New Amsterdam woman who fed husband poison charged with murder

A 42-year-old woman of Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was remanded to prison Monday after being charged with murder.

Leila Bacchus appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Renita Singh where the charge was read to her, alleging that she murdered 43-year-old Andy Junor called ‘Bull’, a Carpenter who she shared a relationship and living space with.

She was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison until July 14 2023

Bacchus had reported to the police that the man consumed poison on May 16 and died at the New Amsterdam Hospital on May 20 2023.

Bacchus and Junor shared a common law relationship for the past 12 years and have three children.

The Police said Bacchus was unfaithful and on one occasion Junor caught her in the act.

That relationship ended and Bacchus struck up another relationship with someone from another country while living with Junor.

Bacchus told police that she contemplated for about “three to four days” giving her reputed husband poison. She said she knew that the deceased was in the habit of consuming Turbo energy drinks and so contaminated the drink with poison.

The man consumed the contaminated energy drink unknowingly and immediately began vomiting. She told police she called on her sister-in-law Donette Junor that also lives in the same house and told her that her brother drank poison.

He was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he died four days later.

From Jamaica To OuterSpace, Jamaican American Astronaut Explains The Journey

When Virgin Galactic astronaut and mission specialist Christopher Huie took his first space flight on Unity 25 on May 25, 2023, he wore Jamaican and United States flag patches to reflect his conviction that the trip represents the completion of a journey that had its beginnings on the Caribbean island of Jamaica.

From Jamaica to the United States

The son of Jamaican immigrants, Huie’s personal origin story begins when his mother moved from Harvey River in the parish of Hanover to Chicago at the age of 17 to live with her aunt and pursue better life opportunities. She then went to Florida where Huie grew up. Huie’s mother flew to New Mexico to watch her son take his first space flight from Spaceport.

    Growing Up

Huie earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland and worked in the industry prior to joining Virgin Galactic in 2016 to serve as a loads and simulation engineer. He became the world’s 19th Black astronaut, but as a child, he never imagined he would have a chance to travel into space. He did admit to playing with Legos and building spaceships and flying machines and that he did want to become an astronaut for a while before deciding he wanted to be a pilot before ultimately becoming a space engineer. He thought there was a “one in ten million chance” of becoming an astronaut.

    A Story Of Sacrifice

Speaking to Metro.co.uk from the Gateway to Space Center of Virgin Galactic, Huie paid tribute to his mother before traveling beyond the Earth’s atmosphere for the first time. His  story is likely familiar to many Jamaicans in the United Kingdom, which is marking the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Windrush from the Caribbean. His parents divorced when he was very young, but his mother was determined to give him a better life and spent her working life employed by hospitals until she retired to ensure he had access to opportunities she never had. According to Huie, his mother “sacrificed a lot” so that he could take advantage of opportunities as they presented themselves, and this is why he views his space flight as the culmination of their journey.

Desire To Blaze Pathways For Others

Huie said the space flight is not just for Jamaica, but also for immigrants everywhere who are looking for opportunities to do the best they can in the life they’ve been given. Living with his wife and daughter in Los Angeles, Huie wants to show others with backgrounds similar to his own how to succeed in their lives. He said he wants to be a role model for people who look like him and help them understand how they can break down barriers to what they want to achieve via determination and focus. A co-founder of the Black Leaders in Aerospace Scholarship and Training (BLAST) program, which mentors college students, Huie says one of his life goals is to change the world in whatever way he can. He advises others to watch what he does next while acknowledging little could match going into space.

    Unity 25

Huie’s Unity 25 fellow crew members included Beth Moses, Luke Mays and Jamila Gilbert. While he has a detailed knowledge of the VSS Unity and VMS Eve craft as he had worked on virtually every part of the spaceship and mothership, he took a more passive role in the recent mission. The launch was designed to make a final assessment of the flight and astronaut experience prior to taking paying customers on 90-minute flights in the near future. The cost of the flight reservations totals US$450,000.

  • Fifteen Reasons Love Is NOT Automatic

Fifteen Reasons Love Is NOT Automatic

This word LOVE has to be the most spoken of all in marriage relationships.  It sounds so pretty.  When it is said it touches the heart and if not careful causes it to melt like butter.  Many say it with great ease because it has become the word that holds the world record as being the most beautiful sounding.  “I LOVE YOU” carries so much weight when it comes out of the mouth.

Tom had a fight with Ruth on their anniversary night and “I LOVE YOU” ended the fight quickly.  Little did Ruth know that Tom said it only to make up.  Ruth felt her emotions swing from bad to good for that moment but went home and started thinking about the words and started questioning in her mind, “what is love really?” Ruth had all right to question it and so do many husbands and wives.  Michelle and I quickly learned the reality of the phrase, “MOUTH CAN SAY ANYTHING.”

“LET US NOT LOVE WITH WORDS OR SPEECH BUT WITH ACTION AND IN TRUTH” 1 John 3:18.  The creator of marriage tells us this truth because he knows that mouth can say anything and your spouse may believe it even when it is not shown.  The reality is that Love is NOT Automatic and it can be proven.  Here are fifteen solid reasons…..

    Patience Needs Help

Love is patient.  You will never be patient without SHOWING patience.  Saying you are patient cannot be seen unless you actually are patient with your spouse.

    Kindness Has To Be Displayed

Your marriage will not last without you showing kindness to your spouse.  Kindness does not happen unless you CHOOSE to be king to your spouse.

    Envy Comes Naturally

Love does NOT envy.  It’s easy to envy your spouse but intentional to be happy for your spouse’s accomplishments.

    Show-Off Brings Disgrace

Bragging rights has no place in marriage relationships.  You are a team that breaks down when one spouse boasts to downplay the other, bringing disgrace to the marriage relationship.  Be intentional to REMAIN humble.

    Pride Comes Before Destruction

If you want to destroy your marriage, pride is the way to go and it is not a hard accomplishment.  If you wish to save your marriage you must be PURPOSEFUL to drop the pride and say you are sorry to your spouse at times and mean it from your heart.  Love is not proud.

    Dishonor Is a Dagger

A loving spouse REFUSES to dishonor the other spouse with harsh or degrading words.  The challenge is to be slow to speak and quick to listen and this is not an automatic accomplishment.  It takes intentionality to shut up and listen more.  Learn and master this move and watch your communication excel.

    Self Must Die

It’s a tendency to think SELF but marriage is not about you as much as it is about your spouse.  Love is not self-seeking and does not happen automatically.  When both husband and wife train their minds to focus on each other and not self both love tanks get filled.

    Anger Is A Quick One

Love is NOT easily angered.  Anger must be trained to become joyful.  Joy is chosen and shown while anger spills out with no help whatsoever.  A joyful spouse is the catalyst to a joyful marriage relationship.

    The Record Keeping Spouse

Pain and hurt are long-lasting but does not have to be dictating.  It is normal to keep track of the pain and hurt that takes away the peace and joy in your marriage but it beneficial to decide to forgive despite the pain and hurt considering you may have inflicted pain and hurt also.  Forgiveness is key to a great marriage but has to be DONE not just said.

    Evil Exchanged For Truth

Love hates evil but delights in truth.  The sad truth is that there is a natural intention of every heart to do evil but when both husband and wife commit to the DECISION to love what is good and hate evil, the marriage relationship thrives.  Decide to do good and love it.

    Back To Back Is Necessary

Love always protects.  BEING your spouse’s protector is a marriage job.  It is critical piece of the mystery of marriage and takes intentional work to always protect your spouse’s privacy, heart, mind and soul.

    No Fear In Love

Love always trust…..the creator of marriage that is!  Believing in God is good but believing God for your marriage to be better is like a marriage made in Heaven.  Perfect love casts out fear of a failing marriage.  Love is perfect when you trust God while DOING your part in the marriage and not worry about the other spouse’s role.  God will take care of your spouse.

    Hopeful Always

Love ALWAYS hopes.  It is not easy to keep hope alive when things seem dim in your relationship.  But it is a choice you will have to MAKE for the sake of your marriage journey.  Never settle in thoughts that your marriage cannot be better because it can always be better.

    Perseverance Is Earned

The decision to exercise the STAYING POWER is the conduit to STAYING MARRIED BECOMING ONE FLESH.  No marriage is perfect but all marriages can grow into beauty.

    Unfailing Love

True winners FIGHT together as a team and never give up until victory is accomplished.  It starts with knowing you are not THE ONE but you BECOME THE ONE along the marriage journey knowing that true love never fails.

It is never too late to start showing love.  Your actions speak loudly to your spouse.  Let your spouse know you love them by acting on those fifteen truths above and watch your marriage drastically change for the better.  When both spouses decide to show love nothing can come between the glue that holds them together.  Michelle and I continue to pray for and encourage each couple along their marriage journey to becoming ONE FLESH.

  • Smallie’s accomplice snatched gun from Police after he was caught

Smallie’s accomplice snatched gun from Police after he was caught

shot dead by Police Officers on Sunday when he snatched a firearm from ranks and attempted to shoot them after they caught him.

This is according to a detailed press release from Police Headquarters on Sunday night which stated that Howard was shot at St. Mary’s Quarry, Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni).

Howard was wanted for aiding the recent escape of Williams, according to the Police.

A manhunt to recapture Williams and two of his accomplices (Howard and another unnamed suspect) was launched after the escape earlier this month.

According to the Police, based on information received of sightings of Williams and the duo in the St Mary’s quarry area on Saturday, it was noted that ranks from the Joint Services responded and sent out several ATV and foot patrols in an attempt to apprehend the men.

At about 06:54 hrs Sunday, one of the patrols identified Howard at a lumber concession near the Essequibo river bank. He was then arrested and was being transported through an interior trail via an ATV.

But Howard reportedly snatched a firearm that was resting on an officer’s lap, jumped off the vehicle and attempted to fire at the ranks.

“As a result, one of the Joint Services ranks, who was armed with an AK 47 rifle, then discharged four rounds in Howard’s direction, one of which struck Howard, who fell in a ditch of water whilst still attempting to crank the firearm.

“On seeing that, another Joint Services rank then discharged three rounds from his 9mm weapon, of which two struck (Howard) and he soon became motionless,” Police Headquarters reported.

Howard was later taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

When he was arrested, Howard was found with a black Samsung phone, one grey haversack which contained a pair of black Nike boots; Vitamin C tablets, Iron tablets, Malaria tablets; one camouflage hammock; one pack of cook-up seasoning, and one checkered boxer.

The Police noted that items similar to these, including rations, were previously discovered by ranks of the Joint Services who were in hot pursuit of the suspects.

Meanwhile, the Police further noted that an eyewitness who had interactions under duress with Williams and his accomplices has positively identified Howard as one of those accomplices.

Williams called ‘Smallie’, in a daring daylight ordeal and assisted by men with high-powered weapons, escaped from the Mazaruni Prison on May 19. This is the country’s maximum security penitentiary.

A day later, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) announced a $10 million reward for any information that can lead to Williams’ arrest.

The convicted mass murderer escaped while being escorted back from a visit with the aid of heavily armed accomplices in a speedboat. The escort party was fired upon with AK-47 automatic rifles by men inside the boat alongside the Mazaruni River.

The boat and its occupants, including Williams, proceeded upstream, past Itaballi landing, while Prison guards and Police in support undertook pursuit.

Williams was convicted of murders stemming from the Bartica massacre in 2008, when he, along with other gunmen, ambushed and killed twelve (12) persons, including three (3) policemen. Additionally, he had been sentenced to death in September last year over the killing on January 23rd, 2008, of Guyana Defence Force member Corporal Ivor Williams.

Royden Williams had previously escaped from the Camp Street Prison on July 09, 2017, but was recaptured on October 10, 2017, on the Weldaad Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
