    “I started therapy, and I progressed. I went from using a wheelchair to a walker to walking unaided. I’m a very stubborn person – if I tell myself that I have to do it, I will do it. I really wanted to get better, I wanted to get back to where I was so I pushed myself to that limit.

    “I could remember saying that one of my personal goals was to walk across that stage [after earning his Bachelor’s Degree] unaided because I was using a walking cane,” Shepherd said, noting that he achieved this.

    He said there are many goals that have been set and already he is seeing progress through the help of a rehabilitation team.

    At this time, one of the goals is that by August this year, he would be able to run up to 100 meters in less than a minute. He proudly announced that in May he ran up to 100 meters in 12 seconds and another 100 meters in 28 seconds. He has moved on to another goal which is to play an effective game by December.

    Meanwhile Browne, 36, said she was ashamed of her hearing disability for many years but with the government’s hearing aid programme, her life has changed significantly.  The woman developed the disability after being in a car accident when she was just 5 years old. The woman said as time passed, she started losing hearing in both ears.

    “Over the years I began using my hearing in my right ear. Going to school and college sitting in the classroom trying to listen to the teacher has been a struggle I developed a skill of reading lips to try and understand what was being said,” she explained.

    She was emotional as she said that from time to time when she didn’t hear she’d nod and smile or ask people to repeat themselves. Then in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she could no longer read lips because people wore masks. It was then that she applied for the public assistance programme and she qualified to receive the hearing aid.

    “I’m very grateful that I was successful on the list and I received my hearing aid last year. My life has changed significantly since then I can attend training seminars at my job, I can attend meetings and I can return to school,” Browne said.

    According to the director of the Rehabilitation Services, Ariane Mangar, the Ministry of Health has made significant progress in getting these services to all parts of the country.

    “For the first time we now have at least a physiotherapist in every single region helping to improve and expand the services in the regions in Guyana,” Mangar said.

    Through collaborative efforts with the University of Guyana and other partners, programmes are available for persons to become certified in physiotherapy, speech and language/audiology therapy, and occupational therapy.

    There are now ten occupational therapists, nine speech and language therapists, 51 physiotherapists. Three doctors and a physiatrist also now support the department of Rehabilitation Services.

    Two men wanted for murder of Coast Guard Lieutenant

    Rondel Anthony Douglas.

    Douglas was shot and killed on Wednesday night. He worked as a part-time taxi driver and was robbed of his car by two men, one of whom pretended to be a customer.

    The last known address of Ghanie, 25, is Patterson, Turkeyen, Georgetown. Howard’s last known address is Liliendaal, Georgetown.

    Anyone with information leading to the apprehension of either or both persons is asked to call 911, 225-8196, 226-6978.

    All information will be treated with the strictest confidence, Police Headquarters said in a statement.

    Lieutenant Douglas, 33, who was attached to the Coast Guard, was fatally wounded at Cul-de-Sac Street, North Ruimveldt, after he put up a fierce fight with the two bandits at around 22:30 hrs.

    Police said the owner of the taxi service related that a male went to the base and hired Douglas to transport him to North Ruimveldt.

    CCTV footage obtained by the News Room showed when Douglas arrived at the dead end of the street and then he turned around.

    As he did so, a male was seen emerging from the bushes; he approached the driver’s side of the car during which there was a struggle between Douglas, the man inside the car, and the one who approached the driver’s side.

    Douglas then managed to exit the car and ran behind one of the suspects when he was shot. The suspect who posed as a customer then exited the car; Douglas ran back to the vehicle when he collapsed.

    The two suspects then entered the car and drove away, leaving Douglas bleeding out on the street.

    His body bore two wounds, one to his head and another to his chest.

    Jamaica Now Represented On Board Of World Anti-Doping Agency Foundation

    Jamaica will have a seat on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Foundation Board. The board is the highest decision-making body of WADA. Jamaica was elected at the general assembly of the American Sports Council (CADE), which was held recently in Cartagena, Colombia.

    Election a “Milestone”

    According to Alando Terrelonge, former Minister of State in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport who was recently appointed Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade State Minister, attended the meeting in Colombia and described the development as a “milestone” for the English-speaking Caribbean, which has never before ad representation in the governance structure of WADA. Jamaica now has the confidence of Central American and Caribbean member nations via the Conference of Central American and Caribbean Sport Councils (CONCECADE) and from the continent through CADE,” he added.

    “Remarkable Opportunity”

    According to Terrelonge, the historically significant appointment also gives Jamaica a great opportunity to directly contribute to any review and revision of the WADA Code, Terrelonge said and noted that Jamaica’s election to the board represents a “pivotal” moment in the nation’s sporting skills and leadership in the region. The election also adds to Jamaica’s accomplishments and highlights its increased influence in the arena of regional sports governance. Terrelonge said the appointment also provides Jamaica with a “remarkable opportunity” to make a direct contribution to the review and revision of the WADA Code, adding that it is “a pivotal moment for Jamaica’s sporting prowess and regional leadership”.

    WADA Foundation Board

    The WADA Foundation Board has 42 members and comprises equal numbers of representatives from the Olympic movement and public authorities. Members of the board are appointed by their constituency groups. Jamaica was also named to serve on the executive committee of CONCECADE, one of CADE’s subregional groups. It was elected vice-president for the Caribbean to serve a term from 2023 to 2025.

    Jamaica’s Achievement

    The addition of Jamaica to the government body reflects its commitment to the promotion of clean and fair competition, Terrelonge said, adding that it will also give Jamaica a greater voice in international sports governance. As CONCECADE vice president, Jamaica will encourage more involvement of member nations from the Caribbean in both CONCECADE and CADE activities.

    Marriage And The Mind…..Two Major Effects

    I love to tell Michelle my thoughts and rightfully so.  Michelle is the closest person to me on earth.   She is not only my wife, she is my best friend.  Over twenty two years of marriage we have learned about each other in so many different ways.  When Michelle shares what’s on her mind I can hear her heart speaking loudly and so can she when I share my thoughts.

    OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART THE MOUTH SPEAKS”  Matthew 12:34.  Thoughts enter the mind and travels to the heart and makes an exit through the mouth.  If one or both spouses shut down and choose not to speak their minds, the heart remains unknown and the marriage relationship faces hinderances.  When Beth and Arthur faced the biggest hurdle in their marriage relationship, Beth chose to remain quiet and Arthur thought all was well.  In marriage counseling, Arthur was surprised at the gage of their relationship in Beth’s eyes.  Arthur thought things were better when Beth felt they were far from each other emotionally.

    The mind has more power than we realize at times.  God gave us the gift of thinking but orders us to think positive thoughts and take captive of negative thoughts.  Married couples are not exempt from this command.  God wants us to enjoy whatever he creates and gives us the power to renew our thoughts when negative ones enter our minds.  We cannot stop negative thoughts from visiting our minds but we can make them visitors.  A spouse that entertains negative thoughts brings negative behaviors to the marriage relationship while a spouse majoring on positive thoughts creates an atmosphere of harmony in the marriage relationship.  There are two major effects that the mind has on marriages and it depends on the choice from these two influences…..

    The World’s Mind

    Hollywood is a perfect example of a fairytale marriage.  Men and women get together and decide to tie the knot on a trial basis.  There is no decision to LOVE LIKE CHRIST LOVES or SUBMIT AS UNTO CHRIST.  The mind of worldly husbands and wives are fixed on what they can get out of the marriage relationship, putting self at the top of the list of desires in getting married.  Some agree to get married with a prenuptial agreement as the guide for there relationships.  These marriages do not have  a solid marital foundation in Christ and tend to crumble at the drop of a dime.

    Husbands and wives with a worldly mindset are deceived into thinking that marriage is just another thing to do, not understanding the truth that marriage was created by God to reflect Christ.  A marriage in God’s image is far from their minds and these marriages tend to get knocked out by a tiny blow.  Money, fame, and the like drive these marriages leaving little to know room for REAL LOVE.  The deception is that love gets, not gives.  But real love gives, not get.  When both husband and wife have a mind of giving love and respect to each other they both end up geting love and respect from each other.  This is what drives a great marriage.

    The Mind Of Christ

    Jesus Christ is the son of the creator of marriage.  A husband or wife with a mind that follows the ways of Christ experience a marriage relationship like no other.  They have the mindset that they are getting married for life and set the boundaries in place to make it happen.  These marriages are no fairytale.  There is no trial and error thinking when joined in Holy matrimony.  The minds of such husband and wife leads them to desiring to give love and respect to each other and in turn receive that love and respect from each other.

    REAL LOVE is shown because they refuse to put self first by putting each other first in the relationship.  Their mindset is that God created marriage to reflect Christ so they do what God says in the marriage to make that happen.  It is in the decision to reflect Christlike behaviors toward each other that drives the engine of a marriage with LOVE, JOY, PEACE and HARMONY.  A marriage that never fails is led by husbands and wives thinking like Christ thinks.  These husbands and wives understand the truth of LOVING LIKE CHRIST LOVES THE CHURCH and SUBMITTING AS UNTO CHRIST to have a marriage made in Heaven.

    Michelle and I continue to pray for every married couple to see the truth that only a life surrendered to Christ by accepting Him as Lord and Savior of your life and ultimately of your marriage will lead to a great marriage that last a lifetime.  Our encouragement is that every husband and wife will choose to think like Christ as they travel along their marriage journey to having a great and well deserved beautiful marriage relationship.  Choose to renew your minds to refuse to entertain worldly, negative thoughts and replace it with entertaining Christlike thoughts.  “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” Philippians 4:8.
