana, creating an avenue for rookies as well as professional drivers to showcase and develop their skills.

On Monday, newly-elected president of the GMR&&SC Mohamad Shairaz Roshandin, Technical Advisor Stefan Jeffrey, Jumbo Jet Events representative Andre Rochford and Chief Steward Phillip Paruag shared with the media details of the event.

One of the highlights is the introduction of the budget-friendly Briggs and Stratton Series to Guyana through a partnership between Jeffrey and his cousin Kristian Jeffrey as a means of paying it forward.

The racing classes on the day are:

    • Briggs and Stratton (sealed engine) for both Heavy and Light weight classes for Seniors, as well as the Juniors (13-15 years) and Cadet (6-12)
    • 200c Honda Four-Stroke Promotors class as well as a light class
    • 125cc IAME Two-Stroke Heavy and Light Two-stroke
    • Under-12 60cc IAME
    • Time attack Open (Five Laps)
    • 555 Speedway Rental Karts race
    • Super-Moto 250cc bikes

Stefan Jeffrey said: “We’re pretty excited to bring this class (Briggs and Stratton) to Guyana. It is one that has been very successful in North America, being one of the biggest kart classes that is currently competing. Some events see in upwards of 600 competitors in this particular class in the different age groups.”

In 2009, Briggs and Stratton introduced the LO206 engine package with the aim of revitalising grassroots motorsport by offering a low-cost option for persons looking to enter the sport at a competitive level.

“It was about bringing the barrier to entry a little bit lower into the sport. At the end of the day, it’s still motor-racing, it still involves money, but with this class it is designed to get a lot more people in the sport by being budget-friendly,” S. Jeffrey explained.

Roshandin was elated to welcome the Nitro Kart Klash event, adding further diversity to the existing GMR&SC calendar of events for 2026.

“I’m very excited to see what this karting event will bring to the motor-racing,” Roshandin said.

The GMR&SC head related that karting has been the foundation for most of the international racers, and this is a step in the right direction for Guyana in its quest to develop professional competitors.

Rochford announced that Jumbo Jet Events will transform the venue by adding amenities, including covered elevated bleachers, elevated VVIP deck and designated access for karts and pit crews.

Works will also be done on the track itself to enhance competitiveness, Rochford added.

Rochford further pointed out that Nitro Kart Klash is not a one-off endeavour- there will be four such events in 2026 with the final one open to foreign competitors.

Chief Steward Paruag said safety, fairness and strict adherence to the rules will be among his key focus on race day. He said officials will be tasked with ensuring competitors are in compliance with rules that govern their respective class.

Boxing nursery shines at GBA developmental tournament in Berbice

The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) staged an exciting developmental tournament on March 28 at the Rose Hall Primary School Tarmac, combining competitive youth action with a heartfelt tribute to longtime boxing contributor Gregory ‘Chassis’ Cort.

The event formed part of the Association’s ongoing grassroots drive to strengthen amateur boxing across Guyana, while recognising Cort’s invaluable contributions to the sport over the years.

Before the opening bell, special acknowledgement was given to Cort for his dedication and service. A consistent supporter of youth programmes and developmental initiatives, he has played a pivotal role in nurturing young talent and promoting discipline, structure and opportunity through boxing.

The tournament featured 10 scheduled bouts and attracted fighters from Harpy Eagle Boxing Gym (HEBG), Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), Pace and Power Boxing Gym (P&P), and New Amsterdam Boxing Academy (NABA).

In the opening contest, Abu Barker (HEBG) dominated gym mate Ragheen Alexis, sweeping all three rounds in their 20-23kg clash.

Omar Morris (HEBG) followed with a narrow but deserved victory over Nathon Sugrim in the 26-29kg division, winning two of the three rounds.

Richard Da Silva (HEBG) delivered a polished performance to outclass Imotex Vanderstoop (ALBG), while the scheduled bout between Junior Madray (ALBG) and Kellon Mullin (HEBG) was cancelled after Mullin failed his pre-fight medical examination.

Dellon Andrews (HEBG) impressed with a second-round stoppage of Terique Venture (HEBG), prompting the referee to halt the contest.

Ishmeal Ramsaroop (P&P) secured a first-round victory over Malachi Samuels (P&P), and Itavius Vanderstoop (ALBG) produced a similar stoppage win against Travolta Harris (HEBG).

Curtis McDonald (NABA) and Lennox Lawrence (ALBG) went the distance in one of the day’s more competitive bouts, with McDonald earning the nod on the judges’ scorecards.

Ken Harvey (ALBG) reinforced his reputation as one of the Caribbean’s promising young punchers, stopping Emmanuel Sandiford (P&P) in the second round.

To close the programme, Simeon Hamer (ALBG) outclassed Terron Wintz (NABA) over the scheduled distance.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Richard Da Silva (U-15), Itavius Vanderstoop (U-17) and Ken Harvey (U-19) were named Best Boxers in their respective categories. Harpy Eagle Boxing Gym claimed the Best Gym award, with Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym finishing as runner-up.

‘A deeply disappointing outcome’- GFF reacts to Guyana’s disqualification from Concacaf Men’s U-20 Qualifiers

The Guyana Football Federation on Monday evening said while it accepts the decision of the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee to disqualify Guyana from the Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship, it “represents a deeply disappointing outcome to what had been a promising campaign for our Under-20 programme.”

Guyana and Anguilla have been disqualified from the Under-20 competition, following a ruling from the Disciplinary Committee of the regional football body.

In their Group D game on Saturday in Curacao, players from the two nations were involved in an on-field altercation in the 86th minute, forcing an end to the contest with Guyana leading 5-0.

According to the ruling from the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee, the remaining matches for Guyana and Anguilla will be recorded as 3-0 forfeits in favour of their respective opponents.

Additionally, there will be the imposition of undisclosed fines, and four-match suspensions to specific players from both nations.

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has received the final ruling of the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee concerning the matter arising from the physical altercation involving Guyana and Anguilla Under-20 players during their match on 28 February 2026 at Stadion Rignaal Jean Francisca.

The Committee has ruled that Guyana is disqualified from further participation in the tournament.

The GFF accepts the decision of the Disciplinary Committee. This represents a deeply disappointing outcome to what had been a promising campaign for our Under-20 programme.

Having carefully reviewed the recording in our possession of the altercation, the Federation has concluded that the incident was neither provoked nor instigated by our players.

Notwithstanding this finding, the GFF maintains its unwavering expectation of the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and respect for the game from all staff and players at all times.

National teams representing Guyana on international campaigns carry a heightened responsibility to serve as exemplary ambassadors for the National Federation and our Country. We must acknowledge that, in this instance, some of our players did not live up to that expectation.

We will learn from this experience and undertake a comprehensive review to determine what additional measures can be implemented to better prepare our players and staff to manage challenging situations of this nature in the future.

Guyana, Anguilla disqualified from Concacaf Men’s U-20 competition following on-field altercation

Guyana and Anguilla have been disqualified from the Concacaf Men’s Under-20 competition, following a ruling from the Disciplinary Committee of the regional football body.

Below is a full statement issued by Concacaf

The Concacaf Disciplinary Committee has imposed sanctions on the Men’s Under-20 National Teams of the Anguilla Football Association and Guyana Football Federation, as well as several of their players, following incidents that occurred during their Concacaf U-20 Qualifiers match on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

After reviewing the evidence and documentation gathered during its investigation, and in accordance with the applicable Disciplinary Code, the Committee has declared the match a forfeit in favour of Guyana.

This decision was taken after Anguilla received five red cards, leaving the team with fewer players than the minimum required under Laws of the Game to continue the match. As a result, the 5-0 score in favour of Guyana stands.

Furthermore, the Committee has disqualified both teams from the competition, with their remaining matches to be recorded as 3-0 forfeits in favour of their respective opponents, imposed undisclosed fines, and issued the following four-match suspensions to players from both teams:

Anguilla: Keondre Belle, Keante Brooks, Shemor Browne, Khalique Jackson, and Cardinae Rennie

Guyana: Mateo Clark, Shaquan David, Sheldon Kendall, and Max Robinson

The suspended players must each serve their four-match suspensions during the following official matches of their representative team in the same age group in a Concacaf or FIFA competition.

Where the suspension cannot be served in the same age group, they will be carried over to the next highest age category in a Concacaf or FIFA competition.

  • Over 3,000 to sign agreements of sale in seven new housing areas

Over 3,000 to sign agreements of sale in seven new housing areas

More than 3,000 persons are expected to sign agreements of sale and begin processing their certificates of title within the next two months, as the Ministry of Housing moves to advance ownership in seven new housing areas.

Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, announced on Monday that the initiative will benefit allottees in Regions Three, Four, and Six, marking what he described as a major push toward strengthening home ownership.

The seven areas identified are #75 Village, #76 Village, Lusignan Phase One, Lusignan Phase Two, Good Hope Phase Two, Vriesland, and Laurentia Caterina.

The process has already begun in several locations.

At Lusignan Phase One, approximately 350 persons were called to commence signing. In Berbice, 150 persons from #75 Village and another 300 from #76 Village were contacted to begin formalising ownership.

Additionally, 500 persons from Lusignan Phase Two are scheduled for signing on March 7 and 14, while 300 persons from Good Hope Phase Two (eastern portion) were called in on March 12 and 15.

Croal explained that over a two-and-a-half-month period, the ministry will ensure that more than 3,000 allottees across these seven areas move closer to full ownership.

He noted that the government has invested more than $38.5 billion in infrastructure works in these areas to ensure accessibility and readiness for development.

“… To make it accessible for the persons to be able to access their lands.

“So all of these persons…for the areas I have mentioned can be able to see their land and from the dates I mentioned, henceforth they can sign for their agreement of sale as well as their certificate of title,” Croal said.

Croal urged allottees to remain patient, emphasising that home ownership is not just about land.

“It is to ensure that persons can have ownership, that they can be able to have opportunities to build their own home, and that is part of our focus,” he said.
