Un juriste plaide pour le démantèlement des gangs
Ils sont de plus en plus nombreux à réclamer des dispositions drastiques pour rétablir un climat de paix dans le pays. Professeur de droit à l’université de Louisiane aux États Unis, M. Nicolas Estiverne recommande un programme de nettoyage pour démanteler les gangs qui imposent la terreur en Haïti.
Les forces de l’ordre doivent être autorisées à stopper les bandits armés. Take no prisoners, dit il faisant valoir que cette campagne doit être réalisée par la Police et l’armée.
Il insiste sur la nécessité de ne pas sous estimer les gangs. Il révèle que des membres de l’impitoyable gang MS 13 sont présents en Haïti. Ces criminels dangereux, sont présents dans tous les centres de détention aux États Unis.
Ces criminels ont été déportés et sont en grand nombre dans les gangs haïtiens.
De l’avis de cet ancien candidat à la présidence, ce programme permettra une solution républicaine à la crise sécuritaire.
Il se dit préoccupé par l’opération Bois Calé qui voit la population prendre la loi en main.
Il redoute des dérives pouvant conduire à l’anarchie.
M. Estiverne insiste sur la nécessité pour que les forces de l’ordre soient chargées de rétablir la sécurité. Il se dit confiant que les institutions haitiennes peuvent s’acquitter efficacement de leur tâche.
C’est uniquement en cas d’échec qu’il envisagerait une force étrangère pour résoudre la crise.

Le juge Jean Wilner Morin ne désarme pas. Ce lundi 22 mai 2023 le magistrat avait prévu d’auditionner le ministre des affaires sociales, M. Jean Ricot Odné dans le cadre d’une investigation sur des cas de corruption à la caisse d’assistance sociale.
En poursuivant ses auditions le juge prouve ainsi qu’il entend pas lâcher prise.
Réputé pour son intégrité, le magistrat refuse de capituler devant ceux qui veulent le réduire au silence. Après l’attentat de la semaine écoulée le juge instructeur planche à nouveau sur des dossiers sensibles.
Le magistrat avait eu la vie sauve miraculeusement.
Moins de 24 heures avant l’attaque il avait reçu un véhicule blindé du Conseil Supérieur de la Police Nationale. Plus de 13 projectiles avaient touché son véhicule.
Dans le cadre de l’enquête sur les cas de corruption au CAS, le juge Morin a déjà écroué la directrice et le comptable en chef de cette institution chargée de venir en aide aux vulnérables.
Considéré comme un juge anti terroriste et anti corruption, le juge Morin devait le jour de l’attentat auditionner le Maire de Pétion ville dans le cadre d’une affaire de corruption. De plus il est chargé de l’instruction de l’affaire du chef de gang de Bolosse, Ezekiel.
Également journaliste et pasteur, le juge Morin s’était le mois dernier illustré en refusant de siéger avec le chef du Parquet, Jacques Lafontant, non certifié par le CSPJ.

La majorité des dirigeants de partis politiques sont opposés au déploiement d’une force multinationale, a laissé entendre le diplomate rappelant qu’un consensus est un préalable au déploiement d’une force internationale. .
L’Ukraine a subi une agression étrangère mais Haïti doit résoudre un problème de sécurité intérieure.

New York Senator Charles Schumer, the United States Senate Majority Leader, announced that Jamaican American Orelia Merchant has been confirmed and will serve as a judge on the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY).
Daughter of a First-Generation Jamaican American
Senator Schumer had forwarded the name of Merchant, who was born in the Bronx and currently lives in Brooklyn, to the Biden Administration to serve as a federal district judge, championing the nomination of a woman whose father is a first-generation Jamaican American.
Confirmed by US Senate With a 51-48 Vote
As a representative of one of the most diverse groups of judicial selections by the Biden Administration, Merchant was confirmed by a 51-48 vote in the Senate, with Senator Lindsey Graham, the leading Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, being the only member of the Republicans in the Senate to cast his vote for her confirmation.

In an interview with the Caribbean Media Corporation, Merchant noted that Merchant brings her extensive leadership and judicial experience to her role. Serving as Chief Deputy Attorney General in New York, she manages 8,000 active cases and 450 employees, including 250 attorneys, in various prosecutions and defense actions and in complex state and federal court cases. Schumer said Merchant brings her integrity and professionalism with her to work every day and that he was proud to have championed her nomination to the federal bench. He described her as a “brilliant legal mind” that will ensure the EDNY bench is more reflective of the diversity of the population it serves.

Orelia Merchant graduated from Dillard, the historically Black university in Louisiana, earning a BS degree in physics and mathematics. She also earned a master’s degree in marine science from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, and her law degree from Tulane University Law School in New Orleans.

In stating his confidence that Merchant would bring her legal talents and commitment to the public good to the federal court, Schumer cited her dedication to serving her community and ensuring that the law is applied equally to everyone. Her experience includes serving in the EDNY office and as assistant regional counsel for the US Environmental Protection Agency, Region 5, Chicago. She was also a special assistant US attorney in the Eastern District of Louisiana in its civil and criminal divisions.

Mocha Fest music and activities center on hip-hop and Caribbean music culture, and experiences include beach parties, themed club parties, beach concerns, tropical excursions, pool games, and food. Party themes include retro, bikini brunch, and black out, which will feature 2 Chainz. Offsite parties will be held at Wavz Beach Negril, Margaritaville, and Woodstock Negril. Featured artists include Laa Lee, Mario, and Stefflon Don. Reggae Sumfest, Montego Bay, Jamaica

The 2023 staging of Reggae Sumfest marks the festival’s 30th year in operation. Owned and produced by Downsound Entertainment Limited and headed by Joseph Bogdanovich and his international team, it is the largest and most prestigious music festival in the Caribbean. As expected from a celebration of reggae, the festival promises unlimited good times with ganja, dancing, and abundant beverages, combined with Rastafarian unity and political awareness in two chief venues: the beach and the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex. The week-long festival begins with Sumfest Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 16, followed by the Free Street Dance on the 17th, the All White Party on the 18th, the Blitz Party on the 19th, and the Global Sound Clash on the 20th.
The two main festival nights are scheduled for Friday, July 21, and Saturday, July 22. Guests should be prepared to party all night as Sumfest crowds tend to continue their activities until sunrise. Jamaica Independence Festival Celebrations, Kingston, Jamaica

Scheduled for staging at the Jamaica National Independence Village, National Stadium, Independence Park in Kingston, the seven-day celebration is presented by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission. The 2023 staging marks Jamaica’s 61st anniversary of independence, and the multi-day celebration will include numerous events displaying Jamaica’s many and varied creative talents. Events will feature award ceremonies, fireworks, barbeques, a float parade, and a Grand Gala designed to revitalize and promote independence celebrations. August 6 is a public holiday marking the date of Jamaica’s independence from Great Britain in 1962. Other scheduled activities are the Mello-Go-Roun’, Festival Queen Contest, August Mawnin’, the Festival Song Contest, and street dances held in the major towns throughout the island, and traditional Jamaican foods like curry goat, rice and peas, jerk chicken, and Jamaican beef patties will be available.

Black Star Line Festival, Kingston, Jamaica

No date has yet been set for a Kingston staging of the Black Star Line Festival, which had its initial presentation in Accra, Ghana, on January 6, 2023. Designed as a festival celebrating Pan-African art, it was founded by Vic Mensa, a Ghanaian American artist, and Black American artist, Chance the Rapper. IT offered a week-long showcase of events that included panel discussions, fine art exhibitions, and nightlife. The week’s offerings climaxed in a large-scale concert at Black Star Square in Accra. The festival is meant to signal the total liberation of all African peoples around the world. The founders seek to align all people of African descent to reunify bonds severed by the transatlantic slave trade. The festival is named for Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line shipping company that sought to close the division of the people by water. Chance the Rapper has been in discussions with Jamaican representatives to stage a Black Star Line Festival in Kingston in the near future.

horrific fire at the Mahdia Secondary School female dormitory, Region Eight.
With these three girls, a total of nine girls were airlifted to Georgetown for medical attention.
Dr. Shilindra Rajkumar, a surgeon at the Georgetown Hospital, was one of the two doctors who went to Mahdia to provide support. He returned Monday afternoon with the last set of patients who needed critical care and updated reporters on the condition of those three patients.
According to him, one of the three girls was grappling with a preexisting condition and the amount of smoke she inhaled exacerbated her condition.
The second girl had serious facial burns and was wheezing. The third also experienced some difficulty breathing, owing to the amount of smoke she inhaled.
“There is also an element of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
“These kids are in a state of shock right now. It has been a very challenging night and day for them and we were not comfortable leaving them alone,” Dr. Rajkumar said.
In addition to these three patients, six others came earlier in the day and were receiving critical care. One of the nine patients brought to Georgetown was a 12-year-old girl who needed a limb-saving surgery because of the extent of her injuries. That surgery went successfully but the girl remains under close observation as a burns patient.
Three other girls are receiving treatment in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU while another two are in the paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU). Of those hospitalised, three are aged 14; one is 12, and another is 13. The age of the last child is unknown.
Meanwhile, a mental health team comprising stakeholders from various government ministries and agencies has been mobilised to provide support to students, parents and other persons affected by the tragic fire.
Authorities have confirmed that 18 girls and one boy died in the fire. The girls were students while the boy, 5, was the son of the caretakers of the dormitory. Investigators also found that the fire was maliciously set by another student.

In the said update, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Dwayne Scotland said the point of origin of the fire was the south west end of the building.
The scene has been handed over to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) as the investigation continues.
Hicken assured that the investigation will be concluded “swiftly” after which, he said a press release will follow.

A total of 29 girls were rushed to the Mahdia Hospital. Nine of the girls were airlifted to Georgetown for treatment; they are nursing serious burn injuries.
The News Room understands that firefighters experienced a number of challenges including severe weather conditions in the region before they managed to control the blaze.
An estimated 56 children were housed in the dormitory.
The school houses girls from Mahdia, Campbelltown, Micobie, El Paso and several other villages in the North Pakaraimas in Region 8.
