Police arrest man accused of beating mother of one to death
Fisherman Shivnand Henry, 29, was arrested by the police hours after he is accused of beating his partner to death.
According to the Guyana Police Force, Shivnanand Henry was arrested one day after the incident occurred.
“The murder suspect was just arrested,” the Public Relations Officer Mark Ramotar confirmed.Henry is being held in custody after a 48-year-old mother of one died Sunday morning following reports of being brutally beaten by him during an argument at their Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD) home.
Dead is Bibi Naseefa Baksh.
Police Headquarters said the incident occurred between 04:30hrs and 05:30hrs.
Reports are that Baksh and Henry shared a relationship and were living together with the suspect’s 61-year-old mother and Baksh’s 12-year-old daughter.
According to the Police, the couple would frequently fight and argue.
Police said the couple was imbibing when the argument erupted.
During the process, Police said Henry started to beat Baksh.
“…Kicking her down wooden stairs and dragging her to the roadway, where he dealt her several kicks and lashes with a piece of wood about her body,” Police explained.
Afterwards, Police said Baksh was assisted into the house and taken to her room by the suspect and her daughter.
Shortly after, she was observed motionless on her bed.
There were wounds to her forehead, shoulder, arms and knees.
The suspect left the house and went in an unknown direction.
An alarm was raised by Baksh’s daughter and the Police were summoned.
Baksh’s body was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted soon.
Minister Benn urges Prison Officers to balance security with humanity
See the full statement from the Guyana Prison Service below:Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn on Monday reminded Prison Officers stationed at the Prison Headquarters of the important role they play in maintaining law and order.In delivering the charge to the officers at the Director of Prisons’ quarterly muster and general inspection of officers, Minister Benn called on them to balance security and control with humanity and justice in the execution of their duties.“We must remind ourselves of the mission of the Guyana Prison Service which is to ensure that the prisoners you keep remain in custody and that there are no break outs and things of that nature, maintaining order, control, discipline and a safe environment for yourself and prisoners is important because when you do that, you are maintaining a safer environment for the entire country, and when you do that, there are benefits … it has very far reaching effects,” the Minister said.Acknowledging the number of resources available, the Minister encouraged the Prison Officers to play a meaningful role in helping to reform prisoners and preparing them for return to their communities as positive contributors to the development of society.Meanwhile, Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot urged the officers to adopt methods to execute their duties with more expertise, accountability, and change.Mr. Elliot stressed that there is a need to review the current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) practised in prisons, which contributed towards some failures of recent.Under the theme, ‘Promoting Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Prisoners’, Elliot stated that the Prison Service has a duty to give inmates the skills necessary to make it easier for them to reintegrate into society.He further explained that an aim of the prison is to assist the inmates in realizing their errors and improving themselves as people.Acting Deputy Director of Prisons and Head of the Staff Training Department, Kevin Pilgrim, emphasised the necessity for careful selection and thorough training, which are key for the crucial public service as prison staff.To date some 309 Prison Officers completed 65 courses during the first half of 2023.The ranks were trained by internal and external facilitators, and among the completed courses were: Prison Management, Human Rights and Supervisory Management.Mr. Pilgrim said “Based on the current budgetary allocations for training, same has been utilised to ensure that staff are exposed to not only institutional training but at the technical level so that they can offer more support and guidance to prisoners.”Additionally, 250 ranks have been identified for further training for the second half of the year.

Harris Paints Limited Guyana donated some 30 gallons of paint and other painting supplies including brushes, trays and rollers for the Helping Hands Volunteers to assist Food For the Poor Guyana Inc in uplifting the facility.
Senior Manager of Gifts and Kind Food for the Poor, Jimeel Davis, who oversaw the renovations said that they were very pleased with the performance of the paint; it applied well, dried fast and had low scent which was important for the health of residents.
They also remarked it covered very well with one coat and only applied the second as it is the recommended standard practice.
Food for the Poor is an organisation which emerged in 1982 when Ferdinand Mahfood was inspired to serve God in a more intimate and committed way. He devoted his experience in business to be a ‘beggar for the poor’.

With the charitable donations raised, he started a chain of giving, that today results in relief projects and programs in Guyana and more than two dozen countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Retail Services Manager of Harris Paints Guyana, Nigel Dodson said that he was happy to be on board with Food for the Poor for this project.
“It was a delight to be able to partner with this exceptional charity, and give back to those in need, especially the elderly, many of whom have already given so much to their community,” Dodson said.
Prices for meat, eggs remain affordable at major markets

Accordingly, commodity prices for root crops, vegetables, fruits, meats, and other goods continue to be reasonable in the main marketplaces nationwide.
In relation to prices for meat and eggs at various markets last week, the average market price for beef stood at $633.33 per pound. A pound of beef is being sold for $680 at Stabroek, $650 at Bourda, $700 at Mon Repos, and $600 at Rosignol Markets.

Meanwhile, the average price for local chicken per pound is $476. Consumers can purchase a pound of local chicken for $500 at Stabroek, $460 at Bourda, $480 at Mon Repos, $360 at Bath Settlement, and $340 at Rosignol Markets.
To lessen its reliance on importing hatching eggs, the government plans to create a bio-secured small ruminant breeding plant and invest in a broiler breeder facility.
A local white egg is being sold for $45 at Stabroek, Bath Settlement, and Bourda. Also, if you are purchasing from the Mon Repos or Skeldon Markerts, the egg is being sold for $47.

Consumers can buy pork for $580 per pound at Mon Repos and Stabroek Markets, and $350 at Bourda, and $700 at Rosignol Markets. The average pork price is $582 per pound.
A pound of mutton is being sold for $1,350 and $1,500 at Stabroek, and Mon Repos Markets respectively.
Meanwhile, the President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali – led Government continues to hold nationwide discussions with Guyanese to provide immediate relief to the populace.

Love Languages Speak When Spouses Listen….Five Ways
My all time favorite program to watch is Bushcraft. I find it very interesting to watch those men and women camping in the mountains, many times off the grid, fending for themselves by being creative. It is something I am still trying to convince Michelle to let us try, although I know it may never happen. Michelle loves the outdoors but not that type of outdoors. She sticks to on shore fishing and basketball. I have come to love those two also but I have a great desire to take the outdoors to another level by going camping. Maybe one day I will convince her to join me.
The style of living that these campers display never ceases to amaze me. The part most challenging for me is how they keep the WATER TANK FILLED as they spend nights and days in isolated areas where sometimes only a small stream runs. I never get to see how they are able to keep those TANKS FILLED with water. Water is most necessary for survival and they find a way to keep it FILLED.
Every husband and wife has a TANK inside of them that needs constant FILLING. Whenever my LOVE TANK runs dry or empty, I find it hard to survive the challenges in my marriage and I am sure this goes for every married couple. My primary love language is quality time. I love to spend uninterrupted time with Michelle. Just the same Michelle’s primary love language is Acts Of Service. Michelle thrives greatly in the marriage when I serve her up some tea at nights. It has become our thing where I make tea for her at nights and we sit in the couch and spend quality time together just chatting about any and everything. The sad thing is that many couples have empty LOVE TANKS because one or both couple fail to recognize the need to have the other’s TANK FILLED. The truth is, love languages speak when spouses take the time to listen in order to strengthen their marriages. Here are five ways……
Words Carry Heavy Weight
It is of great importance to some husbands or wives to hear a word that expresses affection or appreciation. When a husband speaks kindly to his wife, or a wife praises her husband who has a desire to hear uplifting words, his or her LOVE TANK gets filled. When the tank is filled love explodes to heights beyond one can imagine. The thing to remember is that love is given to your spouse by you and to you by your spouse and affirming words may not be your primary language of love but it may be for your spouse.
Uninterrupted Time Speaks Volume
There is a huge difference between hearing and listening. Many couples battle with an addiction to gadgets like cellphones or computers. These distractions disrupt the flow of a real, uninterrupted conversation. A spouse whose primary love language is quality time will never thrive well in the marriage if the other spouse tries to hear him or her while chatting with another person by text, or reading the computer. You are really telling your spouse that you are not really interested in what they are saying or not caring to spend time with them. A great marriage calls for you showing love to your spouse even by honoring the time they wish to spend with you without interruption.
All Hands on Deck
You may not care so much for your spouse to rub your face or your back, or any part of your body until time for physical intimacy. But this may be your spouse’s primary concern and desire. A spouse with this desire will not operate at his or her fullest in the relationship if this love language is not met. Love gives. Lust gets. Marriage is about giving your spouse what they desire as long as it is good. Physical touch is a desire for some husbands and wives.
Serve Me Please
I see something different in Michelle when she relaxes in the couch while I make and serve her tea at nights. I actually look forward to this moment because I can hear her LOVE TANK going down and I know it uplifts her when I do this act of service for her. A spouse whose love language is Acts Of Service feels extremely special when being served by the other spouse. Again, the mystery of marriage involves giving to your spouse without a mindset of getting from your spouse. The magic is that your spouse develops the strength to lift you up in return by FILLING your tank also when their’s is filled up.
Stir It Up With a Surprise
Believe it or not, some spouses find it a big deal when they receive a gift from the other spouse even when there is no special occasion, like a birthday or anniversary. As a matter of fact, their love tanks tend to remain filled for a long time as they keep looking at the gift in memory of your kindness toward them. It speaks volume that you get them a gift just out of the ordinary. Receiving gifts to a spouse with this primary love language is like a BIG BIG deal.
Remember that love gives and when both husband and wife decide to intentionally give love to each other both LOVE TANKS REMAIN FILLED. The mindset that leads to great marriages is one that aims to give love. Furthermore, couples who both aim to give love will get love in return. Know your spouse’s primary love language and aim to fill it as much as you can. Imagine both husband and wife with this aim! When both aim to FILL each other’s LOVE TANK the marriage thrives like no other. If Love, Joy, Peace and Harmony is your desire for your marriage relationship, start aiming to fill your spouse’s love tank and enjoy the journey toward a great marriage.

The Ashes 2023: Ben Stokes unable to give England win over Australia at Lord’s
Even by the standards of past Ashes dramas or daring Stokes feats, this was utterly sensational and will last longer in the memory than the eventual outcome of this series.
Whether or not the Bairstow decision was correct, or within the spirit of the game, Australia made the error of awakening Stokes and almost paid the ultimate price.
From England’s 114-4 overnight, Stokes had to overturn being given lbw to Mitchell Starc on 39 in a stand of 132 with Ben Duckett, who played one hook too many and was well caught by Carey off Hazlewood for 83.
The wicket punctured English hope and seemed to put Australia on course for victory, only for the Bairstow controversy to change the course of the final day.
With Broad’s determination to survive matched only by his eagerness to antagonise the Australians, Stokes slipped into a gear not seen since Headingley 2019.
When he belted a return catch through the hands of Pat Cummins, it felt like a personal blow directed at his opposite number.
Time and again he swatted enormous blows over the leg side. The three hits off Green, one of which was dropped over the boundary by Starc, were celebrated by increasingly loud cheers from a Lord’s crowd that had reached fever pitch. The third six gave Stokes his 13th Test ton – he had taken 35 from 10 Green deliveries.
The arguing continued as the players left for lunch, Australia jeered all the way. Usman Khawaja and David Warner confronted spectators in the Long Room.
The break could have derailed England’s momentum, but Stokes imperiously hit Hazlewood’s second ball after the resumption back over his head for six and, in the same over, Steve Smith dropped a sitter at deep square leg, while a diving Carey just missed a glove down the leg side.
When Stokes was on strike, Australia had all nine fielders on the boundary, so he hit the ball into the crowd – twice more off Hazlewood. The fired-up Broad was trusted with one or two deliveries each over, bravely fending off bouncers. Australia, without injured spinner Nathan Lyon, had their minds scrambled into poor plans with the ball and mistakes in the field.
Just as Australia were out of ideas and Stokes was in complete control, an error came out of nowhere. A miscue off Hazlewood looped up for Carey and the excitement and expectation in Lord’s was instantly deflated.
Ollie Robinson was out on the hook to Cummins, Broad in the same way to Hazlewood for 11 from 36 balls.
James Anderson, in what could be his last Lord’s Test, was cheered all the way to the crease and took a sickening blow to the helmet off Starc.
Anderson added 25 for the last wicket with Josh Tongue before Tongue was bowled by Starc and the victorious Australians were again barracked off the field.
Was the Bairstow decision correct?
The Bairstow decision has already become one of the most infamous incidents in Ashes history, a moment that incensed the usually genteel Lord’s crowd. On more than one occasion, there were chants of “cheat, cheat, cheat”.
The laws of the game state: “The ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play.”
Carey clearly did not think the ball was dead – he threw it as soon as he could. Bairstow did believe it to be dead, with the added variable being the end of the over.
The key seems to be standing umpire Ahsan Raza, who was not watching the action and preparing to return a cap to bowler Green as the ball hit the stumps.
Though the decision appears correct by the letter of the law, Australia could have opted to withdraw their appeal.
That they did not almost cost them the match. It may yet have longer ramifications in this series.
England on the brink despite Stokes heroics
This is already an Ashes series for the ages, but the fact remains that England have to come from 2-0 down in order to lift the urn – something they have never done before.
The heroics of the final day came too late at Lord’s. On the previous four they failed to take advantage of bowling on a dank first day and threw away wickets in their first innings with some infuriating batting. England dropped catches and, even at the beginning of Australia’s second innings, had favourable conditions in which to bowl.
Moving forwards, England have problems to solve. There are fitness doubts over Ollie Pope, Mark Wood and Moeen Ali, and there is a need to refresh a pace attack that includes a tired-looking Anderson.
But, what has the final day at Lord’s done to galvanise England and damage an Australia team that previously looked unstoppable?
The teams head to Leeds knowing England will receive fervent support and the Australians a hostile reception.
Headingley is the home of famous Ashes comebacks. England now need to start the most unlikely of them all. (BBC)
